It's not something I've given much thought to, but I recently I was looking to copy some music to an SD card for the car for my Dad. I don't have the hard copies of what he wants and it's not available via more shady methods (only in .flac), and all my music is via Google Play which can't be downloaded to play via another media.

So where would one start? Does the likes of iTunes download actual .mp3 files?

No, but it allows you to create an MP3 version of tracks once they're on your library.

That looks to have what I need.

I take it those .ru sites are highly illegal judging by the price difference then?

What are you after? We'll band together and find a copy online for you.

.ru = Russia, so...da comrade.

7digital is one of the longstanding, legit, British ones. Or try HMVdigital perhaps.

You can use iTunes but it'll give you AAC files which as Dav says, you might need to fuck about with.

There's no fucking about. One setting to change in iTunes and then you can just right click the tune and bang out an MP3.

What files are you looking for? I'll have a look and can Dropbox them, save you some cash.
