Don’t worry, I had to in the end. There wasn’t even room for me to be on the floor.
What the fuck? Are you stitching Nike trainers together or something? :D

Lol @ Giggsy mixing this up with the job thread.
3 weeks since I've been caught speeding:
a) camera was faulty or not responding
b) the NIP is still with the leasing company
c) it's a summons, in which case they have around 6 months

Is Scotland different then? You’d get prosecuted for ‘failure to respond in relation to the identification of a driver’ down here.

Don't do it, Sincere. I picked it up and took it to a local garage to do the repairs and they charged me £80 all in.
They're crooks.
Just need a full service. They quoted me £170

Ya I'm sure Porsche rented the track out for the day.
Got caught by a speed camera the other day. :moop:How fast and what’s the limit? Is it a £100 and 3 points jobby or will they let you do a course to avoid the points and pay a [lower?] fee?
Boydy
29-06-2018, 05:19 PM
It's £60 over here. Not sure if I can do the course instead of getting the points. Was doing 44 (apparently, didn't think I was over 40 tbh) in a 30. It was just at the edge of a 30 zone though where there's fuck all around and I always slow down when I actually get into the village properly. But they had one of those mobile camera vans sitting there.
It's my own fault though. It's just annoying that I get caught like that but I've been coming into the village from the other direction before where there are actually are often pedestrians and that, slowed down to 30 like I should and had arseholes overtaking me inside the 30. Never any fucking speed cameras around for that.
Sold the Neon to a junkyard. Got $140 for it. :harold:

Having a diesel - now we know about the FRAUD - is probably a bit pointless unless you pile the miles onto it.
Sir Andy Mahowry

Neither.
Lowrider instead?
I did think about the Volvo S60 or Mazda 6 instead but keep coming back to the 3 series.

You don't like driving then? Diesel is always for people who just see cars as a tool from getting from A to B.
I assume F30 is some BMW wankery name too @Mahow? You always here cunts with their E and F numbers here, only car model you hear it from the owners.

I think the older ones are better cars, as well as cheaper. E46 probably the last good one. Alternatively, there is always the 135.
EDIT: The E30 is the best, of course.

Based on what I've put into Autotrader (petrol, manual, 2012 onwards, 50k miles or less, up to £18k, 1.8L+ etc) my options are the 3 series BMW 3 series, Mercedes C200, Audio A4 or the Mazda 6.
I'd probably stick to the BMW out of those options. The Mazda 6 is a nice car but that sounds overpriced. Maybe for a Mazdaspeed one.

There are two guys with GTRs that go to the track frequently. Bloody fast cars. Last time one broke and had to be towed home. They had a hard time putting it on the truck since it was so low.

13-11-2012: Report of blocked Diesel Particulate Filter on 2011 Peugeot 508 1.6 eHDi FAP Active costing 213 for a forced regeneration.
16-11-2012: Report of clutch or DMF failure on 18 month old, 28k mile 508 2.0 HDi. Peugeot paid for the repair.
31-12-2012: 'Gong' sound means that car battery is failing to hold sufficient charge and needs to be replaced.
20-1-2013: Report of 1.6 HDi 115 S&S EGC repeatedly going into limp home mode. Seems that it is very vulnerable to fuelling problems if there is anything wrong with the fuel used. Peugeot advises drivers to avoid supermarket diesel.
27-1-2013: Minor electrical niggles starting to emerge with 508's on the a single fleet are two cases of windscreen wiper motors burning out and several cases of noisy electric boot lock mechanisms that aren't responding to treatment with lubricating oil.
12-4-2013: Leak reported into load area filling wheel well with water. Comes in through the supposedly one way cabin vent flaps between the lower sides of the load area and the rear bumper side valance extensions (hidden by carpet inside the car).
18-2-2014: High wear rate reported for expensive 17-inch Michelin tyres on Peugeot 508 e-HDi.
15-6-2014: Economy figure for Peugeot 508 Active 1.6 e-HDi stop and start EGC 115 4dr Auto re-listed as 115g/km CO2, not 104g/km CO2.
30-8-2015: Front suspension arms of 30k mile 2011 Peugeot 508 2.2 HDI GT required re-bushing to pass MoT (which, economically, meant fitting new suspension arms). The worn bushes had also caused severe wear to the inner shoulders of the front tyres after 6,000 miles and they needed replacing too. This problem may only affect the 2.2 HDI GT that has different suspension from the rest of the 505 range.
29-11-2015: Owner of 72k mile 2011 Peugeot 508 1.6HDI reported engine failure due to a diagnosed electrical short circuit in the no 1 injector. Peugeot dealer advised it was impossible to purchase a simple single injector replacement, as Peugeot no longer supplied these original engine parts, and stated that the car had to have a full service kit fitted to it, which included 4 new injectors , fuel pipework and new electronics + a software download. 'Goodwill' from Peugeot was refused.
18-8-2016: Report of camshaft of 2011 Peugeot 1.6 diesel 508 SW failing at 78k miles. Quoted £5k for new engine: more than the car is worth, but a common engine so can be replaced much more cheaply. No contribution offered from Peugeot.
30-9-2016: Report of Peugeot 508 diesel suffering a dual mass flywheel failure at 3 years and 5 months old resulting in a £1,600 bill for new DMF and clutch.
28-3-2017: Report of one rear damper failing on Peugeot 508 RXE at 46k miles. Replaced under warranty.
6-7-2018: Report of failure of actuator of EGC on 2011 Peugeot 508 1.6 diesel e-hdi semi auto.

Honestly no. Our other car is a Fiesta but it does the job in regards to fitting two adults and a [rather large] car seat. I just linked that cos it was the first one I looked at. :rosebud:
Cars seem cheaper than I thought. Like this (https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201807248756421?max-monthly-price=150&seller-type=trade&fuel-consumption=OVER_40&min-monthly-price=0&advertising-location=at_cars&term=36&yearly-mileage=6000&postcode=wa94js&minimum-seats=5&radius=20&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&transmission=Manual&sort=mileage&deposit=500&quantity-of-doors=4&page=3) looks the business.
I'd be doing the finance option (at the bottom of the page) with a £500 deposit, 6000 annual miles and then anything upto £125 a month. Can I really get a BMW for £82 a month? Doesn't seem right.

That must be a massive pram, Baz.Its quite small really but when collapsed it somehow goes dead long. It did fit in the Polo if you took out the bottom of the boot (which wouldn’t be a problem) but it was properly wedged in to both sides of the boot so really wasn’t ideal.

Driving to Catterick tomorrow and hoping to nip to at least one of the DM Keith dealerships in either Huddersfield, Wakefield or Leeds on the way. Leeds is probably most likely because I like the look of this Fabia estate (https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201808029081693?radius=60&fuel-type=Petrol&postcode=wa94js&deposit=1000&year-from=2015&advertising-location=at_cars&zero-to-60=8_TO_12&quantity-of-doors=5&annual-tax-cars=TO_130&yearly-mileage=10000&max-monthly-price=150&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&maximum-mileage=35000&transmission=Manual&make=SKODA&term=36&sort=monthly-price-asc&page=1), purely because it's a tiny bit smaller than this Rapid Spaceback (https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201808039119076?radius=60&fuel-type=Petrol&postcode=wa94js&deposit=1000&year-from=2015&advertising-location=at_cars&zero-to-60=8_TO_12&quantity-of-doors=5&annual-tax-cars=TO_130&yearly-mileage=10000&max-monthly-price=150&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&maximum-mileage=35000&transmission=Manual&make=SKODA&term=36&sort=monthly-price-asc&page=1) in Wakefield. 4247 mm vs 4304 mm length only so not really much in it, but could be the difference between fitting two cars on the drive and not.
The Leeds dealership also has 2 regular Fabias - in grey (https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201808059169979?radius=60&fuel-type=Petrol&postcode=wa94js&deposit=1000&year-from=2015&advertising-location=at_cars&zero-to-60=8_TO_12&quantity-of-doors=5&annual-tax-cars=TO_130&yearly-mileage=10000&max-monthly-price=150&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&maximum-mileage=35000&transmission=Manual&make=SKODA&term=36&sort=monthly-price-asc&page=1) and in green (https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201808029081691?onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&quantity-of-doors=5&transmission=Manual&fuel-type=Petrol&sort=monthly-price-asc&year-from=2015&radius=60&advertising-location=at_cars&yearly-mileage=10000&max-monthly-price=150&term=36&deposit=1000&zero-to-60=8_TO_12&annual-tax-cars=TO_130&make=SKODA&maximum-mileage=35000&postcode=wa94js&page=2) - too so can see how the pram goes in them.
Huddersfield has another Rapid Spaceback but I don't like the different coloured roof (https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201807258774502?onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&quantity-of-doors=5&transmission=Manual&fuel-type=Petrol&sort=monthly-price-asc&year-from=2015&radius=60&advertising-location=at_cars&yearly-mileage=10000&max-monthly-price=150&term=36&deposit=1000&zero-to-60=8_TO_12&annual-tax-cars=TO_130&make=SKODA&maximum-mileage=35000&postcode=wa94js&page=2), so probably won't bother with that.
Actually I've just checked the Leeds dealership has 2 Rapid Spacebacks in (one diesel and one automatic, no thanks) so I'll probably just go to that one so I can at last gauge the size of all three cars in one place.

I once watched the 1980 (I think) US GP back on the Sky F1 channel we have in the UK, and the Glen looked a real beauty. Shame it is probably completely unsafe for anything except banger racing now.
It was really great. All I knew is that it was in the middle of nowhere, that it was historic, and that it had some decent elevation changes. All of that was right, but it is also at the top of a hill, so there are some really nice views, plus it has a lovely flow to it. The walls are right next to the tarmac though, so as you say, not good for fast open wheelers.
A bloody GT3RS was holding me and my mighty Fiat for like three laps (you're not allowed to pass until you get a point-by.) That must have been embarrassing. Eventually he surrendered and he quickly disappeared in my mirrors.

You can destroy a brand new clutch very easily in about three minutes though. That's what most dealers hide behind.

You see a lot of car people criticising BMW engines as actually quite shit, but it never seems to reach their mainstream reputation. My old man blew a couple of their straight sixes up back in the day (and they weren't even the performance variants, which were known for falling to bits); their powerful V8s don't have the best name; and that V10 they used for a few years is meant to be a disaster once something goes wrong. The smaller stuff seems okay, and their relatively relaxed V12s were always highly thought of, so obviously it was just everything in between.

Their straight 6 petrols in mainstream cars were always a safe bet. Not sure on their latest ones but certainly up until around 2006 any major issues were few and far between.
In general, they won't be any worse than the equivalent Audi or Merc. The V10 will be expensive to run but then it's a 500bhp V10 that revs to over 8000rpm in a saloon car, who else does it without similar eye-watering costs?

Case in point, what 4 cylinder diesel from that era isn't crap? You only realise how poor a 4 pot diesel is when you've never driven anything else then drive something with a petrol 6.
That S4 is also well known for timing chain issues, mounted at the rear of the engine, natch, so it's an engine out job. Most brands have their share of expensive issues on their performance models.
As a rule I think I'll stick to Mercedes for any V8 content in future though. Probably the safest bet from Germany.

All diesels are shit to drive but reliability wise, the VAG 1.9's were head and shoulders above what BMW were doing. Not even close.
Chain on the S4 was grand but I know what you mean. I've worked with lads who have had to do them on the 3.0TDI and the 3.2. Monster money. VAG timing chain tensioners around that time were made of cheese too.

I live down a busy street, with a school on it, that train commuters into London park on. I Parallel park every day and it’s piss once you’ve got the technique down. I think it took me about a week to perfect it. No idea why people struggle with it so much.
It’s all well and good boasting about your parallel parking skills but and the end of the day there are lots of contributing factors (size of the gap, size of your car, traffic, sensors, etc) where even the mightiest of parkers (o/) might mess it up. The worst thing you can do though is give up and drive off to park somewhere else.
niko_cee
10-10-2018, 08:07 AM
I've never known anyone be required to park in a difficult space for a parallel park. They're always at least big enough for two cars, at which point it just becomes a reverse near the curb without hitting it exercise (do you still fail for that)?
Trick is to take your test in something like an older new-style panda (or something equally as small, with the same visibility so no 500 twatmobiles) but I guess that wouldn't work in America as you'd have been crushed on the road before getting to that part of the test.

That's the one I like the most but it's a diesel (D4 181 R Design) as there's fuck all petrol Volvo S60's in the UK.
Go kick the tires of all of them and buy the one with the less sketchy looking seller.
The Mazda 6 is the boring option, but it will probably be the cheapest to maintain in the long run, especially with the low miles. With the BMWs they are going to rip you off every time any repair is needed. Might be similar with the Volvo, but the S60 is cool. I have never dealt with diesel, so probably best to ignore my opinion, but I wouldn't worry about it, they tend to be solid.

I didn't know Baz and me were in the Skoda owners' club. Finally we find something in common.
So my housemate has recently started learning to drive, and her Dad got her a car yesterday, however this morning she's been given a ticket for parking in one of the visitor spaces outside our flat without a permit. About a month ago some private parking signs went up, despite her having lived here for something like 5yrs & it always having been allocated parking outside our flats, and there's nothing on the signs to explain how you obtain a permit.
It seems like every car parked without a permit in our part of the bay has been ticketed, even the ones who have parked in their allocated spaces the same way they always have. I've said to her she should email our letting agents & the building management to confirm whether this is something that they can actually do, as we think the allocated parking space is part of the contract we signed, and I've also suggested she speaks to the other people in the building & goes to Citizens Advice, but does anyone else have any ideas how to go about challenging this?

No got it on a 24 month PCH deal from Bells Volvo in Northampton.
Payments are 24 x £273 so no big sums needed for initial payments etc. appealed a lot.

It's for 3am. Adaptive is way more useful though.
Your car looks too nice for your street.
I never use cruise control either. Also, I used to drive a Prius once in a while which had some lane assist shit and it was awful. Piece of crap was beeping all the time.

I use cruise control all the time in cars, I'll use adaptive cruise control even more though. Will be perfect where cruise control was limited - single carriageway 60's in heavy traffic when the lead car constantly fluctuates 5mph like a nonce.
Maybe my foot and ankle are more prone to aching than most but I couldn't do without it on a daily driver.

However, my Neon has a built-in fire extinguisher, a red button that says 100+ octane, and "Objects in mirror are losing" written on the rearview mirror, so that should put it firmly on the #2 spot.

My car (that I got in September) was in for MOT this morning. Needed one new wiper blade to pass. However the brake pads, brake discs, back wiper and both back tyres (on from original, 2013 plate) were "advisory." I only do about 6 miles a day now so I'm hoping this outlay will be the only work I ever need to do on it before handing over the keys to my daughter in 16 years time. If I tell myself that, the £350 bill is a bit easier to stomach.

I filled a price comparison website in and was quoted some car insurance at £450 a year, but I told them that I hadn't actually bought the car in question yet. When I rang them up today and told them I had bought it, they quoted my £940 on the basis that, despite having had a licence since 2006, having been insured on five different cars over the years, and driving different things at work, my lack of experience with this new vehicle would automatically revert me to being a twenty year old risk retard. What? Somebody else will do it for closer to £600, but even that annoys me.

A 2002 Mini that my uncle said I can have (nice of him). It actually has the same engine, and no doubt most other components, as the Mini my mother owns, which I have been fully insured on since late-2014. Not interested mate sorry.
The best I can find is sixty quid a month, which is about what my bus pass costs, so it is worth it to not have to get the bus.

Remember the Neon? Well, it couldn't pass inspection in PA, what with it not having a horn, parking brake, catalytic converter, correct-colored turn signals, being too loud, etc. So I had to "gift" it to my mother and she registered it in FL, where there is no safety or emissions inspection. Freedomz. :happycry:

With a second car it's best to get something that's more of a contrast, something that has the opposite strengths and weaknesses of the main car. If you enjoy an enthusiastic drive anyway.
