More Mid-Morning Matters on the way. Personally, I wish they'd return to the format of I'm Alan Partridge and give us another series of that, you shits.

I liked the one he did around Norwich that came along when they launched Mid-Morning Matters, something like that would be good. The film was a bit shit.

This is getting a bit Ricky Gervais.

I didn't like the chat show format or mid-morning matters as much as the more traditional radio-sitcom effort. Series 2 and 3 were genius stuff. Coogan is a complete cock, himself, but credit where it's due.

SvN

Which radio sitcom? I've listened to Knowing Me Knowing You and On the Hour - is there more?

Disco

I think he means the ones where the character was on the radio in Norwich, living in the travel tavern etc.

QE Harold Flair

Yes, as in a more traditional situation comedy rather than him just doing the radio or a chat show.

Got it yesterday. Not just an audiobook btw, but obviously it's the best format for him.

I think I'm on chapter 5 now. It's broadly similar to I, Partridge. The section about Dawn in the swimming pool had me lolling on the drive home yesterday. Top stuff.

New show out on BBC next month

https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/jurassic-park-alan-partridge-looks-15641533

I do hope it doesn't disappoint. Sounds like it's similar to KMKYWAP in format.

Jimmy Floyd

Has he ever done anything shit with Partridge? Obviously you'll never hit the heights of I'm Alan Partridge series 1, but the genius of the character makes all of it at least decent.

SvN
18-01-2019, 03:04 PM
I don't think anything has ever been "bad". But as it's a proper TV series on a proper channel, I'd hope it comes close to the older stuff in quality. The one offs he's done over the past decade have all been pretty good, but nowhere close to KMKYWAP and I'm Alan Partridge.

wullie
18-01-2019, 03:20 PM
It's all the same writing team that's been involved in the Sky stuff and the books so it should be great.

Baz

The comedian explained: “What we do is we have him trying to jump on the bandwagon and say, you know, he says ‘Hey! I’ve made mistakes, I’ve stood on the side of the sidewalk and slow hand-clapped while I watch a woman try to parallel park, you know, and I feel bad about that. And now if I saw a woman doing it now, I would shout instructions’.”

I'm already well on board.

Also I'd never heard of Scissored Isle. Is it worth a watch? Last thing I remember was him showing us around Norwich, with the standout bit being him in a swimming pool with someone while nearly drowning but edited so when the other person asked if he was alright, it cut to a shot of him stood calmly in a pool saying "yeah fine."

Scissored Isle was good. I think I prefered "Welcome to the Places of My Life" which features the scene with the swimming pool, but they're both about the same, really.

It's like the film version of David Brent in that he seems to have become an actual retard. There are some funny lines in it, but it doesn't really lend itself to satirising something because in the real world nobody would be going along with a weird local rock tour/disastrous, un-edited bacteria films.

Yevrah
25-02-2019, 10:05 PM
Average overall I'd say.

Much like a lot of Gervais' recent stuff it came across as tired and very unoriginal, while having some amusing bits in it. Having not been on the BBC for years, why would you go back for that? It's not like he's short of a bob or two or that they pay particularly well compared to the other gigs he could get.

Jimmy Floyd
25-02-2019, 10:05 PM
I enjoyed it. The content stuff was funnier than the pissing about in the studio stuff though, which was more cringe than funny. I think it would have been better aired as-on-TV.

Kikó

See, I thought the first time he went to Simon with the big touch screen was brilliant. And one of my favourite bits.

Lewis
25-02-2019, 10:09 PM
The hacker bit was good but then it went stupid in the lift.

Alex
25-02-2019, 10:15 PM
It was a good enough start. The highlights were Sidekick Simon messing up the Tweets, somebody shouting "Partridge, you wanker!" at him when he was walking down the street in one of the segments and (particularly) the interview with the "hackitvist". Particularly when he skewered him with "this giraffe is winding it's neck in". :D

I would have liked a bit more Lynn screen-time. Although, "the slag from the bible" was a very un-Lynn like comment.

Jimmy Floyd
25-02-2019, 10:15 PM
Looking at the (very positive) twitter reactions I think it might have had broader appeal than us bunch of old cynics on here would recognise.

Yevrah

Dark Soldier
25-02-2019, 10:34 PM

Jimmy Floyd
04-03-2019, 10:55 PM
The whole bit with the posh wanker on was masterful, like a W1A crossover in which Partridge stuffs them on our behalf.

I think the reason this is getting mixed reviews is people go in expecting a laugh-out-loud I'm Alan Partridge kind of romp, when it's actually just a very astutely observed piece of satire.

Best episode so far. I thought it was brilliant, up there with the best Partridge.

I actually think every segment was great. The bit with the Scottish guy, the contradicting woman who hates him, the school smacking stuff. I even enjoyed the Sidekick Simon stuff even though it's basically the same joke over and over.

Jimmy Floyd
12-03-2019, 12:02 PM
I just thought Sidekick Simon and the guy from Sunderland being hit by his wife were jokes that are good for one line but spun out into five minutes each, not so sure. In this format it kind of needs to be solid gold throughout, which is a big ask but still.

Anyone getting upset by it is completely missing the joke, which is Alan's inability to deal with an awkward situation that reflects poorly on him, and his further inability to deal with anyone that he doesn't deem to be his equal. Any Norn Irons getting upset because they think it's a) In support of the IRA or b) anti Republican are just a bit sa(aaaaa)d.

Going to see Strategem tomorrow night in Belfast. Really intrigued to see what Partridge will be like live.

This was… interesting. Spoilers in case anyone is going. I’d imagine there could be a recording of the show released sometime

The show is essentially Alan hawking / explaining his self-help life management system. There are backing dancers at times - with one excellent, probably accidental, run in with a young girl in a park. There were a few musical numbers including a medley of 80s power ballads to close the show. Martin Brennan from This Time ‘zoomed’ which was probably the highlight. Lynn appeared via phone and on Alan’s home security footage. There’s also some time travel to speak with past and future Alan, which was quite amusing. He also came down into the crowd at one point, with a few people having facial judgments made (Alan is diagnosed medically gormless).

Overall it was funny, but probably not the best format for the character. It’s in a similar vein to some of his stuff in This Time I would say.

Big Beacon is very excellent. Although I think he's having trouble with his timeline with the plot of this book, the Oasthouse podcast, Covid, and This Time. The writing is as good as ever.
