I didn't think it was worth a separate album/single thread so let's just keep it in here. Given the vast ocean that is music in 2015 there's little point in doing a summary. Why don't we just post our standout gig/moment/song/album instead?

I started listening to Radio 6 in late April, because the ads and tiresome repetitiveness of Absolute was getting on my tits. Keaveny first, then R&M, then Lauren Lavergne. Soon it was the only station I listened to. It was a momentous occasion. Having not listened to any new music really since the mid-00s and only listening to older stuff I'd absolutely lost faith in discovering any new music worth listening to. Little did I know it was a vibrant and buzzing scene, you just had to look in the right places. I heard some absolutely fantastic music, but it was elevated to a whole new level when I watched the Mercury Awards. 6 Music had been doing bits on the nominees but as I only listen in the car I missed some. I knew about Riosion Murphy, Slaves, Aphex Twin, Gaz Combes, C Duncan but I'd absolutely never heard of the man that basically changed everything for me: Benjamin Clementine.

There was a brief introductory piece on each artist nominated which I thought nothing of. There was a couple of MEH performances from Slaves and Eska and then Bennie stepped on stage. Instantly he caught my eye. His hair, his barefeet. His clothing. Hang on a minute, what's this all about? Then he played Cornerstone. Even with that piano introduction I was utterly mesmerised and hooked. I've never seen or heard anything like it. I can only imagine what those who were lucky enough to see him perform on Jools Holland got out of it. Bastards.

It was so open. So honest. So emotive. A journey right through his soul. I felt myself falling in to his life, his experiences, reliving them through this wonderful melody. Holy shit. Holy fucking shit I said to the wife. This changes everything. He must win. He needs to win. He did indeed win. I immediately purchased his album (At Least For Now) and read through each lyric to each song. It opened them up even more. It was like a diary, but a very clever one. A subtle one. It wasn't breathtakingly obvious and dull like Adele. Here was a man who had faced real hardship and found solace in the written word. Who'd abandoned the shackles of disaffected British youth and sought adventure in central Paris. A man who had once walked 10 hours to Rotterdam because he had no money for a train ticket and nobody would stop for him to hitchhike. He arrived with bleeding feet and still they didn't let him play.

I have never heard anything so beautiful and sincere and I urge you all to listen to it. He is only 27 and this is his first album. With the maturity he's managed to inject in to this I honestly cannot wait to hear what he has for us next. Wow.

2015 was the year of Tchami, the man who revolutionized my ears and re-wired my brain. He's truly spectacular

I literally know zero about music this year. I'd love to have a clue some of the decent house tunes about to put them onto my phone.

Just listened to some Tchami, it's a bit samey samey isn't it? Not saying it isn't good like.

I had a listen to that Benjamin Clementine when you mentioned him before. His voice was immediately grating, like a sort of off key Antony Hegarty, but about three songs in that stopped being a real problem. He's alright, but his lyrics could use some serious work.

I can understand that. Maybe it was also the visual element that hooked me in, bearing in mind that is the first time I heard/saw him. It was so passionate and sincere.

I've never heard of Hegarty but the Guardian reviews mention him as a comparison. Remember he is only 27.

Antony Hegarty is the bloke from Antony and the Johnsons.

Fucking hell I've just watched a video (I've never listened to them either) and Antony is female?! Could have fooled me. :D

Justin Bieber has donned it, and that Nick Jonas song from about eight months ago was class.

Nah man. I mean i could say the same thing about singer-songwriters. Any artist who's been on the scene for 24 months max is going to sound a bit samey, especially someone who does deep house. I think his songs have a consistent diversity about them that most house producers don't really try for

Apart from house I think the rise of Vince Staples has been glorious

I only listened to Afterlife and Keep on Pushing, they did sound exactly the same to me. :(

Oh I fuck with Benjamin Clementine. Sounds like Bob Dylan. This is really great.

Shout outs to Ghost Poet, Loyle Carner and Kate Tempest too. I'd say GP is a superb artist, in fact.

I got into Primus this year, so they're my band of 2015.

Fair enough mate. This thread isn't restricted to 2015 releases, its what did 2015 mean for you in terms of music.

Was trying to decide the other day who has had the most % increase in bank balance between December 31st 2014 and now, out of Fetty Wap and The Weeknd.

The latter already had success prior to this year so already had a few mil in there, but my god it will have skyrocketed over the last 12 months.

As for Fetty Wap, he probably started the year without much more money than Yevrah, and now he's undoubtedly a multi-millionaire.

Lucky bastards.

Joanna Newsom just wins for me. Divers probably one of my top 3 albums ever. I'm a huge fanboy so i find it quite hard to judge objectively, but I've not listened to very little else in the last two months.

Nils Frahm deserves a mention for his absolutely stunning live show as well.

Jhene Aiko all through the year. When I did that Spotify "your year in music" thing she ended up top in like every category. Second to her was a whole lot of Drake.

Apart from that Lewis has it right, Beibz has been donning it recently really.

For anyone who uses Spotify, search "Spotify Year In Music" and they give you a nice overview of your most listened artists, tracks, genres etc.

I didn't really keep up with new releases this year, but my favourite new album was Kendrick's. I've found that apart from King Kunta, I only properly enjoy the others when listening to the album to all the way through.

Listened to a lot of my usual favourite artists, and a lot of Motown, hip-hop, and moody rock. In the last couple months I've really enjoyed moody bands like Spraynard and Moose Blood.

Most played album I think was The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein by Parliament.

Like John I struggled to get past Clementine's voice the first time I listened to him. At times it sounds like somebody on the wind up. I'll give him another go given the praise here, but probably not before I fire through some of Raoul's list.

Carrie & Lowell is definitely my album of the year so far but to be honest I haven't listened to as much new stuff as I normally would.

I liked him a lot (watched the Jools Holland performance after reading this thread) but not enough to provoke Magic's emotions. The bare feet is a great gimmick though.

Divers and To Pimp a Butterfly defined the year. Everything else sort of pales in comparison.

Is rock and roll dead?

I haven't been as in touch with it as previous years, but Robosonic's set from Fusion Festival is well worth getting. It should be on their Soundcloud.

Bieber's only nailed it because Skrillex produced all the good songs on that album. Bieber hasn't evolved in a spectacular way, he just has the right people around him now.

But yes, it's a pretty sick album.

Father John Misty - I Love You, Honeybear

I was rather enjoying this, then 'Bored in the USA' came on and there's a fucking laugh track. What the Dickens is he playing at?
