All schools in the vast Los Angeles Unified School District have been ordered closed due to a threat.

School district spokeswoman Ellen Morgan announced the closure on Tuesday but released no further details.

At a press conference, school superintendent Ramon Cortines said that the threat was “not to one school, two school or three schools” but to “many schools” and “at school students” generally. He declined to describe the nature of the threat.

He said he had asked staffers at schools to look for “anything that is out of order” but “not to touch anything, not to do anything” before contacting authorities – suggesting that he and school officials fear a bomb threat.

Steve Zipperman, chief of the Los Angeles school police department, said the threat was delivered as an “electronic” message, and that the decision to close schools was made “in an abundance of caution”.

Electronic warning? Rules out ISIS, I would have thought. Just some kids messing about probably.

98% it'll be a kid with a test phoning in a swat team over a proxy. Threatening all the schools so they can't target him is a smart move.

They should have just told everyone to bring their guns to school.

It's probably ridiculously easy to provoke something of this sort.

Why's that?

They'd rather kill the kids than just get them all a day off school?

That was my first thought, it just almost seemed like he was taking issue with an "electronic warning" specifically. Although they've warned of attacks before haven't they? Or at least, "inspired by ISIS" types have.

This. The "real" ISIS don't appear to be in the habit of giving out warnings.

Swatting, or whatever it's called, really is up there in the league of shameful crimes.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — New York City schools were among many districts around the country to receive an email terror threat Tuesday, but police have determined it not to be credible and are investigating it as a hoax, city officials said.

All schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District were ordered closed Tuesday due to the threat. NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton (http://newyork.cbslocal.com/tag/bill-bratton/)said the email received in New York was similar to the one received in Los Angeles.
“We do believe, a preliminary investigation, that this is in fact a hoax and we will investigate it as such,” Bratton said.He added that the school system in Los Angeles shut down schools without consulting with the Los Angeles Police Department. Bratton called the move a “significant overreaction.”

This story gets better and better though
