Back like cooked crack

Been listening to Slime Season pretty solidly past couple of days. Most of the tracks have been out in some form beforehand but still good to get them all properly mixed and in one place. Really have became a massive Thugger fan past 6-12 months.

What has everyone been listening to then?

It's not new, but the remix of Cozz's track 'Knock Tha Hustle' with J Cole is really good.

:D

That's a blast from the past. Old Juelz Santana mixtape?

Anyway, glad we've lived on and made it to the new board. The movement moves on.

A few new ones recently:

Guilty Simpson - Detroits Son

More of the same from Guilty really. Solid release. Interesting production.

Travis Scott - Rodeo

I've always had kind of mixed feelings about this kid but I like this more than I thought I would. Bieber raps on one track on it and actually kind of goes in. :D

Scarface - Deeply Rooted

Not top level 'Face but still pretty solid. He's transitioned pretty well into the "grown up Hip Hop" category.

Jay Rock - 90059

Only just got this the other day so I've only listened to it once but it sounded pretty good. The Black Hippy posse cut is the stand out. A Black Hippy album really needs to happen before the moment passes.

I also agree with AD that the new Lupe mixtape is dope. I'm pretty much a believer at this point, which has surprised me. It's also made me want to go back and listen to Tetsuo and Youth again. That really is a top, top album.

Such a great tune. I love Ab-Souls verse.

"I'm more spiritual than lyrical
I'm similar to Eli......why?
'Cause I'm wearing black shades
And I'm headed West with the word of God"

The whole album has been on repeat.

I don't know about mad underrated. There just isn't that big a market for him, but he is good. His most recent album wasn't particularly great, but was still good and had some really good songs. Whatever that mixtape before was called was a lot better so I'd start with that.

Is Ab-Souls mad underrated? I've never really got round to listening to him that much.

What's his best work/album?

"Control System" is probably the one you want.

His last record "These Days" got kind of poorly received I think, but I still liked that quite a lot. It was just a bit un-focused. It was still probably my second or third favourite rap release from 2014. 2014 was one of the worst years in recent memory though, so I suppose that isn't saying a great deal.

He's kind of the "hippy" one in Black Hippy I always think. A bit more out there with the lyrics and the concepts.

I've been loving these Rhythm Roulette videos since they first started. Georgia Anne Muldrow's was really good too.

I haven't kept up to date with them in quite a while, I need to catch up. This "Sprite Corner" shit with all the drips in the background filming with their fucking camera phones (surely they realise the entire thing is being filmed professionally for Youtube?) is annoying me a bit though.

Georgia Anne Muldrow is really talented and, I always think, really overlooked as a producer (she's got a bit of a "female Madlib" thing going on IMO) so I'll definitely check that one out.

I can see they've got a Mannie Fresh one up as well, that could be interesting.

It's generally pretty hit and miss (some people have made some absolutely awful beats on it) but it's always interesting. The Erick Sermon one is the best one I can remember prior to Just Blaze. I've always found him a really interesting guy to watch work though. Incredibly underrated. He actually has a new one out but I haven't heard it yet.

Oh, and "Meow the Jewels" is a now a real thing that's been released. You can get it for free on their website.

http://www.runthejewels.net

In all honesty it's probably not going to really work is it? Looking at the lineup they've got to work on it it just makes me wish they'd done a legit remix album instead. It was all for a good cause though I suppose.

The cat usually goes mental when it hears other cats on TV and stuff, so I might play it in front of her and see what happens. :D

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the setting. Having each producer go back to their own studio gave a glimpse into their own settings and how they make their own stuff.

Georgia's massively underrated as producer, along with her husband Dudley Perkins. I've always been a fan of that lo-fi/heavily compressed soul loop sound from Madlib and Stones Throw in general.

One of the videos really pissed me off because it was just a dude with his friends getting high and the track he did was terrible. My favourite is Black Milk's but then I'm biased as I'm a huge fan. One of the records he picked up (Herb Alpert's Magic Man) was so beaten up he had to put it in his cupboard and couldn't use it. He looked devastated. Ha!

Yeah, it was better when they went back to the studio. I liked that little glimpse into their working environment as well.

I had no idea Georgia Ann Muldrow and Dudley Perkins were married! I thought they just worked together a lot.

The Black Milk episode is good. You know as soon as he saw Herb Alpert's name he was thinking about the Biggie "Hypnotize" sample that they got from him and hoping for something just as good, no wonder he looked pissed off.

Guys got any tips for a little newer hip hop that's more melodic, like older 2pac, Fugees and other 90's stuff? You know, maybe a bit of piano or violin or plinky plonky beats like that, and maybe a splash of teary eyes in there? Not really emo stuff, like Drake (though I love Drake), though.

Hard to explain what I mean, but stuff like this, for instance:

Cheers AD. Out of those three, though, I only find the Roots one even remotely good. It's a little slow though.
The first one is fucking horrible for trying to fuck up a good Tiersen track as it is. Rappers should just learn to stick with sampling soul, funk, etc.

The second one has quite cringeworthy rhymes and I find the rapper a little bad.

The Roots are obviously quite solid, I'd say they are amongst the better of the currently active rappers.
Lighthouse is an immense track. But yeah, I can't listen to more than 1-2 tracks of The Roots without getting a bit bored either.

Cheers but not that either. Last one has a decent beat, I think, but lacks and nice vocals for the chorus (someone like Jhene Aiko, that isn't too waily), and the rapper himself is quite annoyingly nasal and he does that infuriating thing where he pronounces "man" like "me[ng]" (etc) as if he was a mexican gangster from a 90's film.

All of these tracks are a little slow. Maybe I dind't explain what I'm after quite, it's really hard to articulate. You know Notorious Thugs by Biggie? It's like quite melodic, but it has some tempo and some sweet rhymes in it.

Basically I'm after people today who sort of stick a little to the sounds of the 90's. You know, like any track that had Nate Dogg on it or something like that. I do like some slower stuff, but it's a lot more difficult to pull it off, mainly only Drake can do it, but there are some gems, Little Brother, Jay Electronica have some decent (but not more) tracks.

This isn't half bad:

I just listened to the GOOD Fridays compilation about a week ago, for the first time in ages. He really did put some quality music out over the course of that. Imagine making something as brilliant as "Christian Dior Denim Flow" and not putting it on a proper album or anything.

Been listening to What A Time To Be Alive and Rodeo pretty much non-stop since they came out, really good stuff.

Tried to get into Documentary 2 but it wasn't doing much for me.

Now I got a new Jadakiss tape #T5DOA and all a bunch of Young Thug tapes (finally caved, never gave him a proper listen before).

I just noticed that every time I heard a Young Thug song recently I couldn't stop thinking "why does this trash sound so fucking good?" But it really does.
Best Friend and Power are two amazing songs, so let's see what gems are hidden in his mixtapes.

Also been listening to Dave East - Hate Me Now mixtape, solid stuff for the gym.

So we're coming up to the end of the year, albums of the year time? In my current thinking it's probably

1)The Mick Jenkins tape, Waves or whatever.
2)Action Bronson - Mr Wonderful
3)JayRock - 90059
4)Kendrick - TPAB

and the Pusha album will probably round out the five slipping ahead of JayRock and Kendrick, that's based on little to nothing apart from knowing that every other Pusha album has made by Top 3 of that year.

I tend to prefer Kendrick when he does stuff like Black Friday or Deep Water on Dre's album. He's an absolute beast when he decides to go with that kind of style. TPAB is still very good, like. Just a bit too jazzy themed for it to be one of my favourite albums of the year or anything.

My favourite 5 albums of the year in no particular order:

Tetsuo & Youth - Lupe Fiasco
If You're Reading This It's Too Late - Drake
The Album About Nothing - Wale
Compton - Dr. Dre
GO:OD AM - Mac Miller

Bernanke
03-12-2015, 03:43 PM
Wale, really? Good call on Mac Miller though, I need to listen to that one again.

@spoon, Kendrick is deserving of the hype he gets and at the moment there's no one close to him artistically (Yeezus was cool, but Kanye isn't really delivering top form recently). I only consider around 8-10 albums 'modern classics', and Kendrick has made 2-3 of them.

The list:

Pilot Talk 1
Pilot Talk 2
Covert Coup
Flockaveli
XXX
GKMC
TPAB

Wale's album was really good, I felt. It might be slightly nostalgic because I loved his mixtapes back in '08/'09 and think he hasn't really returned to that style of music until his album this year. When I looked over the list of albums that have come out this year, his is one of my most played, so yeah.

GO:OD AM is great. I do slightly prefer his last album, but it's one of those albums that's so easy to just press play and listen all the way through without skipping any tracks.

I still find it most of it very abrasive and the lyrics off-putting. For me it has basically got to have some sort of jazzy element in it to make the rap worth listening to. To Pimp A Butterfly is just so damn musical.

If you liked Tribe and want more like that Digable Planets and The Pharcyde spring to mind. De La Soul too. Maybe Gang Starr and Pete Rock & CL Smooth as well, they're a bit tougher (tougher sounding I mean, not challenging to listen to) but they retain the jazz element.

You're not talking shit, you just prescribed the bare minimum you've listened to as the majority is all. Hence my slightly frustrated tone

I could point you to a song about how J-Zone is a better rapper than any basketballer and a better basketballer than any rapper or an album where Prince Paul (produced De La Soul) and Dan The Automator (produced The Gorillaz debut album) created an entire record around the concept of them being the creators of a Male Modelling School For Male Models. Hip Hop is great because it can be whatever you want it to be.

I listened to about 100 albums (mostly hip hop) last year but due to life commitments I've only listened to a handful. My stand out joints have been:

Kendrick's TPAB
Guilty Simpson's Detroit's Son
Gangrene's You Disgust Me
Knxwledge's Hud Dreams
Apollo Brown's Grandeur

I'd have added Dilla's Dillatronic but they were mostly old bootlegs so not really a "new" albums per se.

Alex Ferguson

Not Easton?

EDIT: Spoonsky - To add to the previous conversation, I'd highly recommend the following artists/groups if you're into jazz-based hip hop (whether it be samples or jazz fusion type stuff) alongside the ones already mentioned:

Black Milk
Black Moon
Black Sheep
Black Star
Common (until about 2006)
DJ Premier
Dudley Perkins (and Georgia Anne Muldrow)
Flying Lotus
Gang Starr
J Dilla
Jneiro Jarel
Jungle Brothers
Karriem Riggins
Lootpack
Mos Def
Nujabes
Q-Tip
Quasimoto
Slum Village (1996-2002)
Souls of Mischief
The Pharcyde
The Roots (earlier stuff)
Yesterdays New Quintet

The ones in bold are both Madlib aliases if you weren't already aware. Indie wise, check out The Jazz Jousters, Beat Gates, Suhnraw, Bluesteady Triptik, Hooligan (https://hooligan.bandcamp.com/), Tall Black Guy, Vanilla and myself (shameless plug, link in my sig).

What do you lot think of Vince Staples?

I listened to his album after it was in Rolling Stone's best of the year list. I think it's pretty good but a bit samey, which is a shame as a track like Lemme Know shows he can be versatile. Lift Me Up is the obvious standout I reckon (the video is good, too).

I think it could be a grower when I've taken in the lyrics more.

Nekfeu - Feu
Akala - Knowledge is Power 2
Mayday - Future Vintage
Skyzoo - Music For My Friends
Freddie Gibbs - Shadow Of A Doubt

I've got to catch up on so many albums I just never got round to listening too Fashawn, Currensy (2 albums) Rick Ross, (Mixtape + Album), Big Pooh, Pete Rock, Vince Staples, Joell Ortiz, Talib, Jadakiss, still all remain unlistened and I'm sure I missed a few.

Wiki (of Ratking) has released a new album that you can download for free:

http://www.letterracer.com

There's always been something about this kid that I've liked. He always manages to get a sound that 's very authentically east coast, but manages to do it without it sounding like a cheap re-hash of previous New York golden eras.

Looks like they found a buyer for the super-secret, one copy only Wu-Tang Clan album. $2 Million, to some American pharmaceutical CEO who by all accounts is a morally reprehensible little shit.

That scepter is now in the hands of Martin Shkreli, the 32-year-old boss of Turing Pharmaceuticals, a man most famous for hiking the price of a drug used by cancer and Aids patients by 50-fold overnight, Bloomberg magazine reported on Wednesday. He paid $2m for the privilege.

Shkreli tweeted: “If there is a curious gap in your favorite artist’s discography, well, now you know why.”

http://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/dec/09/wu-tang-clan-sole-copy-album-owner-martin-shkreli

Excellent work RZA. "Cash rules everything around me", indeed.

I bet all the talk about what a revolutionary, forward thinking business model that was stops straight away now. He's already on damage control saying that he'll give a "significant portion" of the proceeds to charity. We can console ourselves in the fact that it's undoubtedly a collection of sub-par leftovers and offcuts cobbled together to appear as though some sort of actual effort went into it.

Anybody here listen to any of KA's stuff? Stumbled on him after Earl Sweatshirt said he's the best rapper around at the moment.

Well, he dropped an album in 2015 and it seems pretty dope. Really minimalistic hip-hop but his lyrics are spot-on. This is probably the best song on the album:

I'm enjoying the Anderson Paak album. It's a pretty cool mixture of various styles of rap and R&B, and he seems equally adept at both. He reminds me a bit of Kendrick when he's rapping (he's obviously nowhere near as good as him, he just sounds like him), and then a little bit like a male version of Erykah Badu when he's doing the R&B thing. He's got some good producers and guests on there too. The guy is definitely a talent.
