View Full Version : Name The Song

I'm struggling a bit because my mind is a bastard, there's a band and song that I can't remember and not remembering has been pissing me off all day, I can't let it go.

I'm giving you very little to work with here:

They might have been Scottish.

I thought their name was something like The Dykeenies and that may be the only reason I thought they were Scottish and make the first hint useless because it's not The Dykeenies.

The song I remember (or not) by them was extremely over the top (which means they were probably actually American), possibly quite synthy. It was quite a shitty poppy song I think was on music video channels.

The video for the song had the band standing side by side, mostly white from what I remember, just them and a load of lights shining on them.

I can't remember how the song goes at all, so can't upload a clip of me singing some of it.

Think it was around 2004-2007.

I'm fairly convinced they were The D******

I think.

Name the Song/Band!

The Bravery? They did a fucking shit song around that time that kind of matches that description and was on the music channels.

There is good money to be made in a Now That's What I Call Blairism compilation. Money which can then be spent on pasta and multiple house deposits.

But then you'd have to have that Children in Need cover of Lou Reed on it, possibly twice, and everyone would remember that it exists, and we would all be sad.

Nope, I'd forgotten about them too, so you may be have solved tomorrow's problem for me.

Is it Hot Chip? They sort of meet the description, assuming you've got it wrong.

Reading the description again, that sounds bang on really.

I have their album somewhere. It was an absolute shocker.

For fucks sake.

For some reason I thought the first post would be some hero knocking it out the park.

It's no one anywhere near as famous as what's been mentioned so far. The main thing I'm remembering is the white lights, almost floodlights, above them in the video. It wasn't monochrome like the Bravery video though. Think they were wanky Americans rather than Jocks now but the name was definitely similar to The Dykneenies.

If it turns out to have actually been The Dykneenies then I'm done.

I heard the guy interviewed on the radio probably last year and he sounded like an utter mess.

OK Go?

Blink 182?
Alien Any Farm?
The Dykneenies?

Samadini

Ok Go fit the 'wanky American video' description, but they're too famous.

This band was a bunch of absolute nobodies as far as I was aware, came in with a properly shouty over the top number with flashing lights and synths and then disappeared from my memory for about 10 years until this awful awful day.

Samadini

I honestly can't cope with it being The Dykeenies. I went through all the videos on YouTube and one of them had flashy lights but it's not the right song. They kind of sing like who I'm thinking of though.

The only artist in my list with "The D-" is The Decemberists, just in case that helps...

Folky rather than synth.

This is worse than Taz's effort. :D

This is such a hard thing to Google.

Possibly Scottish shit band with one semi famous song flashy lights.

Hoobastank?
The band that did the song for a jeans ad and vanished?
I'm probably going too far back.

Bowling for Soup?

EDIT: forgot about the synth bit.

Samadini
23-02-2016, 11:48 PM
Actually Hoobastank was who I was going to mention in the original post, as the song was very shouty like one of their songs, just with electronic shit going on.

Samadini

I think we're getting their lads.

Get on vocaroo and hum it for us.

Samadini
24-02-2016, 12:17 AM
That's the stupid thing. I don't remember any of the song at all. I just know that I will when I see the video again.

I actually used a website a few years ago where you hum a song and people get back to you with what it is.

Hearing my humming come up when I was randomly listening to other hums was horrifying.

I've just spent the last hour or so looking through Reading festival lineups and not hit the target, so I'm dropping the Scottish line of enquiry and going with them being American.

Synthy Hoobastank is probably as good as it's going to get from me, so I need some beast to find this tomorrow and save me.

Having listened to Dykeenies now, they're dreadful and I can't think of anything particularly close to that style. Have you tried similar artists on Last.fm?

I think I'm safe for the night. I gave it one last 'band names what done sound like The Dykeenies' in Google and seems to have been the final straw for my brain.

Can I be Adam?

Thought of a couple that have been bugging me for a while. Both recent (last 5 years or so probably), both hip-hop/rap tunes:

1) Lots of staccato strings and a male vocal, quite a lot of electronic effects used on the voice plus a bunch of other random noises scattered throughout the song. The guy sounds kinda anguished (?)

2) Kinda low, electronic bass sound, it's mainly just long, slow notes with some guy repeating 'hip hop' a bunch of times and some other rapping

I'm pretty sure these are relatively well known, but I've no idea what they're called or who they're by. Appreciate any guesses
