My mate has a rescue staffy and an autistic daughter he sees three nights a week, and said the dog was just immediately on board the first time he met the kid. No trying to protect his territory, no growling or whatever, just had a bit of a sniff then started standing guard outside the child's bedroom from then on. Some dogs have the right temperament, some don't, and while trying to pull the dog's ears off the way a child will seems preparatory it won't give you much of an idea how she'll react to a kid, because her owner flicking her nose then offering up a biscuit is a bit different from some interloper trying to pull her fur out and screaming the place down. Still, a good idea either way, it can't hurt to at least get the dog used to being pestered.

I pretty much am. I shovelled my way through about 5g on Hogmanay but that’s it for ages and even then I didn’t have any dark days that followed.
