They'd probably be best off ditching the attempts at nostalgia and just going for a near all new approach at this stage. I can't see the former being anything but a disappointment.

You'd think advances in technology since it was last on will make for some pretty impressive competitors though.

Jimmy Floyd

Such a great programme on every conceivable level. I can't think of an obvious way to ruin it, either. How will they do it?

What a show. I remember as a small kid going out to some school thing and leaving my Granda with instructions on how to record the grand finals. I came home and he had recorded the wrong channel. Devastated.

Razor was the best.

I did like Razer. And Hypnodisc. There was one team I hated but I can't remember who or why. Probably Chaos II.

It was the funny little heshe that drove for Chaos 2. He/She was unsettling.

Was Chaos II (and presumably chaos 1) the flippy one?

What a waste of space Sir Killalot was, or whatever he was called.

They'll all be aerial drone type things now.

Yeah they were the first team to really get it right, at least in terms of being able to flip opponents. Only team to win it twice as well.

After checking and it being 2000 when Chaos 2 last won, it may have more to do with the fact that I was 13.

Jimmy Floyd

I see they've slipped an 'iconic' in early. Why do people not get pulled up on it? It's like a marketer's freebie word to make your thing sound amazing regardless of whether or not it is.

I remember seeing Hypnodisc and thinking it would be unbeatable.

The latter, as long as they are still remotely controlled. If they were to try to make them autonomous then that would be more interesting in a technical perspective, but you just need to watch those football playing robots to realize how much of a borefest that would be.

What sort of weapon did it have? What was the tournament all about? How were you beaten? I don't like the show so there's nothing I can tell from that angle. It was an inter firms competition (we had done a soapbox derby type thing a couple of years previously where I badly misjudged front end weight for a jump), main reason was that it was in bits from the previous fight and couldn't get everything repaired in time.

EDIT: The weapon was a flipper type thing in a wedge shaped front, but it was shaped in such a way that it could hold on to what it was flipping and suspend it. Main issue was traction to actually get under something heavy.

I'm so glad Foxic got pasted. That lad was a proper, proper twat. Shoving Dead Metal about was good.

Also lol at Thor. Cracking robot but the guy was a bit of a gimp.

Jonathan Pearce really is perfect for this.

Felt a weak group this week, but was gutted for Thor. Had that down as an absolute basketcase from the intro and it went on to don all and sundry with it's speed, maneuverability and fucking awesome hammer. He had the driving skills to do over (the likes of) Carbide as well.

They really need to get rid of the pit. It's such a shit thing, although it would have been nice seeing that gas pipe trying to climb out of it, as it claimed it could.

Bring on Chaos X.

Storm 2, which looks quite powerful. I think there is a lot to be said for just being able to shove anything around.

Well deserved.

Lewis
21-08-2016, 08:15 PM
Do you ever think that half of them (like Pulsar) are too fast for their own good? It takes a week to get the weapon going, so they would be better off half as fast and much more stable.

niko_cee
21-08-2016, 09:12 PM
Caught up on a double episode there. That big wheely bastard was a fascinating thing. It was ostensibly total shit, but somehow got by on the Richard O'Brien hutzpah of the dad and the fact that every other robot in the heat kept melting itself. You'd have thought those wheels would have been toast as soon as they were hit by a bar spinner.

So glad those IT twats with their £20k robot lost last week.

Loved Apollo just launching all and sundry that got in the way of its flipper.

Do you reckon there has been some BBC mandate that women be involved in most teams or something? And has that gone wrong with their various tasks being making the tea, making sure we have enough stamps and doing the colouring in?

niko_cee
28-08-2016, 09:02 PM
Haha. Fuck off Carbide. Dirty bastards.

Poor old Thor took a bit of a pasting.

Since when has this removable link thing been a thing? What is the point of it other than prematurely ending battles for no apparent reason?

Clunge
29-08-2016, 02:54 PM
The amount of link retirements in this series has been irritating.

But it's been a brilliant comeback. What a great series. So many memorable battles and some great new teams. So glad Apollo won rather than Carbide. That Thor guy was/is a total legend too.

Hope it gets another series.

It'll be some kind of safety feature, otherwise you might not be able to turn it off.

Sounds a bit cyberdyne. How are you supposed to remove it anyway? You'd think any actual danger could be dealt with by sending in Sir Killalot/the bomb disposal robot.

Flippers may be a bit dull in the age of the 'srimec', but flipping most of the house robots is still fairly awesome.

Disco
29-08-2016, 04:34 PM
I mentally gave those guys a pass when they did that, acceptable use of boring weaponry.

Having a killswitch is sensible (and not just intended for inside the arena) when it's sat on a table near everyone else, that's where you want a way of turning it off easily. Given these are things built in sheds by amatuer spods it's probably not a bad idea.

Thought that was pretty good. The £25k bot is/was SO the new Mortis.

Aftershock is pretty bitchin' though. You basically have about three seconds to kill it or you're toast.

randomlegend
06-03-2017, 10:30 AM
The new format is at least partly to blame, but this gentleman's agreement to limit damage is bollocks. I swear Razer/Hypnodisc just used to keep demolishing nerds until the timer went.

Browning
06-03-2017, 10:35 AM
I don't remember what the old format was, but I'd imagine this format gives you the most reason to smash someone to pieces. The chances of having to face the same dude again are quite high.

randomlegend
06-03-2017, 10:49 AM
Yeah, but the teams obviously feel like it's bad form to just demolish another team's robot when they still have other matches to play in the next few hours. It would certainly be the smartest thing to do purely from the point of view of giving yourself the best chances of winning, but it's not what's happening.

The old format was just straight knockout (right?) so once you'd beaten someone it didn't matter so much if you just took them apart, since they wouldn't have another battle til the next season.

Disco
06-03-2017, 01:51 PM
It's almost certainly something put in place by the production company, they don't want the later rounds to be half empty (or full of mostly broken shit heaps).

Also, was it always just the same few nerds coming back series after series?

Sir Andy Mahowry
02-11-2017, 06:36 PM
Pretty much.

There's not a huge pool of robotic nerds building battle bots to ensure a fresh set of dickheads each season.

Edit: Shit, I had no idea that a third season had started.

Hopefully he gets dicked on by Carbide in the final.

Poor John :(

Ian
06-11-2017, 08:35 PM
That guy from Rapid is a tosser as well, and while part of me wants to see him lob Carbide out of the arena at some point if he wins he might give the Carbide lads a job which may make them happy. Ultimately it'd be the lesser evil if somebody else found a way to trash them.

Was rooting for John though.

The rest of them could learn a fucking shit-tonne from the kids. What a bunch of posers and/or cry-babies. That Apex guy, jesus. He was the Foxic tosser from the last series I only just realised. Knob. Watching their stupid robot explode was utterly glorious.

Ian
07-11-2017, 07:52 AM
It was just satisfying that they didn't even have one good fight before it killed itself. First one it didn't work at all and then that wonderful bed-shitting exercise.

12-11-2017, 10:00 PM
Lol at those dickheads letting Nuts beat them because they were shitting themselves about that lucky attack on their wheel in the first heat.

Nuts actually winning a match :\

It's also such a shame that concussion (which is a really good robot) is made by such dickheads. The leader of the group might win king dickhead of the show.

Edit: Two fights and two lucky hits ugh.

All the other teams must be seething.

Sir Andy Mahowry
13-11-2017, 08:14 PM
Oh ffs.

Piss off Nuts.

Concussion bottled it the pussies.

Ian

Clunge
14-11-2017, 07:31 AM
Tbf, I was kind of impressed by Nuts 2. That death spin with the chains nailed two bots completely. Element of luck of course but still deserved. Concussion bloke almost as much of a tool as Foxic / Apex bloke.

Sir Andy Mahowry
27-11-2017, 11:45 PM
Ellis is such a twat but he reminds me so much of what I expect Randrew is like (confirm please Lewis).

Borderline autistic, labelled a 'Boy genius', has his Mum and Dad along for the ride etc. Probably loves 72% Venezuelan chocolate too.

Props to the guy, frankly. Self-taught engineer, builds what, for me, has been the most impressively designed machine of this new run and seems genuine and down-to-earth. That Magnetar death hum is immense, and I think it's probably the most all round aesthetically pleasing machine since Razor (which lost a lot of points for true cuntery).

Lewis
28-11-2017, 12:10 AM
I haven't watched any of this, because I realised during the last series that ninety per cent of the contestants are just making up the numbers so I could just watch the final, but I know who you mean and Randrew is miles lamer.

"Ten Robot Rumble" next week. Should be a laugh though it does seem like the winner will have won mostly by chance. Or at least luck might determine which poor bastards get mullered in the early scramble because there's too much shit to keep track of.
