Honestly I think that improves it in my head. I absolutely wouldn’t, but I appreciate the passion and interest. Bet it was a cracking experience for you.

Are you even based down that way, or was it a journey too?

To add some flavour to the discussion - do you have a bucket list of posh restaurants across the country you’re working through?

We're in Norfolk. I booked the restaurant for my wife's birthday as it's the place she really, really wanted to go. It happened to fall on the weekend of our anniversary so we stayed down in London for a couple of nights and made a joint celebration of it.

The place in the UK I'd most like to go is L'Enclume. Second would be The Fat Duck. Ynyshir also appeals to me but my wife's pescatarian so that one isn't happening. There's loads of other places I'd like to go but those are the really special ones I've got my eye on at the moment.

Further afield, I'd love to go to one of the top places in Copenhagen (Noma or Geranium).

Well, apart from the knives and the pepper grinders.

And some sort of boy racer wagon.

Haven't bought a car yet because I haven't saved up the money to.

Obviously I do occasionally buy things other than just going to restaurants. But I tend to obsess over something for a while, spend a fair amount getting what I actually really want once I can afford it, and then I don't spend on that again. The pepper mill I will have probably forever. The three knives I have will last probably 20 years.

Those little egg rollercoaster things are great. Until you go to someone's house and think it is some sort of rollercoaster for eggs and start one from the top before watching it ramp off the end onto the floor. :cab:

We did two nights stay and one night at the restaurant, assume it was a late cancellation as we only booked a few weeks before but it tied in nicely with my wife’s birthday so we just did that plus both our Christmas presents as it wasn’t cheap!

The breakfast in Rogan & Co was pretty sensational as well. Would recommend that for sure. A couple of great little pubs and beer/wine shops as well considering how tiny the village is.

I have photos I’ll try and post at some point if you wanted a look.

Core does look amazing to be fair. Not sure I'd be prepared to spend £700 once wine is factored in because there's plenty of other Michelin accredited restaurants knocking around for a fraction of the price. But that being said, I'm not a sucker for a tasting menu so each to their own I guess.

Ian
05-04-2023, 08:20 AM
I did my first tasting menu recently because there was a voucher for it to make the price a bit less lol and while I can confirm I wasn't hungry after I didn't find the whole thing very satisfying even though some.of it was really tasty.

And some of the presentation. Christ.

Just to be clear, I'm not wedded to tasting menus every time I go out for dinner.

Two of my favourite places I went last year (Benoli and The Gunton Arms) weren't tasting menu affairs. But at a place like Core or Martin Berasetagui, I like the opportunity to experience a wide range of what such a chef has to offer, which is where tasting menus are great in my opinion.

What is the crack with 'German Doner Kebab'? I've seen them about so assume it's some sort of chain, but, other than a large Turkish immigrant population, what is special about German Doner Kebab? Some googling suggests they put beef in the elephant leg, is this correct?

Yeah, it's beef or chicken. It's just a fast food chain, but doner kebab's instead of burgers for once. They're pretty good if unspectacular. The lahmacun wraps are their best item.

Working on it. I did have a lahmacun the other night and it was belting. The main differences in Döner to the UK is the lamb pieces are much smaller and taste less like whatever UK lamb donor is supposed to taste like. Plus the sides are just more part of the dish rather than token lettuce. People actually eat it here sober as well.

Sirloin every time. Scorn all you like, but Lidl's 30-day aged steaks are absolutely excellent, especially if you spend a few mins hunting through them all to find the most marbled ones. Season them simply, fry on both sides for a couple of mins, butter in for a minute or so + garlic and herbs. Rest and voila.

Fat has flavour so fillet is definitely the blandest. It's good as part of a dish where other things make up for the lack of flavour - that's where it's texture shines - but I'd never order one just as a steak.

Luca
16-06-2023, 02:17 PM
We did both, and they were both enjoyable in their own way. The stand near our AirBnB had banging tacos de moronga.

It was an ‘odd’ stag do by classic standards - we went museum hopping, did a food tour, did tasting menus. But then again we also got blackout drunk and did the LADS boat cruise. It was a good balance.

‘Off menu’ is usually a) stuff they’ve got in as a bonus from the supplier; b) stuff they are trialing for the main menu. This case I think it was b).

I sort of get the antipathy on the photos (especially the cunts standing on chairs with a DSLR), but food is an experience like any other and I one that I like to remember.

I think I might have had an inclining about the existence of this place (https://www.bemorekaren.com/) from things overheard or some such [probably on the radio], but I have just become more fully aware of its existence and seriously, what the fuck is this? It sounds like one of the worst, most excruciating experiences imaginable.

Rude service is only 'fun' when it's in the Vietnamese Cultural Centre [probably no longer exists] or something where it's not at all put on, but is, in fact, just what the people are like.

Somewhere like Wong Kei (https://chinatown.co.uk/en/restaurant/wong-kei/) would be another example, but apparently no longer reading that. Sad times.
