Who decided that the space between genders had to have the complete freak/loser aesthetic? I worry that people might just confuse them for attention seekers.

Seeing northern Irish people waving union jacks is embarrassing. What you playing at. If they knew how rarely anyone thinks of them when you hear the term 'British'. Who are they kidding? Nobody over here regards you as British mate

    I mean, I do...

I don't really care about the concept of being British (although they're part of the UK, Not Britain, right?) So it's not something I sit thinking about, but if I do think "Britain" I think Norn Iron a long time before I think of Guernsey or the Isle of Man.

I've always been slightly triggered by 'British' referring to being from the UK, rather than Britain.
    UKish, surely?

In the same vein Brexit should be UKexit.

'British' is a much more pleasing word, regardless of its accuracy, as you've just demonstrated. 'UK' sounds crap to my ear, I associate it with mid-atlantic accents at the UN.

Well those aren't technically part of the UK so that's just "being correct."

We (the island/crown dependency folk) are 'British' though, by nationality (according to the passport at least). The British Isles (may include full Ireland) is the whole shaboodle versus Great Britain, the main island landmass only (hence Great Britain and Northern Ireland), isn't it? In short, it's confusing.

Great Britain is an island. Britain is a nation. The UK is a state.

The confusion comes from the misguided idea that one can only be part of one nation, because in a lot of the world there is no such doubling up. I consider myself both English and British. Some people in Eng/Sco/Wal/NI would reject Britishness, whereas others would feel British but not English/Scots etc (I suspect many ethnic minorities with colonial heritage might feel this way).

Presumably many in the crown dependencies consider themselves British but are evidently not English, Scottish or Welsh.

Northern Ireland obviously adds in a further layer of complexity with Ireland being introduced as a third nation you could be part of. I'm sure there are people who consider themselves British and Irish (and Northern Irish), and I don't see what the problem with that would be.

I think also in these days of hard categorisation, nobody understands the difference between a nation and a state. The Irish nation and the Irish state are two very different things.

This post was brought to you by the first year of my BA in politics.

I personally think multiple identities is a good thing, where possible, as it gives you more perspectives on the world. Most of the violence that goes on is people who only have one rigid identity trying to tell other people that they have to be like them, too.

Many nowadays seem unable to divorce nation/region from state, which is where some of the more fervent FBPE type people come a cropper, as they can't imagine being European without also being subject to its embodiment in the EU political organisation. Similarly, Little Englander mentality is idiots trying to tell people that they aren't allowed to feel European as well as British/English, which of course they very well are.

I disagree with much of that. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a nation state, the constituent parts of which are Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is a nation state, the nations of which are England and Scotland. England is a nation comprising England and Wales, which, in spite of fictions contained in various local government acts, has not been a nation state for centuries (and realistically never was). Northern Ireland is a complicating factor because, whilst Ireland was a nation within the then nation state, and now have their own nation state, our people over there did not constitute a nation but do now due to a century of quasi-solidarity.

Nations are primarily based in ethnicity, which is why governments stress Britishness, why the SNP very deliberately refer to their broader grievance constituency as 'the people of Scotland', and why Northern Ireland.

I am English and British. I am English because that is my nationality, rooted as it is in my English ethnicity, and British because I am a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This is why ethnic minorities identify with 'Britishness'. You cannot be English-Indian, only British-Indian, because India - or whatever sub-section of it - is their nation. If I had kids with a saucy doctor with a big nose called Priya, they would be British owing to them falling between two stools and landing on their passport. Maybe if she died in childbirth and, in my distress, I swore them off curry for life, their English identity would be strong enough to pull them into our orbit; but I don't know.

I near had a lad I worked with escorted from Belfast City airport one time when I asked him was his Irish passport fake because it had Craigavon as place of birth. I knew it would wind him but completely going off on one was a pleasant surprise.

Don't virtually all of Australia's exports to Europe (wine? RM Williams Hats?) come to the UK? I'm sure there was some stat about how the common tariff was collected and most of it was collected by the UK, particularly with regards to antipodean goods.

Apparently gold is the big one (well, it was in 2016) and 98.8% of that comes to the UK, and 50.1% of all Australian exports [to the EU] in that year were to the UK.

Coal, well, yeah, you can see how that might be subject to 'carbon taxes'.

Meanwhile the UK only accounted for 14% of EU exports to Australia and the balance of trade is in Australia's favour.

Like most things I dont know much about the ins and outs of it I just find it amusing because the boomers are in a trade war with China now add Europe with a carbon tax. The normal agro they walk around with plus this is proper lol.

Over the years, scientists have tried to calculate how many hippos are living in Colombia's waterways, with estimates ranging from 80 to 120 animals. "It is the biggest hippo herd outside Africa, which is their native region," veterinarian and conservationist Carlos Valderrama told the BBC.
Disappointed to learn it wasn't the same one.

More bad and unnecessary science here.

But such procedures are far from simple - or cheap - and Carlos Valderrama has experience of this. In 2009, he performed a castration of a male "cocaine hippo" as part of an experiment to study options to control the growing population.
Man with castration fetish gets to carry out procedure in the name of science.

I was thinking more along the lines of I hope the BBC have understood the repercussions for revealing that to the world (and her Dad) and this nugget:

Ex-UN rights envoy Mary Robinson, who had described Latifa as a "troubled young woman" after meeting her in 2018, now says she was "horribly tricked" by the princess's family.
Are all of these supernational bodies just habitually useless these days?
