What did you think of Nolan's other work?

Watched my freshly arrived Joker 4K Blu Ray last night and it was stunning  Probably the third of fourth time I have seen it, originally seen in the cinema and it still holds up. Hopefully they never dick about with any sequels.

Has anyone seen The Foot Fist Way?

The guys from Workaholics were talking about it on their This Is Important podcast, how one of them discovered it on a bootleg DVD and said it was the funniest movie he’d ever seen, so he immediately went around to the house where the other 3 were and made them watch it. And then they dissected it and watched it again, straight after. And one of them teaches film editing at university and always shows it to his students.

Like there’s no way it can live up to this hype!

Attempted Infinity War as it was on TV this evening and was completely lost on it as to who most of them were (the whole crew where one of them is basically a tree) and still no idea why Spider-man is in the same films as the avengers. Anyway, I asked before but I can’t remember, which ones can I skip if I go back a bit? I think the first Avengers or Thor was the last one I seen, whichever was later.

I watched Wonder Woman 1984 last night and it was pretty shit. They nailed the first movie but this one was another onto the DC movie shit pile.

Gadot was great, Wiig was ok and that's about it. Far too long, shit dialogue and a shit plot.

Although Wiig was ok, her Cheetah persona was barely fucking used and disposed of so quickly. Which is especially strange seeing as how almost every other scene was dragged out.

There is some absolute dross in there. There’s a fair few Japanese samurai sort of films that are essentially the same and they are all shite.

Lofty
11-01-2021, 10:43 PM
Emilia Clarke has never been able to act, there is a reason she was in one shit straight to dvd film before Game of Thrones: she was cast because she looked the part and was willing to do full frontal nudity. Fair play to her for making the most of it, but it was amusing to get on her high horse about it in later seasons because she would have got nowhere near the job if she didn't get her kit off, she is no Lena Headey.

Ian
11-01-2021, 10:46 PM
Her casting as Sarah Connor was entertaining as well, like somebody had read a fan saying what a great job she was doing as slightly unhinged warrior woman 'Dany' but had never actually seen the show, and she's trendy so she's perfect for this!

Admittedly a good performance from her wouldn't have saved that film anyway, but still.

IMDb is well off the boil. Does RT do a similar list?

Hello Manc. icheckmovies looks like some 2010 shite (it is), but it's fantastic for finding new films n shit. It offers multiple different lists that you can pick from, ranging from the poncey hipster stuff, to safe classics of the canon to more specific stuff like Ebert's great movies list etc etc. If you look at any individual film's list, it will immediately show which top lists (i.e., NOT lists made by random mopes) it appears on, which you can then in turn use to find films of a similar quality/genre etc.

Actually, I like the simplistic design.

https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/tspdts+1000+greatest+films/?sort=runtime

that's the last list I was using - they shoot pictures don't they's top 1000 (determined by thousands of end of year critics BEST OF lists that some fantastic dorks amalgamate with algorithms n shit). Sorted by runtime natch, cus i can't hack long films.

I wonder what the issue with older films that are still quality moving to streaming is? The legendary ones have moved over of course but I feel like there is a big vacuum of 80's/90's films that are just unavailable anywhere except physical media (and then older formats). Seems odd when the main platforms seem to be rotating the same lot of films between them.

Yeah apparently they wrote the screenplay and never thought it would get made due to issues. I'm glad they did make it but it has it's weaknesses. It is an inherent Whedon project that could benefit from less Whedon.

Guys, why is there another Suicide Squad movie? They've already done that.

They brought in James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy success to do a soft reboot.

I just watched Bad Boys For Life and honestly, having expected it to be a wank cash in, I was pleasantly surprised.

You are unfamiliar with DC being terrible at films I see. Also Joel Kinnaman and Viola Davis reprise their roles from the ill fated original. DC have been making terrible decisions about their films for a while as evidenced by the Synder Cut shitstorm, Suicide Squad was just another shit nugget in the diarrhoea soup as they scrambled to catch up with Marvel.

Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis and Jai Courtney are keeping their roles.

They rest of the cast is new though as they're using different anti-heroes.

The Full Monty is still a great film.

I watched TT: Closer to the Edge over the weekend. Guy Martin seems a bit of a fanny but I really enjoyed it. Did anybody see it in 3D at the time? I imagine the helmet cam stuff could have been pretty ace if the 3D was done well.

The fact that it's all carried out by a morbidly obese Russell Crowe is the only reason it works. I reckon he's just about the best celebrity going. He had ten years of making absolute bangers (and should have won three Oscars in a row), somehow got a tough guy reputation from chucking a phone and threatening a couple of ponces, and then semi-retired to get fat on his farm with his kids and his rugby team. What more could anyone ask for in life?

On the subject of bad films I watched two last night, one which was fun and one which was not.

Glass is a load of shite. Split was daft but I thought McAvoy held it together, he tries here but it's nonsense and I'm not sure why you'd hire Bruce Willis if he's just going to go about being this bored all the time.

Then I watched Jiu Jitsu, a film about martial artists who fight an alien every six years so he doesn't kill everybody on Earth or something. It has Nicholas Cage and Crabman from My Name Is Earl in it, and while it's very cheap (the directing is... interesting.... and the alien is just a dude in a fancy armoured suit thing) and mostly rubbish I did at least enjoy that one.

Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In.

Really very good.Just watched this and thought it was pretty toss. It was interesting hearing about his upbringing and his early career but the pacing was terrible, how it jumped between him telling a story from the 60s to about how he felt in hospital after his stroke in 2018, and then back. Plus it just stops at 1999, after giving the CL final far too much of the overall time. I can’t even remember when he left United, off the top of my head, but it sure as shit wasn’t 2000, like a non-football fan might be lead to believe off the back of this.

Didn’t even mention the other CL final he won, or the one(s) he lost.

Honestly, quite diabolical the more I think about it.

Plus the only other people in it apart from his sons are Gordon Strachan (played for him at Aberdeen), Archie Knox (old assistant manager), Cantona and Giggs. Surely Arsene Wenger would’ve done it, and the rest of the ‘92 lot. Ronaldo, even.

Nah. Proper disservice to the greatest manager we’re ever likely to see in our lifetime, cos he clearly insisted on letting of his sons (Jason) make it rather than someone who knew what they’re doing.

It wasn't meant to be a biography of his entire life and the pacing was intentional to focus on his brain tumour cut with his early life. The focus on his earlier life and what formed his character was much more interesting than just going through his entire United career.

I’m on about 245 right now... I’ve been within 2 or 3 I think at peak. The list just keeps churning up new shite for me to squint through.

There’s some corkers in there but be prepared for many, many similar outings as above.

Just noticed this.

We printed off the list in 2017 and are working through that version, and then we'll probably mop up any bits from the current list once we've done. We've got about 75 left to go.

I think the top 200 or so are pretty fixed but the bottom 50 rotate constantly. They're all about 8.1 and there's probably about 0.00001 between them all, so probably doesn't take much to shift everything around. Only about half of the bottom 50 last time I looked on the website are on our list, and they were all old films.

There's no in between with King adaptations. They are either brilliant or dogshit

There could be a lucrative venture in remaking all the shit ones to a passable standard.

Watched Drag Me to Hell last night, never seen it before. Wasn't what I expected, not bad just mental.

Where does Thinner stand on the King scale? I enjoyed that film but I don't think I'd like it viewing it now.

I watched It Chapter 2 last night. It's pretty meh. It's better when it's just doing creepy unease than when it does the daft CGI 'scary' bits.

Totally agree, that restaurant scene is more like Harry Potter than nightmare fuel.

What was the last decent horror film you watched? Genre seems to be in the pits. Hereditary has me tempted.

Hereditary is excellent. The Conjuring is one of my favourites, bucked the jump scare trend at the time. The Babadook is worth a look if you havent seen it. It Follows also good. I liked Summer of 84 but not as good as the former titles.

Hereditary is fucking awful and Lofty is on crack. It made me lol a good few times.

the bit with the head being knocked off in the car and the son just leaving it and fucking off to bed and the mum kneeling on the ceiling headbutting like Lionel Richie on a bad trip.

Ari Aster's follow up, Midsommar, makes it look like The Shining.

Just watched Army Of The Dead - absolute bollocks from start to finish. Some good shooty bits but otherwise nonsense. Very hard to care about any of the characters due to the lack of effort to give them a back story
