End of 2015. Time for the awards.

Let's choose the best of 2015

*cue hello of Adele*

My nominations are:

Brooklyn 99 season 2
Absolutely genius. Fun all over and took the throne left by family guy in comedy by a mile. But is it enough to be the best TV show in general?

Game of thrones season 5( I think or similar)

Leftovers season (?)
Didn't see yet but by the comments I read seems to be very good.

Gotham season 2
I only watched 4 episodes but I am convinced.

Originals
My own choice, I may be partial because I love vampires and the main actor is simply brilliant

Fargo ( current season)
My bff demanded this to be nominated.

Must be 10 choices that will be reduced to 5 later. I promise to update this commentary.

10 to 5 has to be decided by the 24th 23:59

And the final voting ends on the 31 by mid night UK time.

OHHHH and has to be a show with a audience bigger then 10 guys, if ya know what I mean...

I thought it would be best new show of 2015 and not a show that aired in 2015.

Might as well close this now as Game of Thrones will walk it.

Season five of Game of Thrones wasn't even top ten for this year.

No spoilers in this thread, thanks. There's no need to discuss plot when we're doing nothing more than naming things that were good. A spoiler warning is useless if it's non-specific, Saint, as the one in the title of this thread was. Use spoiler tags if you need to.

I'm still enjoying Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It's consistently very funny, and it just goes from strength to strength with the characters. I was bracing for a third season slump, but it hasn't eventuated. The second season still edges it, but the current season has been very good.

However, for mine, the best show on television at the moment is Bob's Burgers. Intelligent and heart-warming. Not always as riotously funny as Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but the characters in Bob's Burgers are second-to-none - from the main family, all the way down to throwaway extras (although nobody ever really gets thrown away in that show - just put into storage until they're needed again). It's probably got the tightest scriptwriters in television, as well.

Is anybody else still watching Homeland? The last few episodes have been great, though it took far too long to get going.

The Leftovers and Fargo were comfortably the two best drama series I've watched this year. Both idiosyncratic and strange, but in completely different ways. The former has managed to introduce a bit of whimsy after being unrelentingly dark in the first season, but it's still been probably the darkest thing on TV. The latter has a far more comedic tone but it's serious when it should be and I love all the little nods to both the film and the previous season that they put in, almost as asides most of the time.

Parks and Recreation was still the best comedy to air this year, even though it was done by about halfway through February. Once that was gone it left Review as the best comedy still producing episodes.

I liked homeland first season but this one is trying too much. The all " we are not propaganda for Israel even though we clearly are" is becoming too obvious and destroying the plot. I would nominate for one of the biggest disappointments 2015.

For sure - this season has been fairly ALL MUSLIMS ARE SHITEHAWKS, which has definitely been a pit awkward to watch.

A couple of really good ones that no one else has mentioned (I don't think anyone else watches them):

Fresh off the Boat
You're the Worst

I'd have said this season of Homeland has been the best since the first.

I think I've largely managed to accidentally avoid lots of the 'big' series, so I'll chuck in a couple of outliers that were good:

Justified season 6: Recovered from a dodgy season 5 to go out on a real high. Ties up pretty much everything satisfyingly. Phonics, come in here and back me up.

Penny Dreadful season 2: Some of the best dialogue and actors on TV and a healthy improvement on season 1. Still a bit crap at resolving plotlines, but it even made Billie Piper good.

Wolf Hall: Massively surpassed my expectations.

I thought Game of Thrones, Stannis and the Zulu style bit aside, was treading water a bit this season. I'm not sure it should be troubling a top 10 list.

Homeland has been a good watch, especially the last few episodes. Saul.

Blacklist has been amazing lately. In my opinion deserves also a nomination if for James spader awesomeness only.

A bit surprised not seeing:

Wayward pines
Shield
The walking dead
Ray Donovan
Empire ( not seen by me yet but amazing reviews)
And mostly da Vinci demons.

Hugely disappointed with How to get away with murder. Seems like they are preparing a 3season and ditching this season.

The Walking Dead can kill everyone off for all I care.

Dark Soldier

The only TV shows I've watched this year are Mr Robot, Bloodline and Better Call Saul, so those.

Reg

Surprised people are still watching Homeland, it seemed to get more ridiculous by the episode after the first season.

Better Call Saul
Kimmy Schmidt
Rita
The Apprentice
And probably Jessica Jones once I finish it.

Second season of Bojack Horseman was this year, wasn't it? That.

Forgot about Unbreakable Kimmy Scmidt as well. It was great.

Has to be Narcos. So well written.

Rick and Morty too.

Lewis

Emmerdale has had a very good year.

Reg
20-12-2015, 03:13 PM
Ah, Narcos! That can take Rita's place, which was just goodish really.

Angelsaint
20-12-2015, 03:18 PM
Definitely not narcos. The infinite narrative killed the show. Doesn't help when Escobar speaks Brazilian sometimes instead of Spanish and also the Brazilian accent from Escobar when he speaks Spanish. So... No. Good show to watch if you have loads of time or you are John. Not picking on you or maybe I am but it's only jealousy.

John
20-12-2015, 03:20 PM
Based on your list upthread you appear to watch far more than I do, so no need to be jealous.

I am interested to know at what points in Narcos the lead character spoke 'Brazilian', though.

Reg
20-12-2015, 03:22 PM
The narration wasn't great but the show definitely had enough quality for it not to matter too much.

mugbull
20-12-2015, 03:28 PM
I thought the narrative was necessary given that Narcos was just as much a documentary as it was a TV drama.

John

I haven't watched Rick and Morty but it's from the same bloke as Community so I'll give it a look at some point. I have noticed that it's primarily perverts who praise it though.

From the top of my head, when they are in the jungle with the Brazilian prostitutes for once but there are other examples.

Leftovers season 2 had all the hallmarks of something abhorrent early on, but turned out to be excellent.
London Spy was a surprise. I expected something completely different, but was delighted by what I got.
Better Call Saul better than Breaking Bad so far.
The Last Kingdom hammy in places, but a very welcome series.
Bloodlines Superb stuff. Deserves more recognition. Several incredible performances.
Fortitude A bit a plodder at times, but I'm looking forward to season 2

Need to go back to True Detective after deciding this season did not suit a piecemeal approach.

It's Master of None. That nobody has mentioned it yet suggests more of you need to watch it.

I haven't watched the latest series, but Homeland is a disgrace, as I've pointed out at length elsewhere.

I don't watch much television. The only series I can say I watched this year was Peep Show, which was good.

Breaking bad trod water more than Jesus on a regular basis. It was a good concept that at times was brilliantly executed but the characterisation was poor and it lost sight of what made it good on more than one occasion.

Better Call Saul was consistently excellent.

Daredevil and Jessica Jones for me.

Absolutely shameful the The Americans hasn't been mentioned yet. S3 was one of the best seasons of televisions I've ever seen.

This season of Homeland was a narrative trainwreck, and GoT did some really shitty things. Master of None was great, as was Jessica Jones.

mugbull
22-12-2015, 06:32 PM
Honestly, you can't call Rick and Morty shit. If it's not your type of humor then fine, but the show is so well done and so well written that it's just simply not shit.

Seems to be a consensus. The nominations will come soon. Some changes to the first commentary. The voting will end middle of January
Due to popular demand, common sense and because I am not applying for work at Mossad, homeland is definitely not in the nominations.

Rick and morty is.

If it wasn't the best season of TV this year, it was definitely one of the all time great final episodes.
