The line should probably be drawn at sexual gratification, which I imagine it already is. That's why it's not illegal to have a picture of your baby enjoying a bath, but it's illegal to send it some guy on the Internet.

The CCP rightly takes a lot of flack but even authoritarian lunatics get it right sometimes.

If they carry on duping the public like this they're going to cause themselves a serious problem, if they haven't already. They really need to decouple virtue from the imagined fortunes of 'communities'.

He'd have a grifter claiming he was a good church going boy that is facing brutality from the prison guards within the hour.

This is where it breaks down if you want a non-arbitrary [aka "fair"] system.

Should that Letby woman, for example, be launched into space? I feel people would be less comfortable with that than, say, melting the dad of that Sara girl who was recently battered to death, even though on the balance sheet of evil maybe her crimes are worse?

I oppose the death penalty purely because I don't trust those in power with the power to kill citizens. They have proven that they will cheat, lie and steal to achieve what they want, I have no doubt they'd be very happy to add kill to that list.

Counter Terrorism Police have not declared the matter a terrorist incident.
What was it, then? Research for a book?

I think you could safely neck people where there is absolutely zero chance it wasn't them, i.e. this lad who killed those kids, that Muslim bloke who stabbed his ex to death in the street, or that copper who killed that woman. The mere ninety-nine per centers like Lucy Letby would likely not meet the threshold.

They have already and it's a serious problem that will ultimately end up ushering in the far right, as it has/is all over Europe.

Oh and the death penalty is barbaric and a civilised country simply shouldn't be doing it, even before you get to the 99%/100% issue. It's also a fairly useless deterrent.

It's a completely non-existent deterrent. Its purpose is rubbing out murdering filth after the fact.

It might not be a deterrent but if someone gets caught interfering with children are we really supposed to waste time and money 'helping' them then crossing our fingers they wont do it again?

On average, the wait for execution in America is over a decade. You don't cut incarceration out of the process.

Helping them or not isn’t the issue, there just shouldn’t be state sponsored killings of citizens. It’s eye for an eye shit that should be left in medieval times.

The deterrent effect is much stronger if you impose capital punishment for trivial offences.

Apologies for interrupting the whole death penalty stuff... some news from Vietnam.

It looks more likely that the Gov is going to waste money and build a north-south high speed rail from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City.
    - Current train takes 30hrs (or 2hr flight, 40 per day) and is dirt cheap. New train would still be 5.5hrs
    - 1700km
    - Estimated cost back in 2006 was $33m USD, 2010 cost of $55m finalized and rejected
    - 2024 Vietnam turned to China, but then decided to fund the new line entirely by themselves, at an estimated cost of $67bn (16.5% of GDP)
    - Project to start in 2026 and complete in 2035 (it won't).

Firstly, we don't need it - flying is relatively quick, easy and cheap - and a 5.5hr train journey just won't sell enough high value tickets to make any money outside of lunar new year.
Secondly, the money would be much better spent building an actual metro in both cities. In my city of Ho Chi Minh City, we have 11m people and our FIRST metro line was due to complete in 2014... it's opening later this year, 10 years late and only one line so far. Traffic is fucked in this city nowadays.

I'm not sure how this passed me by until now and I'm even more not sure why Right Said Fred appears to be a news outlet now, but the flooding in Valencia looks absolutely mental.

British water seems more interested in taking its (female) victims one at a time as opposed to showing off with a sporadic massive flood.

Being stuck in a car that's slowly filling with water, unable to open the doors or windows must be a top 10 worst way to die.
