It's all very well Macron lolling at America now, but what about in four years when Michelle Obama is President (Demi Moore VP) and everyone wanks over them again?

Military power is the only arena that the US US still dominant in. Economically and diplomatically they are now in serious decline.

Unfortunately this is why we see them throwing their weight around and starting wars. They're just playing to their strenghts.

David Dimbleby chairs a special edition from York, as Prime Minister Theresa May and Opposition Leader Jeremy Corbyn are each quizzed on their policies. The two politicians will not debate each other directly, but will instead field questions from audience members on a consecutive basis

Should be decent. Probably the ideal format.

Lewis

The entire developed world is in 'relative decline'. It's pretty irrelevant. Particularly since China is still decades away from having comparable wealth, rather than just loads of foreign currencies burning a hole in their pocket.

Pepe
02-06-2017, 07:50 PM
What is the issue if they have comparable wealth anyway?

Outside of the last sentence this is identical to Trump's analysis of the US.

Lewis
02-06-2017, 08:25 PM
What is the issue if they have comparable wealth anyway?

Because then they are an actual rival (for the people that care about that, like the 'trade on their terms' people). Their economic strength is still somewhat precarious so long as they're just churning out shit for other people to buy.

Pepe
02-06-2017, 08:32 PM

I don't suppose it does.

Lewis
02-06-2017, 09:22 PM
Presumably ties are so cheap to make that the majority of their value as Trump ties is down to the Trump branding. So you're giving money to China so that they can make even more money for America. That's like meta-winning.

http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/trump-pulls-out-of-climate-deal-western-rift-deepens-a-1150486.html

German press pulls no punches.

Surrounded by sycophants in the Rose Garden at the White House, he didn't just proclaim his withdrawal from the climate agreement, he sowed the seeds of international conflict. His speech was a break from centuries of Enlightenment and rationality. The president presented his political statement as a nationalist manifesto of the most imbecilic variety. It couldn't have been any worse.

Pepe
05-06-2017, 11:36 AM
And here lies the issue with such agreements:

Yet international agreement on the Paris accord was only possible because it contains no punitive tools at all. The only thing signatories must do is report every five years how much progress they have made toward achieving their self-identified climate protection measures.

Therein lies the absurdity of Trump's histrionics. Nothing would have been easier for the U.S. than to take part pro forma in United Nations climate-related negotiations while completely ignoring climate protection measures at home -- which Trump has been doing anyway since his election.

So it is all about him daring to challenge Merkel, Trudeau, and Macron (and Pepsi and Exxon and...) Not that I think that not giving a fuck about the environment is ok, but the agreement is a bit of a sham. The Germans are pissed of because the only thing they want is that everyone falls in line with what they say.

Pepe
05-06-2017, 11:40 AM
The Germans would do well to stop flexing their influence muscles and begin hitting the targets they promised they would in their beloved agreement.

Sessions has offered his resignation.

There can't ever have been a more chaotic regime at the helm of a civilised country.

Us Dem's have forgotten what the first year of Clinton looked like. Different issues but I wouldn't be surprised if Gallup polls didn't have Clinton and Trump at similar popularity levels. Difference being that his people could get replaced by boring insiders in a way that doesn't seem possible for Trump.

It is amazing that people think Comey's testimony is nothing. Impeachment is primarily a political question so nothing is going to happen as long as Ryan is the congressional majority leader. But it is no longer news reports; the former head of the FBI, who beat an admin before, under oath testified both that the President is a liar and that all the building blocks exist to start a criminal case for obstruction.

The Donald is actually spot on regarding NATO. These countries refuse to pay their way, criticise the Americans for their domestic audience, and continue to assume that if something happens they can trigger Article 50 and the Americans will come rushing in with tomahawks and aircraft carriers.

It's all fair and well sheltering under the American military and spending the money on something else, but you can't then be aghast when you're called out on it in public.

I don't want to claim any huge expertise, but I read quite a bit at the time and it certainly seemed that he was acting entirely within the powers of the presidency. People (Democrats) may not have liked it, but it's not as if he made a secret of it on the campaign trail either.

It's obviously a different question whether the range of powers concentrated in one office / one individual is reasonable, but that's for another day.

John Arne

Yes. It's been done many times previously, including by the Obama administration in Iraq in 2013. Never with this breath true, but the principal is nothing new.

Obama stopped refugee processing, whilst Trump is attempting to stop all citizens from those countries from entering the US. They are very different, and you know that.

This is one thing that I will never understand, and both sides do it - the obvious misdirection and lack of policy ownership. Anyone with half a brain can read about this and realise that the two cases are completely different - yet people try and claim that this is just an extension to Obama's policy. Take responsibility of it - just say "we want to ban all people from these countries, because we are scared of what they might do" (I understand why they don't do that, do its no less frustrating).

Mert On this specific policy - where has the 90 days come from? Given that 90 days has now lapsed since the original executive order was passed without incident - is there a legitimate argument to be made that it's not needed. The proof after all, is in the pudding. Would you want the 90 extended to a year, 5 years etc.?

The POTUS account is an official arm of the communications of the Executive Branch, meaning that video as well as a description of it will have to go into the National Archives. A historian is going to run across that in 100 years and wonder what went on.

Being weaker and less intelligent than his brothers, Fredo has little power or status within the Corleone crime family (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corleone_family). The infant Fredo had pneumonia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneumonia). In the novel, Fredo's primary weakness is his womanizing, a habit he develops after moving to Las Vegas and which earns his father's disfavor. In the films, Fredo's feelings of personal inadequacy and his inability to act effectively on his own behalf are character flaws leading to greater consequences.

Bernie Sanders’ public disclosures show that his net worth is between $194,026 and $741,030, Politico reported. The news site says that Bernie’s assets are listed in his wife, Jane’s, name, and include investment funds.

However, Politico said Sanders also listed $25,002-$65,000 in credit card debt.

Some media sources use the higher figure when they report Bernie’s net worth at $700,000. He is far poorer than most in Congress; the median net worth in 2013 was $1 million for those serving in Congress. In the Senate, the median income was $2.8 million. Sanders also has a lower net worth than other presidential candidates.

But the right's guilty of it too. Can you not just accept that those in the political circles have the bread to buy extra shit?

The right are far more comfortable with the idea that you can, and should, earn more money than other people if you're good at something and should be free to spend it as you wish without criticism.

I think we can all agree that Sanders is the real problem at the moment, rather than a blinkered attempt to divert attention from the fact that the President of the US is an insane plutocrat leading a party of borderline fascists.

Because people aren't capable of two strands of argument on here at the same time.

The fact remains he won't be impeached, because the Republicans in the Senate will never vote it through. So much as the Democrats would love it, it's a non-starter. They need to start getting ready for 2020 instead of trying to re-fight 2016.

Hypocrisy like the republican Senate wanting to take subsidized medicine away from everyone. Except themselves. But those socialists!

You might have noticed there's a small healthcare bill being fought over in the Senate at the moment.

You won't find me defending the Republicans on healthcare.

You're forgetting that democracy is something that happens every four years. You're not allowed an opinion in between times.

I don't think he'll be impeached either. He probably wins 2020 too, the Democrats haven't shown any hint of pulling their heads out of their asses.

What should The Democrats be doing, political strategist who is always right, GS?

I think the normies will lose and they'll come out for Single Payer, whether they do it before 2018 is the key.

Strong retort. I'm off to 'Get Ready' for an election in 3 years when the actual election that matters is next year.

Bernie would win in 2020, I tell you. And I wouldn't it past him to give it a run either.

Do you genuinely believe that? That's just straight delusion if you are serious.

This is weak sauce. Bernie is the man.

Also, on Russia, I continue to be of the view that there's fuck all to it other than probably a bit of stupidity on behalf of the Trump campaign. The Democrats and the media aligned with them are getting far too much of a free pass for pushing it when there's much more serious stuff going on. Fake News indeed.

This. They are fucking idiots and liars though, the extent to which is honestly disappointing.

The "serious stuff" is the Paul Ryan agenda to destroy any part of the government that works for the benefit of the people of the country, you know.
