It's been announced today that a factory in my town is closing down and will be gone by mid 2018. Probably one of the largest employers in the town and this comes within a year of another large factory announcing it was closing down too. Two of the largest employers with decent manufacturing wages in the town closing down within a year of wach other. This place is going to be a proper depressing post-industrial wasteland soon.

How odd, I thought of you when I heard it on the news just now. Assuming it's the same one anyway.

One isn't the same as the other though.

If I'm vocally proud about being a white person, what does that say about me? It says I'm proud that white people enslaved and discriminated against other races and nothing else.

However, if I'm vocally proud about being a black person, that says I'm thankful that my ancestors overcame slavery and discrimination and fought their way into being considered equal to white people in society.

The only context I ever see references to 'black pride' is in lame attempts to give poor kids a bit of self-respect. I think if you're so desperate for self-esteem that you have to be proud of your race then you've got bigger issues that need solving.

Most white people did not enslave anyone, and in fact many black people enslaved their own people or sold their own people to slave masters. People inventing things has fuck all to do with their race though, does it.

White people can't be proud of being white without coming across as racists because there's nothing positive that white people have done with regards to race. That's the point I'm making. Who invented what has absolutely no bearing on somebody being proud to be black/white.

All that springs to mind when I think of Ballymena is that no matter when anyone refers to it, they always say Ballymena-hi. Or Ballamema-hi to be more precise.

It probably is ignorant, as in some far corner of the internet will be an example of white people doing good things with regards to race. But the general consensus is very bad. Slavery was bad. Not letting black people sit down on buses was bad. Any positives aren't well known and aren't the reason why people are proud to be white.

Muhammad Ali, who famously won an Olympic gold medal and still got kicked out of a racist cafe. I wonder why he sought to turn his blackness into a positive.

White people have much more money than black people, on average, which is the difference, not the skin colour of various good and bad people historically. You don't need to feel proud of arbitrary things if you have enough cash to be proud of your gold plated speedboat instead.
