It would be very WWE if they went into the night halving the number of world champions and managed end up with non active for a bit.

Unless they're going to do another new belt which would be absolutely baffling.

Ben

Was the main event cut short? Some screenshots make Roman Reigns' arm look like he properly fucked it up.

12 minutes is about Brock’s limit isn’t it?

Browning
04-04-2022, 08:11 PM
The only reason I don't think Reigns can be injured is because surely if it was.... you call an audible and let Brock win. Unless of course Brock is done (but that doesn't seem to be the case).

But yea... that didn't seem like the planned finish, at all.

I really liked Mania and thought it was the best in a while.

I also called that the Zayn/Knoxville fight would be the best match of the event and for me it was. It was everything I wanted and more.

The PPV/PLE might have been low on technical wrestling (and when they tried it with Edge it was boring) but it was really entertaining.

phonics
04-04-2022, 08:45 PM
Oh, I stand corrected.

So which were the good ("good") bits of Wrestlemania people are being too miserable about?

Also I look forward to you never again criticising anything which is meant to be fun.

Specifically to you, the Jackass bit was fun. To Ben, who described the best Mania in something like 8-10 years as Garbage? I just don't get it. It wasn't a technical masterclass. Nor was X7. But it put a smile on my face. I was thoroughly Sports Entertained.

Ben

I don’t like sports entertainment really. I only come in here because it doubles up as a general wrestling thread.

phonics

I think wrestling is at it's best when it's doing both hence why I liked this era of AEW prior to Punk and Daniel Son coming in. You'd have Ray Fenix and Pac have a banger and then you'd have Matt Hardy being dumped in a swimming pool and being baptised and reborn as his various characters up to and including various Matt Facts popping up on screen or Jericho and MJF doing a broadway show. It's dumb. Wrestling is at it's best when it's Panto meets big blokes smashing each other.

edit: When I got into it a big spooky undead man was having a fight with his brother who wore a mask and spoke through a voice box because the spooky undead man had killed his parents in a fire and a guy who wore a gnarled mask because he was a freak was also a 70s hippy and Stone Cold Steve Austin was hitting vince mcmahon with a piss pan and asking for a 'price check on a jackass' while bowling Booker T through a pile of melons. Wrestling is dumb. That's why its great.

Shindig
04-04-2022, 08:54 PM
I'll agree with that. They can't kill each other for our amusement any more so I'll gladly take the dumb. Not that I watch much these days.

I'm not interested in Jackass so I skipped it and that was the extent of my comment on it.

Specifically because I don't want to watch something I know I'll not enjoy and then whine about it. (I'll concede the point on the Edge match because I was really hoping AJ would get something out of him and for about three minutes I thought he was going to.)

Why Ben is tuning in if he hasn't enjoyed a Mania in a decade (or why Browning tunes in for 95% of it) is beyond my ken.

The biggest disappointment across the weekend was the unfulfilled promise of Shane-o-Mac.

Ian
04-04-2022, 09:32 PM
If they were doing it on purpose (it's so hard to tell with WWE, sometimes they're capable of masterful stuff) then I thought they did a great job of creating just enough doubt over Rollins facing somebody who wasn't Cody.

Unless it was just me but between the lights going down and the "wrestling has more than one royal family" there was just a moment where I was waiting for the gong.

Imagine if they'd done that and had people going "oh well no Cody but at least we've got the Undertaker" THEN Here Comes The Money had hit.

I only watch the Rumble and Mania these days, I don't bother with anything else. Even those are normally shite, but this mania was an exception.

Someone pointed out to me that Cody has all his people in the front row while Seth was in the ring, so there wasn't any doubt for me, but going into the event I think they'd created some, especially with the "reports" Cody didn't want to do Mania.

Yeah Rampage sounds like it had some good stuff on it so I might need to check a bit of that out.

I see it's gonna be Nakamura losing to Reigns at Wrestlemania Backlash: The Revenge. That could be a fun match but it'll probably be the template they have Reigns wrestling against most opponents but fingers crossed the Rollins match is a sign they're prepared to mix it up a little especially when we know Nakamura is definitely losing.

And Baz I think at this point we just have to put Danielson's style down as Not Your Thing. The Rampage match wasn't a classic or anything but it was solid and did what it needed.

Google tells me they're anywhere from about $30 to $120 for a Raw ticket and I assume Smackdown is the same. But yeah, not unlike them these days to not actually have many matches on their TV shows, it's a bit of a pisstake and having been to a Raw in Glasgow can confirm just makes it even worse for the live audience when it's already not a show catered to the people who're actually there.

And yes, Vince looks basically dead and should have stopped appearing on TV about five years ago.

Watched some bits and pieces of wrestling from the last week.

Alexander vs Ishii - There wasn't an awful lot of selling in this but I do enjoy two hard blokes just smacking each other about. Can't quite get on board with Alexander's headgear though.

Rollins vs. Rhodes - Was surprised that Cody won but they're still doing the 'bury the new guy in an endless initial feud.' Thought it was a really good match though. These two have really good chemistry. They really need to give Rollins some wins though. Just checked and he's not won a PPV match other than by DQ since June.

RKBro / McIntyre vs. Bloodline - I mean it's a house show match, isn't it? But it was a lot of fun and while it's a classic trope in this sort of setup I thought they did the thing of Roman dodging McIntyre until he fucked up a tag and ended up in the right with him quite well. Not really sure why the finish wasn't McIntyre pinning an Uso though.

Hardwood vs. Cole - Hardwood wrestling as a singles babyface is odd but he did it really well here and it was a decent match. He also does a really good Sharpshooter and the pop for that was mega, but Cole still looks like he's in the bottom 5% of pro wrestlers I've who I'd expect to win a real fight.

The MJF contract signing was fun. MJF is great, of course, but his "heel in his hometown" schtick was awesome. I got a big chuckle out of "people in the cheap seats, you're poor but you're still beautiful."

I absolutely love WWE apologising in their statement for not being able to deliver the advertised main event as well, as if they don't advertise one thing and do another on the reg.

The last two times I've sought out an episode of Raw (I'm not mad I just wanted to see the quite excellent lie detector angle) they started the show without having a main event booked anyway so this does seem somewhat petty. None of it is a shock though, they haven't cared about tag titles for decades at this point.

Made up or not the fact that most people seem to see that statement and believe that they might very easily do it tells you enough about what sort of company they are.

LA Knight is now "Max Dupri" because apparently they really screwed the pooch when they named him a whole year ago. The vitriol for anything that was on Black & Gold NXT is real.

Also Ricochet vs. Walter could be good if WWE just give them some time to have a good match. O'Shea is definitely getting splattered and it's a pity they don't care about the IC title but getting one nice thing out of it would be alright.

Ian
21-05-2022, 11:48 AM
They did it when Austin fucked off and that wasn't a work. All it takes is for it to have annoyed Vince enough. I'm not saying it's 100% not a work but I don't think WWE talking about it says much. Them actively sending Fightful a statement when often they'll blank a request for one is odd but given a couple of versions of the story involve them basically saying half the womens division doesn't matter they could have just been trying to get ahead of it.

if they had no real competition they'd probably have sacked Banks off by now but there's no way they want Khan signing her.

Speaking of I saw Big Damo was on Rampage. Their roster is a bloated mess.

Rollins / Rhodes is Uncle Dave's first five star main roster match since Punk / Cena and only the sixth five star main roster match ever. Hmmm.

I will say that I watched it and it is probably among the best WWE HIAC matches in a good number of years (which is a very low bar) if only because Rhodes' hideous tit gave them something interesting to work around and in itself makes the match more memorable. They're moving most of the PREMIUM LIVE EVENTS to Saturday now.

All of the currently announced events (SummerSlam, Clash at the Castle, Extreme Rules, Crown Jewel and Survivor Series) are all on Saturday too.

Also, this card looks so damn predictable.

Becky (unless there is a surprise Charlotte/Bayley), Bianca, Rollins, Ronda, Usos and Bobbles are all winning.

Riddle and Liv should win the briefcases. They won't, but they should.

Liv especially because a) she is actually good and b) it would have Becky continue the downward spiral bastard heel angle.

For the me I've made no secret of my appreciation of Rollins in this thread but Riddle would be the options most fitting of what MITB should be for and the most options going forward with Orton's return and whatnot.

But it'll be Seth and Becky.

Seth wins the briefcase, takes the title from Roman at SummerSlam and holds it until Mania where he faces Cody who returned to win the Rumble?

Could also see them having Rollins win, try to replicate his Mania 31 win at Summerslam but Reigns flattens him and wins. Keeps the belt(s?) on Roman, Bork doesn't "lose" and they clearly don't think Seth losing matters.

I’m still up so stuck this on.

FTR called out The Usos so will see what the fuss is.

They just had Alexa Bliss do what appeared to be a segment only to actually be an advert for WWE's credit card.

The boos from the crowd were glorious.

The Omos table spot is brilliant.

They’ve still only had one woman hold MITB for more than 24 hours, and she needed a bloke to win it for her. What a joke they’ve made it already.

Doesn't sound like there's anything I need to make a point of watching but the winners are a pleasant surprise despite WWE randomly inserting somebody into the match again. Doesn't feel like Theory's going to cash in on Reigns so dunno what's gonna happen there.

And I'm pleased for Morgan but even with the briefcase having to win by roll-up? C'mon lads.

Tag match was great. Rest is all skippable.

This might sound crazy, but I think I've had an incredible idea for next week's RAW main event. How about.... Becky Lynch Vs Asuka?
