For sure. The memory of winning one major cup in your entire lifetime supporting a team is better than memories of finishing 17th in the Premier League every season.

Reg

Statements like that don't make much sense. Wigan were "something" enough to stay in the PL for years. Southampton (I know they're a bigger club) were in League 1 not long ago, and now they're chasing Europe. Getting to the top league is how you become a bigger club.

Dame N'Doye is expected on Wearside for a medical ahead proposed loan move to Sunderland from Trabzonspor until end of season, Sky sources understand.

The former Hull City striker joined Trabzonspor for £2.2million last summer but he has failed to score since arriving in Turkey.

Could be a good signing, helped give Hull a chance last year for sure.

It's happening:

Newcastle have made their move for Swansea Jonjo Shelvey, with talks underway over a winter-window transfer, Sky sources understand.

Sky Sports News HQ reported last week that Steve McClaren's side were very interested in signing the 23-year-old England international.

Sources understand that discussions are under way between the clubs and a formal bid could be lodged this week, with several English newspapers previously reporting that the player could cost Newcastle around £10m.

Is there something particular about Newcastle's insistence on signing French / French-speaking players? Doesn't seem to have served them particularly well these last few years.

Jimmy Floyd
12-01-2016, 12:08 AM
They're cheaper. I'm pretty sure they recruit exclusively from France, Belgium and Holland.

Jimmy Floyd
12-01-2016, 12:19 AM
The last time they bought a player, for money, from a league better than France, was in January 2012 when they bought Papiss Cissé from Freiburg. All transfers since then have been from France or Holland, and any within England have exclusively been from lower league other than Jack Colback on a free. Even their sole venture into Spain was from the second tier.

Yeah but he'll have been ordered to do so by the bosses because those are 'value' leagues to buy from, full of young players who have had good coaching all their lives but without the sugar daddies around to push their value up. The worst value leagues to buy from are the likes of Turkey and Russia, which are the opposite of that.

Jimmy Floyd
12-01-2016, 12:32 AM
Porto and Benfica have got that model sorted, by the way. Free access to as many South Americans as they want on the cheap (supply chain), a shit league for them to smash (product development), guaranteed Champions League football every year (shop window), and then a selection of mug leagues in both western and eastern Europe to sell to for profit (chav customers).

There's no chance of any of the above going wrong ever, either. Newcastle think they can do the same but all they have is the supply chain. Every other piece of the attempted jigsaw is missing.

So many of their fans still seem to believe that they're even attempting to win, which is odd. I genuinely think Ashley would rather come 12th than 6th.

Samadini
12-01-2016, 12:44 AM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3ENX3aHlqU

John
12-01-2016, 12:51 AM
They don't even really have the supply chain, since that relies on the players who come in doing enough to become saleable assets. It was only about four years ago people were raving about the Newcastle scouting system and their four deep lists of cover signings for anyone who left. Was that just the result of a bit of a scouting purple patch?

Samadini
12-01-2016, 01:08 AM
The scouting of the players still seems on point, the better players just wouldn't touch the club now, especially after seeing Yanga M'biwa, Ben Arfa, Cabella and now Thauvin just wasting their time at the club, so we're now going super budget and ending up with twats like Riviere.

They're still putting in bids for the likes of Batshuayi and Lacazette though, which is pretty fucking fanciful at this point.

I don't get the big problem with the Caulker signing. A decent young English defender who spent the first half of the season at Southampton and played over 30+ Premier League games last season... on loan for 6 months. Way to focus on the negatives.

Newcastle's midfield two have been awful, it's more a case of it being a round peg for a round hole. He will offer something that none of Colback, Anita or Tiote can and is clearly a cut above them, even if he has his issues. We're trying to get rid of Thauvin already :harold: Makes room for the Townsend signing.

We're also now bookies favourites to sign Berahino, surely the only way he ends up at Newcastle is if Spurs don't want him anymore. The backup plan is Remy on loan again, the guy has turned us down on 3 separate occasions, yet we both turn to each other in desperate times of need, what a filthy relationship.

Sunderland have approached Swansea in an attempt to sign striker Andre Ayew, according to Sky sources.

However, it is our understanding that the Swans are keen to keep hold of the Ghana international, who only moved to the Liberty Stadium from Marseille in June.

Can't see that happening, but it sounds good.

Other than that, LA Galaxy 'moved' for Joleon Lescott on Wednesday, Cheick Tioté is travelling to China to speak to Shenhua and Watford have activated Nordin Amrabat's release clause of £6m at Malaga.

Nathan Oduwa has had his loan terminated so he's off back to Spurs, with Michael O'Halloran and Toumani Diagouraga expected to sign before the end of the week.

O'Halloran is a stupidly quick little nobody who we wouldn't be signing had he not fucked us to death with his pace earlier in the season. I haven't seen much of Toumani Diagouraga, but I haven't been too impressed with what I have seen. Overall, not great on paper but hopefully Warburton will get them playing above themselves.

Oduwa is talented, and when he was right at it nobody at this level could even come close to living with him, but too often he'd opt out of the game completely, occasionally even when in possession of the ball, and there can be no allowance for that sort of rubbish.

I don't know if I mentioned this after the debacle on Sunday, but didn't it used to be a skill of management to adapt to your situation, rather than dogmatically following a 'philosophy' regardless of the suitability of the playing resources - or is it the modern way to just burn seasons whilst everyone adapts to the manager's style?

Jorge Sampaoli has left his role as Chile's manager:

Jorge Sampaoli has quit as Chile coach after weeks of tension involving a dispute with the recently elected president of the Football Federation of Chile (ANFP).

Sampaoli, who has been linked with Chelsea after guiding Chile to their first Copa América trophy and earning a nomination for Fifa’s Coach of the Year in 2015, has been seeking a way out of his job saying he no longer felt respected, having also seen details of his contract disclosed in the press.

That wish has now been granted, with a deal reached between the 55-year-old and the ANFP. According to a statement on the ANFP website, Sampaoli paid a price to go, forgoing bonus money he was due for the Copa América win while also agreeing to pay a sum of money to the national federation against his next contract in football.

“With this step the board of the ANFP has achieved the goal of resolving the current situation affecting the national team, avoiding uncertainty involving potential lengthy court actions,” the statement said.

Could be the front runner for quite a few jobs come the summer, even though he's never managed in Europe before.

Real have always claimed the Bale deal was worth €91.59 million, with Ronaldo's fee eclipsing that at €96 million, but the leaked documents have reported that Bale’s fee amounted to €100,759,418 after they opted to pay Spurs in instalments rather than up front.

AS also claim that the document detailing the deal, which runs to six pages, specified that Real would issue a press release stating that the price of the deal was €91.59million. It also stipulates that Spurs could not reveal any financial details surrounding the transfer to the media.

And the report will also have political repercussions at the Spanish giants, as it has long been thought that Real's insistence that Bale's fee was not as large as Ronaldo's was part of a concerted effort to appease their talismanic forward.

Memphis the 3rd highest and about 5 genuinely good moments of play to show for it.

Pato to Chelsea sounds done.

Pato will be a flop here.

You'd be hard pushed to find anybody on the board who'll disagree with you there.

I await the E-Victory post at the end of the season when he does nothing.

I'll save my e-victory for the next mass rape/cover up in this country.

Let's hope it isn't of Premier League defences by Alex Pato then.

I really wish we'd stop buying shit, permanently injured strikers.

Just give Patrick Bamford a run in the side, for fuck's sake.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Pato get off to a storming start before popping his knee out in about game five and never being seen again.

It'd be nice if Crystal Palace gave Bamford a run in the side first. Even a place on the bench might be a start.

Was it Bamford that scored all the goals for Middlesbrough last season? You'd think Palace would give him a shot if they haven't been, seeing as they can't buy a goal.

He's back at Chelsea already. We recalled him/Palace sent him back.

It comes to something when Connor Wickham is keeping you out of the side. How he's managed to forge a Premier League career is beyond me.

Pretty sure Crystal Palace strikers have one goal between the lot of them all season, which is mental.

Not having given Bamford a sniff in light of that is even more mental.
