There is some intuitive cleverness there. Homing in on China and de-industrialisation and immigration and rolling it all together was clever, seemingly seeing through a lot of the bullshit that surrounds foreign policy has been a bit of a success for him, and his personality is/was well-suited to the culture war stuff (particularly when 'respectable' Republicans earn their respectability by just surrendering to it); but then the things that make him good also make him shit, because he doesn't seem to have the - for lack of a better word - 'seriousness' to actually do much about any of it beyond blunt policies and moaning.

Are we confusing winning elections with being a good politician? Because that is only part of it, the same way Edward IV was regarded as an excellent warrior and commander but a more lacklustre king. Trump won an election and galvanised support in a way not seen before as mentioned here but what has he achieved for it? The SCOTUS appointments fell into his lap, he is seemingly a poor legislator who relies heavily on executive orders to get his own way, or at least give the illusion he is keeping his promises. He spent almost as much time in his term campaigning as if the 2016 election had not happened as he did playing golf.

Like Boris, absolute crushed the general election but it's hardly been a political masterclass since he got in, even with a commanding majority.

Any old wanker can win the X Factor but doesn't guarantee they will have a decent music career.

When did the media become the ones to be the final word and declare winners in these things? Surely there’s some official thing that needs to or has America completely handed the keys over?

I think this is always the case. They have projections based on the incoming results and then call it when they are hit. The counting continues in each state and the results could be marginally different but not significantly so (which is why they can call it).

I think the Electoral College has a lot to do with the perennially low turnouts. Every year people in 43/50 states know their vote isn't going to make a difference, because they live in a solid red or blue state, which makes it a lot easier not to give a fuck.

People toss around “Trumpism” all the time and after four years I genuinely have no clue what they are yammering about.

In terms of Trump himself it doesn’t seem to be anything outside of narcissism / egotism. He’s difficult to describe in political terms because he doesn’t seem to have any conventional political goals. If he does, he doesn’t pursue them outside of media. Republican leadership just rolls him for their political priorities while using him to access a voting base they can’t reach.

Of course it is a failed coup. If you attempt to set up a perception that the count is rigged or should be stopped by changing how votes are counted only in states you are closely contesting. Then you follow it by refusing to accept that there were not improprieties after 60 odd cases are thrown out at all levels. Cases in which when pressed to actually show fraud lawyers demure because they don’t want to lose their licenses for lying under oath. A tactic, which Lindsey Graham of all people pointed out in a Senate speech last night, was last employed to overturn elections during Reconstruction to instill Jom Crow and create a white hegemony.

I think people misunderstand 'freedom of speech'. He has freedom of speech, Twitter decided having him exercise it on their platform was not what they wanted, so they took him off it. The Democratic Party just want to take him out of the picture for 2024, which is smart. That and, rightly, more than a few of them probably feel that he tried to incite violence against them personally and want to make him pay for that. As an extremely casual outside observer politics in the US seems to have been one side trying to thwart/undo the previous doings of the other side for much of my lifetime [to almost the exclusion of everything else - I appreciate this is, to an extent, true in all systems]. I was having this discussion the other day and came to the conclusion that they need a Tony Blair type figure to [properly] try an win the middle/people from the other side [to the extent that they basically torch a lot of their alleged base] and/or some sort of constitutional 'crisis' to flip standard party divisions on their head somewhat (a la Brexit in the UK). Maybe if Trump's mob start an actual war with their guns then the second amendment could become that issue, but I doubt even full scale conflict between the followers of Trump and the US Army would be enough to shift that particular object. There would always be the argument that this is exactly the sort of thing the second amendment was designed to protect against. :cab:

The impeachment was for perjury, or lying to congress, or something of that ilk. One fun side-consequence is that it's basically the last time anyone answered a meaningful question in a political setting with anything other than "I do not recall".

I was thinking the same, I've never backed the winning side in an election overall, maybe the 2010 coalition, spent most of my time in London voting against Frank Dobson and Emily Thornberry on general principle. The problem there, is that my local councillors are brilliant. They're also Tory. That doesn't translate well to their party running the country, as we've seen.

Yeah but as we have already litigated a really good local MP means a lot to people who haven't reduced politics to United vs Liverpool and will defend their pet biter/rapist as long as they wear the one true symbol. Whereas in my constituency there is a lot of 'lol Labour' and always has been even in the face of multiple Tory MPs who are uncontactable until they break cover for an unannounced impromptu photo op with the PM at a local attraction before disappearing again.

Of course that may or may not lead to a more effective system of government nationally (perhaps not, given the current situation) but accessible MPs of any rosette colour should be the rule, not the exception. I know a lot of people don't like them for various reasons but when my mate was having issues with his offshore wind farm company and he and others wanted to unionise due to dangerous working practices, it was John McDonell and Jezza Corbyn who met them for lunch and listened to their concerns on a trip to Westminster when they could have easily fucked them off.

Don't know if this happens everywhere, but around here a lot of the councillors constantly switch parties so that they're in the party who are likely to get voted in at that particular time. There's one woman who has been Tory three times, Lib Dem twice and is now an independent.

I know it was also said of many of the New Labour Scots (Alistair Darling, John Reid etc) that they might have been Tories except for the fact that they came from Labour-voting cities in Scotland so to be a politician they had to join Labour.

We're in a slightly more true believer era now so there might be a bit less fluidity than there has been.

MPs are another matter, but I can absolutely understand councillors jumping back and forth. A lot of their work is apolitical and like Spikey's area, many of my good councillors are (currently) Tory, but I'd still rather die than vote for one of their MPs.

Oh without doubt there are still vast swathes of the house of Commons who would just back the party most likely to get them on the gravy train if they hadn't already nailed their colours to the mast. Look at the likes of Woodcock who was a Labour MP in Barrow until he knew his time was up then went to the papers slating Corbyn in exchange for a Tory peerage.

I make no judgment as to the merits of the decision, and as with anything I am sure their is nuance to explain it away, but on a surface level is it not a bit odd to have a legal system whereby courts/judges are able to impose staggering fines on people who are then effectively denied a right of appeal unless they can stump up the cash? My suspicion is that, were this a matter of debate or argument then perhaps that wouldn't be the case, and Donny T is in this predicament because of the scale and flagrancy of his 'offending', but it does strike me as odd that a judge can effectively insulate their decision from appeal or review by imposing an insurmountably large enough penalty.

Bet Michael Bloomberg is absolutely loving this and will be only too happy to make a derisory offer for Trump Tower.

But isn't inflating his assets part of what he's in hot water for? So setting a high penalty means he can only appeal if he wasn't lying in the first place. If he can't meet the bond it proves he is/was lying and an appeal is moot.

Not really, as the fine/bond needs to be covered by liquid assets, not real property which is what he was/they were inflating the value of, which I'd say is a fairly standard thing to do, they just seem to have done it to absurd levels.

Like I said, I'm sure there is a reason, just on its face it seems odd for a court at that level to essentially be able to make its ruling unappealable. From further investigation I think it is within the gift of the appeals court to stay the enforcement/require a lesser bond, but I guess you have to have a reasonable prospect of success for them to contemplate that and maybe Donald and Co don't really.

He also had plenty of warning, real estate firms tend not to have stacks of cash lying around (despite him claiming under oath to have 400mil in cash on hand) but for someone as rich as he's supposed to be he should have been selling off stuff to meet the bond. As usual he just does lots of crimes, boasts about how rich he is then when it actually comes to paying for something he's weirdly strapped for cash.

It's almost like he's not being entirely truthful.

Can you not just make a law if you have Congress and the presidency?
