View Full Version : Sleep Paralysis

This morning, I 'woke up' hallucinating in a vague sense that an intruder had climbed through my bedroom window and was standing on the ledge. I tried to either get up and confront it, or speak out but could do neither through total paralysis. I'd say this went on for a minute, maybe less, before my alarm went off and everything was normal again.
I've heard of this happening to people, but how common is it, has it happened to you and do I need to turn myself in to the authorities because of it?

My brother had it a few times and so did a friend at uni.
Whilst my brother just complained about vampires standing on him trying to bite his neck, my uni friend's experience was much worse.
She woke up believing that a gang of guys were in her room, one pinned her down whilst another crawled on top of her then they started to rape her. Waking up, thinking that that is actually happening would definitely be traumatising.
I've never had it and certainly never want it. It is meant to be linked to stress though.

Never had Sleep Paralysis but I have had a couple of Night Terrors, which terrified Miss Byron when it happened, as according to her I just bolted upright and screamed as if I'd been stabbed.

I used to get this quite a lot. It's not much fun, but, at the same time, you get used to it, to an extent. I used to be able to identify when it was about to happen to me (presumably whilst asleep in some capacity) and sort of fight it (force myself awake).

All the time, it hasn't been any real trouble since I was in single figures - took a few times but I quickly realised it wasn't real and whilst mad to look at knew that I wouldn't be harmed; although it is odd hallucinating everything from drooling aliens to shadowy goop invading the place whilst your eyes are open.
I think the most mad one was when a Xenomorph was sitting on my chest talking away to me whilst stroking its chin.
I know quite a number of people who have it, almost always it's pretty terrifying for them. That example above about a girl thinking she was being raped is, well, that would truly be mental. Things like this put stories of abduction etc. into a much sharper relief.

Yea pretty much the same as Niko, I used to get it a lot to the point where I got used to it. Not had it in quite a while though. It is fucking horrible.

I've woken up and was "paralyzed" in the sense I couldn't fucking move a limb, to which absolute panic ensued every time. This has happened maybe 3 or 4 times in total, though, and every time I think it lasts about 10 seconds at most (it's probably less in reality).
I've never had the hallucinations though. Although I've read somewhere it's quite common. Apparently oftentimes when people attempt to enter a "lucid dreaming" state (someone posted on it here ages ago I think) - with the intention presumably of controlling their own dreams to shag a load of bitches - the end up in sleep paralysis instead in some sort of nightmarish state (like Jim and Charlies friend above).

My 'hallucination' was nothing more than the sense of a shadowy, silhouetty figure climbing through the window and then standing on the ledge. Wouldn't even say it was frightening particularly, as I think deep down I knew it wasn't real. Oh well, at least it sounds like I don't need committing.

I used to get it quite a lot, although haven't had any for ages.
In your case though Jimmy, it's definitely some kind of Korean mind control technique.

I've had this quite a few times, the first was one of the worst experiences of my life.
Woke up, pinned to my bed, remote control started hovering on its own, to the point that I was convinced ghosts were real, since I was certain I was awake. Then I slowly started floating in the air, then pinned up against the wall, like something was pushing my shoulders and everything in my room started flying at me at pace. Then everything, myself included, fell straight to the ground. At this point I actually did fully wake up, on the floor, but too scared to move as I really was utterly convinced it was all real. After about half an hour of just hiding on the floor, I left the house and went to a friends house pretty much in tears.
I reckon sleep paralysis hallucinations could be behind a number of the stories you hear about people being 'visited'.
That example above about a girl thinking she was being raped is, well, that would truly be mental.Surely that depends on what she wears in bed? Maybe she brought it on herself.

I used to get it at as a child. Never had it since was absolutely brutal. So much so I vividly remember them 15-20 years on.
Wow, I had no idea this was so common. Glad to say I've never experienced anything like it before, however. Sama's in particular sounds terrifying. :serious:
I've had it a couple of times. It seems to happen if my sleep pattern has been disturbed, particularly if I'm not getting much sleep.
I don't think either of mine were visual hallucinations. One of them was basically just the sound of alarm clocks and bells getting louder and louder like the bit at the end of A Day in the Life while I couldn't move.
The other time was just a general sense of something unpleasant being in the room (other than me, obviously).

Mine was also intruder related. I'd be frozen in my bed, fully aware of everything and the impending sense of doom got greater and greater and there was fuck all I could do about it. It seemed to be just before waking as well.

Put me on the list. Think I've mentioned it before on here, but involved rolling over in bed and finding what I'm gonna describe as Ghost Witch Face screaming at me, constantly, for ages. Fully woke up and couldn't move for a while. Tried calling out, but couldn't do that either.
Had one other which involved someone talking (well, telling me to fuck off) with no one in the room. It's a proper head fuck.
I've had it a few times, although only when I've been sleeping on my back which is pretty rare these days. A couple of times recently I've woken up with the sort of hallucinations - if that's what you'd call them - that usually accompany this, but without the inability to move. The other night I apparently shot bolt upright shouting "No, no, no, no, no!" with my arm in front of me, and explained to my girlfriend that there was a spike about to fall from the roof, only to fall asleep again. My only vague memory is of her laughing at me.

Yeah had it a few times. Used to be some fucked up shadow demon cunt with a stupid top hat that did it all the time to me when I was younger. He didn't do anything it was just basically him in the room.
It happened recently though when I was paralysed and a guy walked in the room and started stabbing me. My girlfriend said I was like screaming but it was like muffled which was weird as Mr Stabby had his hand over my mouth. Not that I believe in any thing like ghosts but when it happens it can be pretty brutal/scary.
Don't get sleep paralysis anymore, used to have it when I was a kid. My room was right next to the stairs going down and I used to sleep with my door open, dreamt the one night that something was popping it's head around and yelling at me, couldn't do anything, scared the shit out of me and never used to sleep with my door open again, still don't to this day.
I do kick out and twitch a lot in my sleep, much to my girlfriends annoyance.
Only truly freaky thing was on the odd occasion waking up to a pool of blood where I'd had a nose bleed. One wakeup it looks like I'd sneezed whilst having one, my wall/lamp and desk looked like a murder scene with blood all splattered over the place :D.

I've not had it in ages, but my worst episode was one night where I would slip into it every time I fell asleep. Was pretty shit. It was mostly connected to MDMA use for me, I'd get it like clockwork within a couple of nights of indulging.
MDMA always gives me the most terrible nightmares for a about a week after using. This kind of shit along with night terrors .

I think that the construct of how we perceive doors is probably key to this, and I imagine why it is uncomfortable for the majority of us to sleep with an open door (or with our heads pointed towards a door), including cupboards.
We naturally are drawn towards doors, so as we are falling asleep or waking up the presence of the door itself grows.
I do kick out and twitch a lot in my sleep, much to my girlfriends annoyance.
That's a great defence, I'll have to remember that.

This sounds scary as fuck, it's a good thing I've never slept before.
I get it now and then, but unlike James there doesn't seem to be any logic to when it will strike so it's always a horrible surprise. The worst I've ever had was someone kneeling on my chest and covering my mouth, just slowly suffocating me with the pressure on my chest.
I doubt it would have fallen far with the size of your melon almost touching it.

That seems to be the most common experience, aside from being floated/lifted by said person/presence.

I don't get the 'intruder' thing but I occasionally feel completely aware but unable to move or open my eyes. I'm not sure if I imagine it entirely or not, I always feel like I'm trying my hardest to move/roll over or open my eyes, slowly becoming more able but when I eventually 'wake up' I'm in nothing like the position I'd expect.

It's not sleep paralyses if you're fucking falling dip shit. It's when you're basically awake and something is in your room and your paralysed. The hint is in the name.
What you had Shindig is something called - a nightmare.

No, its sleep paralysis. I fall in the dream, wake up and can't move. Then I shut my eyes and continue to fall. Once I hit solid ground, I wake up again and am able to move. So go home to your mother and suck her fat cock.

I remember the exact details of the dream I was having immediately before the paralysis. I was at the World Cup draw, I think hosted in England, and they were drawing group A. The four teams were Oldham, Burton, Sheffield Wednesday and Dr Dre, which was a team of fat rappers who then all came on stage. Then I 'woke up' into the paralysis thing.
So I'm not going to read too much into that.

On a completely unrelated note, I had a terrifying dream last night where a Nigel Pearson-led Leicester were heading for the title and, in a post-match interview, Nige donned a Fabrizio Ravanelli Boro' shirt. He also had monstrous red face and started singing 'something'.
I've never been so confused.

70% of the people on this forum are boring asocial pussies, so generally if theres a groupthink happening its probably a shitty groupthink. That smiley is a solid 8/10 and if it weren't for the startling limitations of modern iphone technology i'd have pasted it onto the end of this post like 150 times.
