"We were screaming that he can't hear," witness Julio Rayos told The Oklahoman. Rayos told the paper that Sanchez had developmental disabilities and didn't talk.

"The guy does movements," Rayos told The Oklahoman. "He don't speak, he don't hear, mainly it is hand movements. That's how he communicates. I believe he was frustrated trying to tell them what was going on."

Neighbor Jolie Guebara told The Associated Press that Sanchez "always had a stick that he would walk around with, because there's a lot of stray dogs."

This is a minor gripe but I really don't get Bernie's tactics in debating Cassidey - Graham on CNN Monday noght. Are any senators going to change their vote because of it?

Can you bash the bill? Sure, but it has an approval rating in the 20's so why bother? All you do is lose the ability to say they lied and did not follow regular order (we did more we brought the debate to the people), and you allow them to distract with single payer complaints when they can't defend the merits of their own bill. We could have beaten every Senator over the head with "did they even tell you what was in the bill they voted on at midnight" for a year. Why throw that away for nothing?

If you modify the axis to start at your lowest point and end at your highest point, you can make a minuscule change look enormous. Usually you'll only want to do that if you're modelling a function of some sort, or if you're representing something graphically where the rate of change, or slope, is irrelevant.

So yeah, it would make the graph look flatter; but that's my point. Total fertility only dropped by 15% - which may be a fuckton, and I think it is, but looking at that graph you'd think it was cut in half.

A graph should show variation that is roughly comparable with what would be considered "normal" variation in that scale.

As much as you can exaggerate variation by zooming in too much, you also wouldn't show daily temperatures scaled to include to absolute zero.

I couldn't disagree more with that article. I thought episodes 1-3 were fairly balanced, whilst 4 and 5 have been very anti-yank (great stuff :) .

The only thing I agree with, is the slightly off-hand mentioning of Vietnam deaths - however, we have to remember that this is still a program aimed at a US audience - so I get why the focused so much on US deaths.

I fear the author went into the first episode, having already made there mind up - and didn't watch anymore. In fact, they complain that Burns say's that the Gulf of Tonkin incident was "true" (meaning; it happened) - he doesn't - in episode 3 the program clearly makes note of the fact that there was likely no second initiation by either side.

Yeah, it's kinda strange to see. The average age of a US soldier was only 19, war ended in '75, so I guess 62-65 is the average now - which just feels younger than you'd expect.

This is actually a really interesting observation if you expand it by a decade or so to the Civil Rights era. The core support that shows up at to the MAGA rallies mostly appears to be people in their early 70's to 40's. Another way to think of them? The last people who remember segregation as teenagers and their kids. We think these things are so much further in the past than they are.

Apparently other countries that had guns and got rid of them saw their murder rates by methods other than guns stay basically the same.

The problem with everyone having a gun isn't that it makes one person knocking another person off in an argument easier, although it definitely does, it's that it makes it easy for a headbanger like that bloke the other night to wipe people out en masse. If all he could get his hands on was a block of kitchen knives and a cricket bat there's no chance he could have harmed close to six hundred people.

As I said the last time we had this conversation, the astonishing thing isn't even that there's still a problem. It's the fact that the problem isn't unanimously recognised. I reckon if breakfast tea was somehow being used to kill thousands of people a year here we'd find a way to ban it, or at least heavily restrict who could lay hands on it.

I really don't get how it's pointless. Granted, isolated, it doesn't tell a full story - but I think it's just meant to say what it says = a country with more guns, has more gun deaths. Obvious, yes - but apparently not obvious enough from some Americans to fully comprehend.

I think that’s a straw man. I don’t think even the biggest Mert would say that more guns doesn’t lead to more people getting shot. Their argument is pretty much always ‘I need my guns to defend myself because bad guys have guns’.

Gun deaths of any colour happen because the supply of guns is so plentiful. In London, all the nasty black people can't get hold of guns so they stab each other, which, whilst not ideal, isn't as efficient numerically as using guns like their American brethren.

Most of those numbers are down to black people shooting each other at South American rates (without which they are merely comparable to the worst European nations), so the gun ownership graphs - which imply that most killings are carried out by [white] freaks with thirty guns each - are always a bit pointless.

They also account for suicides from what I understand.

Trumps amazing ability to just agree with what the last person told him carries on.

After slagging off the Puerto Ricans and telling them 'Your debt is really throwing us out of whack' he's now announced that he wants to cancel all that debt. Leading to this brain bending reaction:

The problem with gun control is how many obsessive there are in the gun ‘hobby’. Saw a post on reddit the other day where someone said owning that many guns with that many rounds of ammunition should see you flagged on a register and the overwhelming response was from people saying ‘I own that many guns and rounds of ammunition: should I be on a register?’ With no hint of irony. These people don’t think it is odd behaviour to horde more firepower than your average infantry squad.

It’s more deluded than that Arsenal save Makunix had on the go where Walcott was better than Messi.

Do you reckon these suicidal folks would've not offed themselves by other readily available means if not for guns?

Serious question, no-gotcha response, just curious.

In just the last year or so, two of my co-workers teenage children (14 and 19 respectively) have tried to commit suicide and failed (been found after deliberately overdosing in both cases). While it's not impossible to get a gun here in Australia, the vast majority of families don't have or need them. If these kids had access to them and were truly trying to end their lives it would almost certainly be game over.

Obviously in a lot of cases if people want to die they'll find a way. But there's not much coming back from a bullet to the brain.

Jimmy Floyd

The main question for Americans has to be why every other western democracy has strict gun control and they do not. I know they're indoctrinated about FREEDOM (whereas we are merely indoctrinated to queue at bus stops) but that alone is not an explanation.

I disagree, I think it's a perfectly acceptable argument, and the figures back it up. Harder access to guns results in less suicide by guns, and less successful suicide attempts...

That’s my point though. It’s not always as simple as a ‘second chance’ after a failed attempt via drugs, suffocation, etc there is often life changing affects from the attempt.

So very true. Paul Ryan is going to be so very concerned while he wholeheartedly supports Roy Moore.

Sink the administration how? They currently can't get any policy done anyway. Impeachment is a political question decided by the Speaker of the House. How do either Ryan or McConnel explain that to a base that is currently selecting Gubernatorial and Congressional candidates who are arguably more lawless andnof worse character than Trump?

This is just going to give us on the left our typical reason to not wait in line one day every two years. I 'd much rather fight an election on healthcare and taxes.

As part of their attempt to get their ridiculously large tax cuts for rich people through, the Republican party just released a report that classified people earning $450,000 per year as "low to middle income".

You just have to be awed by the cynicism.

You know I'm a big Rand () fan, but then a few days ago he came up with this:

So now I can only think that his neighbor was some 'snowflake' who was worried about losing his National Endowment for the Humanities grant and decided to have a go. Or maybe it was the shrimp treadmill lad. In any case, lol.

It was a running dispute caused by Rand Paul ignoring land ownership rights (it's claimed he was growing his Pumpkins on the neighbours land) which for a libertarian is pretty funny.

You've clearly never dealt with HOA politics before. If you had, broken ribs over landscaping disputes sounds completely believable. Especially since Rand was clearly the guy out there shouting "Trash collection is theft." Isreal and Palestine are not nearly as contentious.

Rule #1 to survival in American suburbs:

Neighbors with no public opinion about HOA's are non-lunatics. Neighbors with utterly fatalistic and generic complaints about HOA's are likely sound but could become lunatics. If they get specifc or non-fatalistic- avoid. Everyone else is psychotic.

Donald Trumps habit of saying the loud part quiet and absolutely screaming the quiet part seems to be catching on.

As yet another piece of Republican policy comes off the train tracks, two Republican Senators have come out and said 'We need to get tax reform done or our donors will stop speaking to us'.

I mean really, you're not supposed to tell people you're being bribed.

Donald Trump 11/4 George Clooney 35/1 Vincent Viola 66/1
Oprah Winfrey 16/1 John Kasich 40/1 Ben Shapiro 80/1
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson 16/1 Julian Castro 40/1 Leonardo DiCaprio 80/1
