We had a thread on the old board about actors who'd had preposterously long careers, or who'd kept working until a ridiculous age, and I think Eli Wallach and Betty White were the winners.
Mickey Rooney kind of destroys the history books in that regard. First role in 1927, last in 2014.
He's something of an anomaly in that he was doing stage work before he was two and went on to actually have a career in acting, but he isn't miles ahead of everyone by any metric. Hitler's favourite actor worked from the early twenties until he died this decade.

It's hard to see what the way forward there is, really. Further concessions from FARC and re-running the referendum, or literally having to carpet bomb the jungles and flood them with troops in a 10-1 ratio to try and annihilate them militarily.
I wonder how a similar vote would have gone here at different periods. There might have been polling done over the years, but I bet we would have voted likewise at least into the late-nineties.
When they had a referendum on the Good Friday Agreement here, it was a landslide 'Yes' vote. There was a small hardcore on the republican side who considered it a sell-out, and a somewhat larger minority on the unionist side who weren't having anything to do with "Sinn Fein IRA" - but most people just wanted the fucking thing to be over with.
We let out the prisoners as well, but there's nobody today - who should be taken seriously, anyway - who can say we'd have been better off if the GFA had been rejected.
For all the shite this place gets, the peace process here is probably as good a benchmark as any of how to deal with these things.
The south had to have a separate referendum to amend their constitution, in effect recognising the right of self-determination for the north and not claiming jurisdiction over 'the six counties'. That got about 94% of the vote, so presumably the only people who voted against it were Gerry Adams' mates and a few embittered Irish speakers in the Gaeltacht.

In the 70s, 80s and 90s, everyone cared about the IRA. In my early childhood I remember it constantly being the biggest news topic, along with the Balkan wars.
By '98 it would have been voted through on a tide of Blairism though.

Your early childhood was the early nineties, when it was moving towards the ceasefire, it's initial breaking (bombing of Canary Wharf) it's re-establishment and then the GFA. It was definitely prevalent as a result, but probably not at the forefront of the national consciousness in the preceding years - outside the major incidents.Quote:
