I've tried googling this but not found a fix that actually works yet. On my doddery old home laptop svchost sometimes goes mental and takes a shit load of processing power and then when I kill the process everything runs quicker again (usually) but fucks up in other ways. Is there a simple idiotproof way to fix this?

Press Win + R and type 'msconfig' and click on Start up and see if there is anything you are disable that doesn't need to startup on boot up. If you have loads of icons on your bottom right taskbar, this might help with the svchost issue. Stuff like iTunes etc.. this will all take up memory and CPU usage, after a while will slow things down.

Ah ok, go in to Safe mode if you are running windows and removing it from Add/Remove if you havent already.

Install Spybot Search and Destory from here - http://www.safer-networking.org/spybot2-own-mirror-2/
Update that once installed and run it, it will take about 10 - 15mins and it should remove all adware and malware.

Found this - http://www.spywareremove.com/removesearchconduit.html I would go in to Safe mode and remove what you can manually after the Spybot bit.

Pain in the arse by the looks of it

Use a different browser, IE. If IE is still doing the same reset the settings for IE.
Also try turning off the Router for a minute or two and turn it on and try connecting to the internet again.
Otherwise, if you are getting internet connection issues you might have Malware/Adware installed causing issues.

Install Spybot search and destory, update it and login to Safe mode and run it.

I say yes because when I play FIFA or watch Netflix for example I don't have any resets. Netflix you could say maybe the show/movie just loaded in the time it was up, but I feel like FIFA would be unplayable.

And oh actually I also used the Internet Explorer on my Xbox One to surf and it was working perfectly without any delay or hold up at all.

I forgot to mention I also did a complete windows reset of my laptop back to factory settings as well as ran a few different cleaners (malwarebytes, ad-aware, ccleaner, can't think of the other one)

I'm so puzzled.

Took me ages to find this thread.

This has been happening with my computer recently:

http://i64.tinypic.com/rqztcx.jpg

Seems to only happen on my browser and often instead of black squares it's like another part of the site that seems to show in a square in the wrong place (if that makes sense). If I scroll up and down so those bits go off the screen and then scroll back, it normally fixes itself so it's not a huge issue but it'd probably be better to work out what it is and fix it.

Any ideas?

Lads,

My computer has an overclocked cpu and overclocked RAM, my mate did this for me years ago so I know little about it.

I've bought new RAM (8gb instead of 4gb) so can I just swap the old out and the new in? Or do I need to set the old RAM to its default settings first?

Lewis
18-11-2015, 11:37 PM
Did it reach the Townsend of the Line?

TG09
19-11-2015, 02:26 AM
No you shouldn't need to change it, it should default back. As the new RAM has different details, just make sure you Motherboard can handle the new RAM, as in speed etc.. if the speed is the same as the 4gb you should be fine.

Townsend
19-11-2015, 08:55 AM
Hi TG thanks mate, spot on.

Townsend
21-11-2015, 07:23 PM
Hmm the new RAM wouldn't work, it's rated speed was too high for the mobo but I thought I'd be able to underclock it so that it would work, I couldn't

As such I will now be upgrading my CPU and motherboard. I've already got a decent graphics card, a good PSU and a case I like along with the new RAM so upgrading these two bits should do the job. Currently I have:

Gigabyte h55m-ud2h motherboard
Intel I3 530 @ 2.93ghz (has been overclocked as high as 4.4ghz)

Anyone got any advice on what to get instead? Don't really want to spend more than 250 quid maybe 300 tops. Also might look at getting a SSD to stick my OS on. Talking of OS how would I go about sorting that out once I'd installed the new motherboard and CPU? I've currently got a non-legit Windows 7.

Magic

Brilliant, my laptop would never shut down so I had to backdate my Intel MEI driver to fix this (according to our IT guy). I did, and hey ho it did actually shut down properly. However I lost my audio. I updated drivers, uninstalled, backdated, etc then I updated Windows. So I've lost my restore point, I still have no sound with either default Windows or the Realtek driver so it's fucked basically. Brilliant stuff.

It needs extras to actually do anything, yes. The same went for the previous models though - unless you bought a kit set. It's still pretty astonishing, especially as they've apparently manufactured them in Wales rather than the actual third world.

You don't have to solder anything. You just connect your usb peripherals (through a micro usb port, you'll probably need a usb hub) and a monitor (HDMI) and the power (micro usb again).

Tried to change the hosts file on my HP Stream (running Windows 10) so I could block ads on Microsoft Edge since it doesn't allow extensions yet and it won't load nay web pages at all. FFS. Someone help please.

I can't even change it back to the original hosts file now because it keeps saying the hosts file is in use by some other application. FUCK'S SAKE. Fuck you Microsoft and your shitty 'Edge' browser, if you just allowed extensions and I could block ads normally then none of this shit would have happened.

Can someone please help with this?

I can't edit the hosts file again because it keeps saying it's in use by another process, which seems to 'Cryptographic Services' so I can't return it to the old one now.

Fixed it. Safe mode worked.

Best way to do this, is to copy it to your desktop, make your changes then copy it back and overwrite it.

That wasn't working. It wouldn't let me overwrite it because it kept saying that it was in use by another process.

It let me do it in safe mode though so it's fine now.

"Cryptographic processes" sounds a bit virus-y. I'd scan everything in safe mode if I was you.

Safe mode without internet access.

I would use Spybot Search and destory as well, love that app.

That's probably ok - the combo of its name and the behaviour of you not being able to change your HOSTS file sounded dubious.

I think it not letting me change the hosts file is actually meant to be for better security.

I've just built myself a new PC but having to move up socket set and memory type means I couldn't move anything over with me. I do want to bring a HDD over with me and was wondering if I can just straight swap in from old PC to new?

It's not a boot drive, just used as mass storage, but it is moving from a Win 7 PC to a Win 10. I was wondering if there if it will work? If not is there anything I can do to make it work?

Raoul Duke
04-01-2016, 08:15 AM
Don't see why it wouldn't work. Can't you just get an external caddy and use it as a HDD? Why would the OS be an issue if they're both Windows?

Gray Fox

I'm just wanting to double check I'm not going to brick the drive trying to move it over. If it will work it can just swap straight over.

It'll work fine, assuming your old drive isn't ancient (i.e. it's got a SATA connection, not IDE).

Finally got round to having a good go on Remix OS. Still in Alpha so it's not 100% but after a bit of fucking Play Services is now working on it and can download apps. Needs a lot of ironing out but it looks promising for the full release.

That's basically what it is as Google have never got it right as far as that kind of OS goes. It'd never be a proper alternative to Windows 10 but it's handy to have on a memory stick to run on any PC with the added bonus of syncing everything properly like my phone does.

You'll more than likely get a better one elsewhere than Debenhams for the money. What do you want it for? That one seems to have no graphics card.

Mainly for:
* Microsoft office

* Football Manager 2011

Also want it physically sized so it's not a big clunky bastard.

Bloody hell, 2011 :D

You won't need much in terms of graphics power for AutoCad, I take it? Is it 3D modelling?

If you're not planning on playing any real graphics intensive games then you probably don't need to spend over £400. With a dedicated Graphics card you're looking at about £700-£750, cheapest. Might as well if you can budget for it. SSD's are nice, but depends how much you wanna spend.

I would say you will need a SDD harddrive and about 12GB Ram at speed of 1600Mhz minimum. for all that lot. i5 overclocked will be cheaper than I i7

Thanks chaps. All very helpful.

Only use CAD 2D. No 3D requirements.

On FM11, I think i need a decent processor as I'm in year 2037 with a lot of leagues. So the processing is getting painfully slow.

Would suggest this (take 12GB or 16GB Ram instead of 4GB), and if you already have a copy of Windows you can save yourself some money and maybe add a nice SSD or hybrid drive.

Ive got this annoying issue.
I have external speakers connected via the 3.5mm audio jack on my laptop
if I pause any audio and then play it again, it mutes the audio
I then have to go to the windows volume setting and move the volume slider all the way to zero, and then back up again.
