I'm sure everyone knows to some extent that websites cost money. In order to keep The Third Half going someone needs to keep paying for it. At the moment, SvN pays for the domain name and I pay for the hosting.

I've created a GoFundMe page where we can all donate and it will show how much money we have raised. I figured this would be more successful than asking everyone to send me money via Paypal and take my word for it with regards to how much we've saved up to put towards the forum.

Now there are two things that definitely need paying for, which are the hosting and the domain name.

SvN if you let me know how much the total cost of the domain name is, I will add it to the target amount.

The hosting costs £69.98 for two years. The hosting company have said I can pay for more years at once, albeit for no bulk-buy discount. Despite this, I still think it will be worthwhile to get a few years paid off and sorted if possible.

The third thing we could potentially raise money for is a genuine vBulletin license. One member has previously offered to pay for this, but as it is £168.04 I think it's only fair we try to crowd-fund the fee. However, I must stress that this should only be considered once the domain and hosting have been covered.

The page to donate can be found at www.GoFundMe.com/TheThirdHalf (https://www.gofundme.com/thethirdhalf)

I have set the initial target as £518.

This takes into account ten years of hosting, totalling £349.90, and the £168.04 for the license. (The actual total is £517.94)

Would anyone here be happy to donate? 38 people voted in a recent poll, which gives us a rough idea of active members. Obviously not every one of those will be able to donate, and some will give less than others, but even if everyone donated £2 it would at least cover the hosting for another 2 years. I'd say that should be the bare minimum target.

Feel free to discuss this to death before any money gets put in the pot, and equally you're more than welcome to start donating already, but please use this thread to discuss how you hope the future pans out for the forum and how you can help pay for it.

For those who either can't afford to donate, or simply don't want to, don't worry about it.

10 years of hosting feels a bit extreme. Hosting companies are ten a penny and there's nothing to say that TSO (our current host) will even be around in 10 years (although I do appreciate that they've been around since 2003). We've also got the issue of database size that we discussed over PM, which means we're likely to have to start deleting old threads in about 6 months. I'd much rather we spend the money on hosting that guarantees the availability of older threads but pays for fewer years of hosting. That can either be with TSO or with an alternative, I don't really mind.

What does the forum think?

It would also tie us to their shitty cloud system that goes down all the time and is largely a load of overpriced wank. I looked into it. The only thing that would maybe be worth it is a VB4 license but even then we're sorted at this point. I can't see any additional features out there that we need and our anti-spam bot works fine and can even be doubled in strength if need be.

It's good that you've all raised so much so quickly - perhaps a little too quickly because it's still not 100% agreed upon how to invest. I'm waiting for SvN to get back to me, and hopefully he's got some good ideas in regards to the hosting.

As for the vBulletin license, that's not really my area of expertise but I'll look into it further because I wasn't aware of phonics' views on that front.

Worst case scenario is we pay for 12 months hosting and continue as we are for a bit. The money won't go to waste though, don't worry. And I won't spend it on something non-forum, you can trust me on that.

As for the business cards, they were dispatched on Monday so may well be at my parents house by now.

We've reached the target I set when creating the page (£518) and I'm not sure if it will let people keep donating beyond that.

Just to keep you updated, there are some doubts over whether the current hosting package is the best for the long term plan for the forum. SvN is looking at alternate solutions so that we can continue without having to delete older content. It'll be more expensive but worth it.

The idea for the license is on hold. If we have money left over to purchase a license, then we'll go ahead with that too. However even if we get the legitimate license we'll stay on version 4 (rather than 5) of the forum software, because it works fine and all the modifications are configured to work with 4.2.2.

GS
25-03-2016, 12:30 PM
I'm happy to trust SvN's judgement on the matter. As I mentioned above, the one thing we need to avoid is the cloud flares etc. which led to having to move here in the first place. If we get that plus the ability to save older threads plus hosting for a few years, then we're well set.

Is it a question of what's "needed"? If this place goes dark and sits here quietly for a few years, it's not exactly the end of the world. It's not likely we're saving the money to invest in our pensions otherwise.

We haven't moved yet. My current thoughts are that we're in no rush to move, because as soon as we do, we start eating into the fund. We're currently paid up for a while, and we're about halfway to the max database size (at which point we start having to delete threads).

If the consensus is that people want to see their hard earned put to use ASAP then we can move in the next week or so.

http://sway.ie/pitchsideledadvertising/

Contrast this with Premier League advertising and the difference is astronomical. Prices start at £2,500 at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light, but if you want an LED board facing the TV cameras you will have to pay a whopping £15,000. Then you have the likes of Old Trafford whereby you can’t even purchase advertise space. Of course, when you apply the viewing figures and the extensive global reach – this spend is a bargain – however, for smaller, nationally focused businesses in England, the Football League presents the optimum return on their sponsorship investment. Barriers to entry are much lower with English Football League advertising, as are prices.

Pepe
11-05-2016, 10:28 PM
By embracing pitch-side LED advertising at Football League Matches, companies are aligning themselves with fantastic events and experiences and they are doing so for a fraction of the price. Barnsley, a League One team, has already drawn in an attendance of over 10,000 at Oakwell this season. Their pitch-side advertising packages start at a mere £350. Vicarage Road, the home of Championship side Watford, has attracted over 15,000 people in their last two games. Companies can advertise there from £24 per game.

Lets do it.

Boydy

Baz transfered me the money a few weeks ago. None of it has been spent yet, as there's literally no point. We're still quite a bit under the limit of the max database size at our current host, and as soon as we move, the money will start being used up. As long as it's alright with Baz, I propose we stay on the current host until we start approaching the 1Gb mark (the max size) which will probably be around the autumn/winter. At that point we'll move to the host, and I'll setup a public spreadsheet that logs how much we're spending and the current balance of the cash.

We can, of course, spend some of the money for other purposes - I'll let the board decide that.
