The discussion in the other thread made me wonder about this. What's the best film released between 2005 and 2015? Here's my list:

The Master
Her
Inside Llewyn Davis
Frances Ha
Under the Skin
Nightcrawler
Ida
Force Majeure
The Great Beauty
Bridge of Spies
Carol
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Moonrise Kingdom
Whiplash
Gravity
Upstream Color
Computer Chess

Going through lists like this (http://www.avclub.com/article/100-best-films-decade-so-far-51-100-217387) has made me realize how many films I still need to watch.

Avoid Uncle Boonmee on that list. Biggest load of shit I've ever seen in a cinema.

I really liked Moon. There's probably something I'm forgetting but that is one that sticks in my head.

Moon was brilliant.

It's a good job a big Hollywood studio didn't get hold of it or it would have been shit, most likely. Saying that, I quite enjoyed The Martian as well, but even that was a little bit over the top for me. The protagonist got almost every decision right and just happened to be a genius botanist.

Gravity was only a nice view and nothing else.

I just got Moon on BluRay.

Yeah stupid Hollywood, don't they know that only average joes are chosen to be astronauts in real life?

1-20 in that link, of the films I've seen is a bit :cab:

I like Scott Pilgrim a lot but the 19th best film of the decade?

Plus The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Tree of Life shouldn't have been included at all.

I've seen precisely 0 from Spoonsky's list.

I've seen Bridge of Spies and if that's speaking for the rest of the list it's a lot of savagely average fare.

Lucky Number Slevin just slips in being released on the 24th Feb 2006

Moon was produced by the low budget arm of Sony Pictures. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Although I did find this while I was looking

Moon grossed £700,394 from its domestic release (UK)

Christ. It felt like it was in the Top 10 for ages. Goes to show how little you have to sell these days to have staying power.

Scott Pilgrim is turgid shit.

Having a quick glance online to jog my memory I'd probably go with The Prestige if I had to pick one.

If he hadn't have been a genius botanist (and you can definitely see why they'd send one to Mars for soil analysis, etc.), then it'd have been a very short film.

I generally don't mind contrivances in the setup of a film, as long as the resolution is sensible. I get that it's a weird distinction, but you feel like they have to earn their happy ending, even if the situation they find themselves in is desperately fortunate/unlucky.

On films that haven't been mentioned:

District 9
Pan's Labyrinth
Toy Story 3
Mad Max: Fury Road
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Zero Dark Thirty

Also, Grand Budapest Hotel is the best Wes Anderson film I've seen, although I haven't seen Moonrise Kingdom.

There's so much shit on that AVClub list, but The Act of Killing appearing at five is great. I've mentioned that a few times both here and on the old board, and I'm not sure anyone's bothered to watch it yet. It's a documentary so doesn't really fit in here, but fucking watch it.

A huge lol at Tree of Life being the third best film of the decade. Third worst would be far closer to reality.

Most of my favourites have been mentioned but I'll add a couple that haven't.

The Intouchables
Robot and Frank
The Man From Nowhere
Amour
The Raid
Predestination
Inside Out
Room
Cache

I had to check the release date on Cache, and although I'm two and a half hours late I'm having it anyway.

By an unknown director and with a low budget. When I was referring to Hollywood I was referring primarily to the big budget arm.

I have no fucking clue as I don't keep a tab on release dates. Of what has been mentioned:

Moonrise Kingdom
Moon
Lucky Number Slevin
The Prestige
The Intouchables

are all quite good.

EDIT: A quick glance at that link shows The Social Network at 9. :harold:

Surely the degeneration of 60s skinhead culture from its roots in the Soul and Reggae scene into white supremacy is plenty substantial?

Decent list. Bolded the ones that would definitely be in mine. I watched Her again the other night and it really is superb - I think I might even put it above Lost in Translation for that sort of film.

That that and Eternal Sunshine are now more than a decade old is a bit grim though.

EDIT: My nines on IMDB are:

Her
The Great Beauty
The Master
The Selfish Giant
Amour
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Blue Jasmine
Inherent Vice

Bottom two in particular I'd probably need to watch again to see if I stand by that.

I like threads like this (I swear we had something similar about good films recently) because it reminds me of loads of things I haven't got round to seeing yet. I'll probably forget about this thread when it comes to actually watching a film and not knowing what to watch though.

Much more big, Hollywood focused than my overall list it would seem, I don't know if my viewing habit has changed, my taste or what I'm exposed to, or perhaps just that this decade has seen big Hollywood studios pumping out all of the best movies.

10/10
Inception

9/10
Shutter Island
Cloud Atlas
Dallas Buyers Club
The Dark Knight
The Master
Interstellar

8/10
Up
Star Wars Ep 7: Force Awakens
In Bruges
Grand Budapest Hotel
Gravity
Nightcrawler
Inglorious Basterds
No Country for Old Men
Wolf of Wall Street
Argo
Whiplash
The Departed
Scott Pilgrim vs The World
Casino Royale
Ex Machina
Skyfall
How To Train Your Dragon
Pan's Labrynth
Senna
Birdman
An Unreasonable Man

I couldn't get in to this, don't think I watched all of it. Might have to try and watch it again.

It's a polarising film for most people. There are a few people here who can't stand it. I thought it was a masterpiece, obviously.

The Merse
28-01-2016, 11:04 PM
Similarly yours has made me realise how many I haven't rated on IMDB - Social Network, A Serious Man, Tyrannosaur and Black Swan would all have featured with a 9 for Black Swan I should think.

Surely the degeneration of 60s skinhead culture from its roots in the Soul and Reggae scene into white supremacy is plenty substantial?

Little disappointing that you think the culture descended into white supremacy. The perception was dragged down into it, but the culture didn't. Non-racist skinheads still outnumbered those that were racist, and the anti-racist skinhead groups were pretty numerous.

I will have to watch it again, too many films over the years I have enjoyed.

Creed,Dallas Buyers Club, The Dark Knight, Star Wars Ep 7: Force Awakens, In Bruges, Nightcrawler, Inglorious Basterds, No Country for Old Men, Wolf of Wall Street, Argo, Inception, Shutter Island, Gone Girl, Blood Diamond, The Prestige, The Departed to name a few for me.

I don't think I'd ever consciously made the association between Her and Lost in Translation, it seems so obvious now to me.

Maybe it's an American thing. I love it and all my friends do. You're probably the first person I've heard who's disliked it.

It was a load of smart-alec east coast metropolitan coffee-drinking cunts making clever quips at each other for two hours amid really annoying visuals. Why is the camera always fucking perpendicular?

'Hey Fox, is this film the lowest postmodernism can sink?'
'How would I know? I'm a fox.'
