    Do you play the lottery?

I think I might start. If nothing else it provides a great deal of hope and distraction for only £4 a week.

Used to always do the Saturday draw but I had to stop as I would never get a mortgage if I kept playing.

How does anyone have a mortgage in Ireland then?

I've gone through periods of doing a few quid a week but there's no real buzz.

I do it occasionally. Normally put a tenner or so in per month.

It's a waste of money, but there's nothing like waking up to the "You've won a prize!" email on a Wednesday morning and having a beautiful daydream about sacking off work for the rest of your days

(before you open it an find out you've won £3.72)

I presume that you should pay with cash, rather than setting up bank transfers to online gambling companies, which is probably a really bad idea anyway.

I play very rarely, and when I do I actually feel pissed off at not having won.

They do indeed. Banks were handing out 115% mortgages with no deposit like confetti in the mid 2000's.

I've still got that little java script saved, the one Taz posted, that allows you to edit and save any website, so you can doctor bank statements if you wish.

I remember when I was at uni, I'd done some of that matched betting thing to make some money at one point. A while later I went to the bank to ask them to increase my student overdraft and they wouldn't do it because I'd had transfers to online gambling sites on my account.

Ever since I've put the money into my paypal account and then transfer it from there to the bookie. Bastards.

Even though you obviously know there is that one, tiny, idiot / optimist part of your brain sees the subject of the email and thinks "Yeah but WHAT IF-"

Because it's not worth getting out of bed for £5 million?

Anyway, I can't remember the last time I played it. I probably play once or twice a year.

Not really (as I'm not supposed to) but I am partial to the odd ticket when visiting. Of course it's a massive waste of money.

Just have to figure out which one of you to trust to claim my winnings when I inevitably win a fortune.

Didn't we have a pact on the old site as to some sort of TTH share should anyone ever actually win a lottery jackpot? 5%? It was in that NUFC fan thread.

I don't play the regular lottery. I put a £1 coupon on a week with 7500/1 odds, cos it's much more likely to win and it's fun tracking the games to see if both teams score.

I do play the postcode lottery though. Just because I'd be SEETHING if I got wind of my street winning and one of the old retired neighbours winning hundreds of thousands, and I could've had a share of it just by paying £10 a month or whatever it is.
    I'm a twit

I've pondered doing Postcode Lottery before.

    Prizes
    • There are prizes every single day of the month — see what you could win.
    • Every Saturday and Sunday, players in a winning postcode each win £30,000.
    • Every month, players in one postcode sector win a share of an incredible £3 Million.

    Tickets
    • Your ticket is based on your postcode.
    • Only playing postcodes are entered into the draws.
    • If your postcode gets lucky, every player in your postcode wins.

    Payment
    • Subscriptions cost £10 per month. You can pay by Direct Debit, Debit Card, or PayPal.
    • You don't have to remember to buy your ticket each week — just sit back and wait for a win!
    • No need to claim your winnings — they'll be paid directly back into your bank account.

    Good Causes
    • A minimum of 31% goes to charity.
    • Players have raised over £221 Million for good causes so far.
    • Find out how to apply for funding for a charity near you on the About Us page.
I don't really know how the odds of that would work. I guess the odds of winning something are better.

I often buy these pre-picked 6 digit lottery tickets over here, and today I came just 1 digit away from winning 50,000,000 and 2 digits from winning 2,000,000,000.

I started a few weeks back. Euromillioms twice a week and regular draw twice a week. Direct Debit.

So far, after 9 draws total, I have had one number.

    Absolutely pissing money away lads.

Still going with the £20+ a month for a Euromillions ticket on Tues and Fri of every week. Has been going for years with 1 notable win of £100 and around 5 "You've won" emails across the year amounting to fuck all. I only have eyes set on the raffle which is why I like to discourage everyone I encounter from playing. Just give me the fucking win already, man.

My mrs did a mini syndicate at work and they reckoned they did better on the Thunderball.

I play the normal draw and euro draw, one ticket, via the app. Purely so every morning after a draw I can wake up and there's a chance I'm rich (until I check my emails anyway).

Edit: oh I also play a local charity one and the Postcode Lottery, the latter a right fucker because you just know if you stop your ticket the post code will win. I did win £1000 on that last year though

My stepdad's daughter won the lottery years upon years back. Was about 2 and a half million.

They then proceeded to absolutely arseblast it up the wall to the point they're now in debt due to the lifestyle they got used to and are absolutely fucked.

This happens the majority of the time, apparently. Very few people stay rich. Usually they spend it on a nice house, fast cars and top holidays, then end up in the shit because they can't afford their new Council Tax and Car Insurance payments.

I'd be very surprised if 100% of those Omaze winners didn't sell up sharpish, purely because of the Council Tax.

These people always miss the part that the true advantage of being rich isn't the things you can buy, but the fact that you don't have to worry about money anymore. I reckon if I won a million I would more or less just sit on it.

Yeah, the pro move is to just invest it and live off the dividends.

I would do something boring with it. A Dividend ETF to draw from and a couple of flats to live off the poor scums rent. Tidy.

Am I missing something with council tax or is it not possible to pay more than about £5k a year regardless of whatever monstrosity you can purchase, be it the entirety of The Shard or some country mansion covering half the county? Hardly going to ruin someone.

I don't want to hear any cunt talk to me about what they'd do with their winnings when bank interest on £1m would pay you about double the median UK salary.

Yeah they spent like 300k on cars for her, hubby and kid who had just turned 18. About 600k on a house. Did a shit load of renovation. Then upgraded the cars a few years later. Holidays, clothes, meals, all the usual shit

I've only met her twice but it gave her a right 'above you' attitude. Now she's asking her 71yo dad for a loan etc and I'm lolling because obviously returning to work is beneath them now.

It's not just that though. It's the maintenance of the lifestyle the build for themselves. Normal people are not financially literate.

This is still the case, although I’ve deviated to euromillions and occasional lottery when it’s one of those “must be won” draws.

Note this Friday is a 10 uk millionaires guaranteed draws so I’ve got a few lucky dip tickets on that.

    Hopefully on Saturday I’m retired.

    This is it for me.

When the mega millions jackpot got up to 1.5bn the other week we got involved. Winner was from here in Jacksonville. A week later someone else from here won it again. For a measly 36 million.

I don't think anyone actually wins the house on those things [the vast majority of the time] - there's usually a clause saying unless £x value of tickets sold the prize is substituted for a cash prize, which is usually about 60% of the value of money received through tickets. Maybe that one's not a scam, and sometimes the scam works in a different way [developers 'giving' properties to Charity for full market value etc] but I'd be surprised. There was one for a development up the hill from where my in-laws live recently [this development is fronted by some people who companies house suggest have had previous dealings in the nightclub industry] and the houses you could win, with the draw closing at the end of March or something, were level ground. Not a chance anyone won, oh look, it's back and going again:

Which did a thing about them.

Small print on that is great. Led me down the free entry rabbithole which must be some kind of UK private lottery law thing - like when ITV advertise that you can enter via post for essentially nothing [although perhaps the price of a stamp is becoming more akin to the price of a text entry I guess]. I used to be all over that shit for the TdF when stamps were dirt cheap, never won alas. The free/postal entry for the house scam one was a laugh though. You had to put a very specific set of information CLEARLY on your entry, but it couldn't be typed, had to be handwritten.

For all those misgivings, some people do win, as I bought a house of someone who had acquired it in that very way about 15 years ago.

Haven't even thought about it in months, so this is a sign for me to do this evenings and win it.

I assume the old 'everyone gets a cut' rule as discussed in the NUFC lunatic's thread from many years ago still stands?

As a UK resident I am now able to partake myself through legit [ie not some weird Gibraltarian spin-off] channels

If you extrapolate the return in investment on that I'm sure you could get a few involved on here.

I still use John's joke about the chances of winning the lottery being fifty/fifty, because you either win or you don't, and people still attempt to correct me on it. RIP John.

I wonder what the absolute minimum to fuck up the wall is, or whether there is a sort of sweet spot where you win enough to be idiot-proof but not so much that people cave in under it. I imagine the people who lose it all - other than the small number of 'Lotto Lout' types, or that tit who put millions into Livingston FC - are the people like DS knows, who think a couple of million goes a lot further than it actually does, and people who think it makes them something they aren't, i.e. instead of just buying flats to rent out they try to be a properly developer and sink money into shit projects. Those people surely couldn't burn through the super jackpots, but you could see somebody blowing double figures easily enough.
