Watched Black Widow tonight.

I really enjoyed it, especially David Harbour's character.

Also, Winstone really needs to work on his Russian accent. Failing that he should have just kept one accent going throughout the film, he seemed to jump between about 30.

Me and the boys watched the Kickboxer sequel with Mike Tyson and Ronaldinho yesterday. Truly one of the worst films I've ever seen. 2 hours long and I couldn't name you a character and I'm not sure why/when anyone was in/out of prison. I was saying to one of my friends that it feels like a movie made by someone who has never seen a movie but have been explained the basic concept of one.

This outrageously bad stunt scene was the best part: https://streamable.com/2ta1u1

I watched The Dead Don't Die last night. No idea what the point of it was.

I've said here before that I'm a bit of a sucker for even a shit zombie film but this was just boring, and trying to be weird without being genuinely odd or funny enough to pull it off. Why they bothered getting that cast in for it I don't know.

Yeah even as a big Bill Murray fan, The Dead Don't Die feels like something Jim Jarmush scribbled on a napkin and then made without actually fleshing out. Makes me even more wary he is making Ghost Dog 2 next.

Watched Fear Street:1994 on Netflix last night. It was a strange affair, the intro was good. Directly after the intro was a bit wobbly, trying to cram as many 90s songs as possible into a short sequence was very distracting but once it got a bit of time to breathe it was a lot better. Of course it's a horror story adapted from a Goosebumps book with ultra gore thrown in and trying to pay homage to a lot of other horror films at the same time: not everything will work. Interested to see how the next two parts go and then review the series as a whole.

Lofty
21-07-2021, 04:34 PM
Really? I felt it was a big step down from Hereditary and there was some questionable villifying of a certain character for me. Maybe it was Ari Aster's intention, I know whenever it is mentioned on the horror facebook groups I am in it usually degenerates into a shit show and gets deleted :D

What are the plot holes?

If they stopped the program when Adelaide was a kid, why are there clones of kids? At the end, how does Red get to the beach ahead of them? Does she know how to drive? How did Red contact all the tethered at all the other facilities all over the US/World? Why did the government build a secret facility under a fun fair and not in the desert like usual? Why did they need 300 million clones? Why didn't they kill the clones or seal the facilities when they abandoned the experiment? Why didn't Adelaide just leave the facility after she was kidnapped by Red?

Bam Margera is [surprisingly, but thankfully] still alive but they wouldn’t let him on Jackass 4 because he wouldn’t agree to their terms, which was basically not drink or do any drugs. Yeah, I was probably helped by not expecting much from it. It’s still not on the level of the best Marvel films, but it’s closer than the other DC efforts.

I just watched an odd one: Teen Titans Go! Watch Space Jam and it was basically exactly that. Starts off like an episode of Teen Titans Go! but the aliens from Space Jam come to visit them. Cyborg recognises them but quickly realised the rest of them haven’t seen Space Jam, so they all go and watch it. And then it’s literally just [the original] Space Jam with the Teen Titans occasionally commenting on what’s going on.

It was great!

Dinner in America is my favourite film of the year so far, just ahead of Summer of Soul and Another Round.

Demonic is absolute fucking shit. Blomkamp has always been awful but this just escalates to a new level. Do you find glitches scary? Well oh boy you're in for a treat.

No Sudden Move is a delightful throwback to 70s and 80s style crime dramas.

Profile is a tech-drama about a journalist posing as a terrorist sympathiser, and slowly starts falling for a recruiters charms. Despite her being portrayed as the thickest cunt ever, its decent.

My Heart Can't Beat Unless You Tell It To is an ultra low-budget horror-drama about a brother and sister 'caring' for their younger brother who has a mysterious illness. It ain't mysterious, you figure out what it is within the first five minutes, but if you like small productions and atmosphere its worth a crack.

Woodstock 99 - Solid enough documentary on the disaster that was the title event.

Apan aka The Ape - Swedish drama about a man about to tip over into madness. The lead is fantastic, ultra morbid. My kinda shit, not for everyone.

Watched something called Focus over the weekend. Never heard of it before and seems like one the studios buried a bit. It's got Will Smith and Margot Robbie in it, so you'd have thought it'd been somewhat well-known but I'd never heard of it. It's good, in the sense that it has Margot Robbie in a bikini a lot, but bad in the sense that the plot is absolute bobbins. First act is fine (Smith teaching her how to be a conman) and then it goes sideways with some batshit plot that makes little sense and ignores the majority of the first part. Doesn't even stick to a generic "heist" schtick, which might have redeemed it a bit.

Baby Driver, not sure how I missed this initially as I love Edgar Wright. I think the title and the Spacey stuff put me off. As a spectacle and achievement in film making it is excellent. Plot is a little thin but hardly the point.

The Gentlemen. I haven't kept up with Guy Ritchie's work post Snatch, this was a decent watch however. Fast paced crime caper with excellent dialogue, can't go too wrong if you're a fan of the genre.

Crank. How I missed Crank all these years I don't know, I was aware of it yet had never seen it. Complete madness, Statham is excellent, I think Crank wouldn't have got made in 2021 :D

The reviews on IMDB seem to be focused exclusively on how it was a tirade against the white man, which I personally found to be the only interesting thing in it. No, what killed it for me were two things:

It made no sense. I don't know whether this was because it received a harsh edit to hit that 90 minute sweet spot, but the ending just chucked a load of things at you that were proper nonsense.

It had a stupid amount of the ART world in it, which (to my recollection at least) has never been portrayed in anything other than an incredibly irritating way outside of Lovejoy and that show might only have gotten away with it due to the brilliance of Ian McShane.

Lofty

I heard the race stuff, also heard there wasn't much in the way of scares. The thing that made the original work was it's constant unsettling atmosphere, and the subtlety of the race issue (the history of Cabrini Green, the fact people only take Candyman seriously when a white person complains about him, etc) whereas the reviews for this one sound like his now Black Panther who only kills white people. A bit on the nose.

My Son

Drama/Thriller with James McAvoy and Claire Foy. Their son goes missing - thats about the entire premise. The wonderful thing about this is McAvoy's entire script is improvised. He had no idea where the plot was going, what the motivations were, and he had no lines of dialogue given to him. A rough outline of his character and away he goes, he finds things out as we do. And fucking fuck me is he astonishing in it.

Really, really good film, which even without this 'gimmick' would be a solid and enjoyable thing. I always thought McAvoy was very good but this has elevated him.

I've watched that now and definitely agree. You get a little bit of his character (like the obsession with perfection and how he really made himself a part of that Ferrari team) but it takes huge chunks of time out that really should've been expanded on. No mention of the Monaco parking job and the subsequent, "You know what I am." bit in the press conference. No mention of how he was trying to make comebacks during Massa's time but couldn't sort his neck out. And, as others have said, they seem to give the contributors (James Allen, Ross Brawn) three different titles. Friend, commentator, biographer, teammate, former F1 boss, etc.

I watched two things last night. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is decent. I struggle to see that as the younger version of Vesemir as he's just too sexy and one of the trials they have for the prospective witcher boys is just the dumbest shit imaginable but otherwise I enjoyed it well enough.

Then watched Zombieland: Double Tap. I dunno if it's actually alright or if it's just because I'm a sucker for a zombie film. It's fine and has some good moments though it's pretty unmemorable. Has its best action scene in the middle then ends on a bit of a meh one. I also found it a bit jarring that I've only seen the kid sister in the two Zombieland films so first thing I saw her in she's a skinny 13 year old and in this she's.... somewhat bustier.
