Been out of the loop for a while. What albums from this and last year should I be listening to?

Had Tetsuo and Youth recommended to me but it seems like something I'd have to be in the mood for, if that makes sense. Definitely give it a few more listens before it gets binned off though.

"Donuts" is ten years old today. That's made me feel my age a bit.

This obviously also means that it's almost ten years since he died as well. :(

I only listened to Donuts for the first time a few months back.

It's really cool. It was also weird hearing so many 'familiar' beats because of others resampling the stuff on the album.

After having gone through it a few times, I can see this having more longevity than Yeezus for me. It's all over the place though, it's more of a mishmash of all of Ye's previous work rather than a bold new direction. Can't forgive him for cutting Vic and Sia from Wolves.

"Ultralight Beam" is fucking great opener, the choir are so good on it. Excellent verse from Chance as well.

This has been such a shoddy album rollout though. He's tweeting about being however many millions of dollars in debt (although I very much doubt he is, at least not to the extent he claims), well he would have my money by now if he didn't make the record so difficult to actually buy.

They need to stop forcing TIDAL on people. I don't think it's ever really going to take off, in fact I think it would be dead in the water already if it wasn't for the strength of Jay-Z's industry connections.

Worst release ever. I haven't listened to it yet (very limited data at home currently) but it sounds like it's a complete mishmash of styles and sounds and this chopping and changing of tracks / track list at the last hours just says lack of direction. His last number of albums have all been fairly tight in terms of number of tracks and overall creative cohesion. Certainly seems a lot different this time around.

Fair? Still looking forward to listening when it eventually gets properly released of course.

simon
14-02-2016, 09:51 PM
Seems fair. I don't quite know what to make of it as an album as it listens more like a list of unreleased tracks rather than a proper focussed piece of work. There are a lot of really, really great tracks in it though.

Bernanke

It's growing on me really quickly. Like, it's coming together, and I can't really point out outright weak songs. I find Feedback and Freestyle 4 abrasive in the same way that Yeezus is, but everything else is 8-10/10. Waves -> Wolves is a fucking amazing string of tracks.

Max Power
14-02-2016, 11:28 PM
Ultra Light Beam is legit amazing but it really is all over the place after that. Defo some great stuff in there though. Probably bring out a new version of the album tomorrow so chill out lads.

Alex
15-02-2016, 04:52 PM
He keeps making thinly veiled begging requests for Mark Zuckerberg/anyone to help him out financially on Twitter now. :D

This is all very strange. He's been very erratic lately, even by his own standards. I think there's a fair chance he might legitimately be cracking up a little bit.

The album is good though. I like it more with every play through. Like others have said, it's not his most cohesive work. Whereas albums like Yeezus and MBDTF were very much mood pieces, this is more of a scattershot collection of different ideas and directions. They're mostly really cool ideas and directions though, so I'm fine with it. Fuck knows if this ends up being the "final" version I'm listening to. I can't see him changing it much to be honest. It's out there now, notable publications are reviewing it and shit.

I imagine all this "please sign up to TIDAL!"/"I'm selling the album in a week when I've "fixed" Wolves" shit is just him staring down the barrel realisation that he's fucked up this album release massively (which he has) and stands to miss out on sales because of it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking that. You would think, approaching 40 and with two kids, he would know better. But a lot of his behaviour seems to point towards him being strung out on something.

Listened to TLOP a few times today, albeit intermittently interrupted by TomTom, and it's pretty good. No More Parties In LA is probably my initial standout track purely because Kendrick's verse is fire and then Kanye goes HAM too, and I like rap ahead of anything else. All seems pretty good though, and looking forward to listening to it more, whereas with Yeezus I just couldn't.

First thing I did after one play through was delete Low Lights though.

The features are weak, in my opinion. Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj aren't current, but their inclusion on Monster for example gave MBDTF a bit more polish. Rihanna's hardly selling records these days so can't really count her as a big feature. Young Thug can get lost, never heard of Desiigner or whatever. Why didn't Andre 3000 do a verse? It's like it's not actually him and Kanye's just like "yeah cmon three stacks" and it's weird. Chance's verse is good (although pales in comparison to his one with Busta). The Weeknd song is prob my second favourite but that's because I'm a bit of secret stan, and Chris Brown's feature is so shoe it's almost unnecessary. Was surprised he didn't get anyone from the grime scene (unless I missed it?) on the back of his All Day performance. Having Yungen pop up on a track, or a rhyme-off with various members of BBK, similar to Smuckers with Tyler The Creator and Lil Wayne would have made my year. :D Needed a Bieber hook too.

The album cover is one of the worst I've ever seen, mind you.

The only really great feature is Chance on the first track imo. I mean, Thugger does his thing, but it's not like you'd ever get blown away by his lyricism or whatever.

Speaking of his mass debt, I read somewhere that when he first tried to get into fashion he met with people in the industry who charged him like 250k for "tutoring sessions" (scum). Kanye seems like the kind of guy to totally go for that if he's enthusiastic about making a go at it, so he probably bleed money during that process.

I've just got a Tidal trial (for the second time, using a different email address).

I wasn't too keen on first listen but I can tell there's some tracks I'll be going back to a fair bit. I echo others' thoughts though - it doesn't feel like an album, much more like a mixtape and not a particularly focused one. It's surprising in one sense after such definite styles on Dark Fantasy and Yeezus but perhaps we should have expected it given his focus is on fashion nowdays. :(

Facts is my least favourite track. I really don't give a shit about Nike, Kanye. In fact the lyrics and flow are just about my idea of the worst rap has to offer.

Ultralight Beam and FML are the two standouts for me.

I think that's fair. He even says during 30 Hours that it's "a bonus". It's basically a five minute stream of consciousness draft.

Fade is no kind of album closer. There are parts of the album I really like, but I can't help but feel this could have been so much better with a little more direction and focus.

My Logic tickets have arrived so I've been listening to a lot of him lately. April 23rd baby. I've realised that it'll be a complete and utter letdown if he doesn't do Nasty and, really, I don't think he will.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVbTkFsCc24

It's ridiculous how pumped that song gets me, nevermind live.

When I saw B.o.B. live, it was okay but as soon as Beast Mode started it was out of this world. Four minutes of amazing. I wanna have that with Logic.

Instead he'll probably just play stuff off his newest album, which I don't really like. Hopefully he'll at least perform Bounce from his last album, but even then it's unlikely.

Nasty would be GOAT. Ballin' and On The Low would be pretty good too, I guess.

For £14 I shouldn't really complain, but I just know one song could make it from a fun night to an awesome one.

It's like the second time I saw Chiddy Bang, he didn't do Truth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3x58NbPRNNg) and it was such a let down compared to the first time.

Also the tickets say it's at The Ritz but I was under the impression it was at Academy 2. Thankfully you have to walk past the Ritz to get to Academy, but it's a bit weird.

Googled it. Seems to be The Ritz. Also found this:

That track (or the first half of it you're referring to there) is probably my favourite on the whole record. That is 7 I think? The first section of that is my highlight.

I also like untitled 5 a lot. I think I mean 5 anyway, I've been playing the whole thing on repeat a lot and it's sort of blended into one. "I got 100 on my dash, got 200 in the trunk". That one.

Obviously 8 is cool as fuck as well.

It's basically all very good and worthwhile though. The only bit I can do without is the extended guitar jam ("head is the answer" etc) at the end of 7. Imagine being so on top of your game that you can throw your leftovers out there and it's better than 95% of other peoples actual shit.

Judging by this you could definitely imagine "To Pimp a Butterfly" being one of those records that gets the super-deluxe, 8 CD reissue in 20 years time so we can all listen to every single outtake from those sessions. That definitely sounds like something by future, middle-aged self would be all over.

I done made an Apollo Brown playlist on Spotify if anyone's interested. Is there anyone else around making similar consistently good boom bap? I know it's not exactly the popular sound at the minute, but I thought someone big might have given him a go at some point in the last few years. His stuff can be a bit samey at times, but you can't argue with the overall quality and consistency of the beats.

Other people do it, but I don't think anybody churns it out quite as prolifically as Apollo Brown. Statik Selektah is the other obvious, big exponent of it I guess.

Oddisee, Damu, Marco Polo, Mr. Green, The Doppelgangaz, Gensu Dean. They all do similar sorts of things to varying degrees of success.

I can't decide whether I like the Flatbush Zombies debut album or not. Well, that's not really fair. I do like it. I just can't decide how much I like it, whether it's legitimately great or just OK.

It definitely scratches that itch when it comes to no-nonsense, New York beats and rhymes. It's got that covered. I feel like the two mixtape's, Better off Dead in particular, were probably better though.

Alex
17-03-2016, 07:03 PM
Also, on a more general note, I've really been listening to a shit load of Hip-Hop again recently. Which is nice. I never thought I'd lost interest, but I was definitely slacking off a bit latelys. I think Kanye and his car-crash of an album release pissed me off a little bit.

I watched the NWA film a few weeks ago though and it set me off again big time. The thought the film was great too, a lot better than I thought it would be. Ice Cube's kid is his fucking double. I was worried about that casting, but he's so much like him he couldn't have really failed.

I'm currently slap bang in the middle of a massive east coast phase and have revisited all kinds of shit I haven't played in ages, years in some cases. Just over the past couple of days Def Squad's "El Nino", Large Pro's "The LP", LL's "14 Shot's to the Dome" (I always thought this was pretty underrated), Pete Rock's "Soul Survivor". Good times.

One of the best opening verses in rap history? I don't know, but I would say it's in the conversation. Obviously they had made an album before this, but this always sounded like his arrival to me. Phife was never the greatest technically but the energy was ridiculous, and this is a great example of it.

I would also recommend anyone who hasn't already heard it checking out his one solo album, "Ventilation: Da LP". It's not a classic or anything, but it's a really solid album with a really cool line up of producers. Hi-Tek, Dilla, Fredwreck, Pete Rock and Supa Dave West. Really good, and really underrated, little album.

I always sort of assumed Tribe would get back together for an album, or at least a single, at some point. 45 is really no age to die. Pretty rubbish day all around. :(

I've been listening to the new Elzhi album quite a lot this last week, I'm pleasantly surprised by how good it is. This is the one where he funded it through Kickstarter and then subsequently pissed all of his fans off by disappearing off the face of the earth and never updating them on what he was doing. That actually seems to have given him a lot of good material for the album though, because he gets into the reasons a little bit. Depression, legal woes, drink and drugs seem to have the crux of it.

I was worried by the production line up, looked a little bit budget (for want of a better word) but he's picked his beats really well. I would definitely recommend giving it a shot.

Royce has just released a new EP (well, he calls it an EP but it's longer than a lot of albums) that is quite good. I couldn't find a tag-free version of it though, so you do have to content with the occasional "Datpiff dot com, WORLD EXCLUSIVE". I really wish they would stop with that.

or try other Mac Dre songs.

can you give me literally any other lyrics?

The chorus was just like "oh yeah" or something generic like that. "Vallejo California" was in a verse and it was followed by another place name but I don't remember which one. There was also something earlier about his girl filling up the gas in his car.

I think Views is going to be a grower. It seems like a step back to the older, more-insular, introspective Drake. Reminds me a bit of how I first felt about Take Care. It's missing a lot of the straight up, hard bars, brag-rapping of the last couple. He's obviously loving himself a bit of Dancehall now as well. The patois is a bit much in places. Definitely something I'm going to be listening to repeatedly though. I already enjoyed it like at least twice as much on second listen.

Also, the digital booklet that came with it, if you didn't know otherwise you would think it was straight-up satire of his whole persona.

:D

It's basically just a collection pseudo-artistic shots of him looking similarly serious and moody in a variety of (sometimes ridiculous) settings.

"This is my Rolls and this is my dawg Royce. Dis where he shit. I don' give a fuck."

I must've heard some Drake by osmosis. Started from the Bottom is his, right? Thanks, NBA2K14. Also, a word about the other two Wu Tang albums I picked up: The W is odd. It starts off like a continuation of 36 Chambers with the kung fu samples and general overtones but then goes kinda sideways. Careful is a nice tune. Conditioner sounds like ODB literally phoning one in from prison. Gravel Pit stands out, which I didn't expect. Almost like they needed a single. Iron Flag was a lot more listenable but its a lot less Wu. Its like they decided "Let's just make an album with none of the baggage." It works out okay, like a latter De La Soul effort. Disappointed Flava Flav couldn't slap on a verse, mind. I know you're a hypeman but c'mon. Snoop did better on Conditioner which, at one point I thought was just going to be "Say What?!" every other line.

36 Chambers remains some timeless, monumental business.

I think to some extent Drake is 'in on the joke' and is pretty self aware. He knows what he is and he knows his lane. Probably why he can manage to churn out such consistently enjoyable and successful projects.

I like Lil Dicky's music but I can't shake that he's absolutely everything wrong with white privilege at the same time.

Chance 3 (or "Coloring Book", as it's now known) is out.

I hope they've left the tags off it. I'd rather this listening experiencing wasn't punctuated at regular intervals by "DATPIFF DOT COME WORLD EXCLUSIVE!!". :D

My main:

It's missing a lot in terms of "classics", but it's a pretty good reflection of what I usually listen to.

Chance 3 seems really fucking good on first impressions, I've got a feeling I'm going to play the shit out of it this summer. Awesome features, really nice, uplifting, soulful/gospel vibe. Just a really cool project.

Alex
13-05-2016, 09:29 PM
It's also got Jay Elec's obligatory, annual "hey everyone, I'm just here to remind you all how brilliant I am at rapping, I'm still never going to release an album though, see you next year" verse on it.

Stumbled back across this today. Where's Amigo?

Also, I've had WAVE[S] by Mick Jenkins sat in my iTunes for ages without ever really listening to it properly. Despite his name sounding more plumber than rapper, it's really great.

Coloring Book is too smooth for me. I could listen to All Night forever though.

Do any of you listen to female MCs? Aside from old Nicki Minaj, I'm a pretty big Nitty Scott MC fan, and Snow That Product puts out some good tracks, but other than those it's not really an area of hip-hop I know much about. Would like to get into it.

Not any current ones but Lauryn Hill is great.

Yeah, I'll second Jean Grae and Lauryn Hill. Lauryn Missy Elliot, especially her earlier stuff when Timbaland was in the zone. I always thought Rah Digga was quite good too. "Dirty Harriet" is a decent album, she worked with some good producers. The first Lady of Rage album is worth checking out also.

I was going to make a playlist of Complex's Top 50 rap songs by women (http://uk.complex.com/music/2013/04/the-50-best-rap-songs-by-women/) but I question it's seriousness from #50 being Kreayshawn.
