Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane heading from Baku to Grozny has crashed in Kazakhstan due to fog. Reported 105 on board.

Merry Christmas.

Better that than arriving in Grozny tbh.

The place it went down is quite strange considering where it was going from and to, no?

It had to divert due to fog.

Any news on the sexuality of the pilot(s)?

Is that legit? Did they know prior they had issues, who would be filming it pre crash?

UFO mad Americans do this all the time. I guess the only difference is they don't have ballistic missiles, thankfully.

All part of the plan.

I mean, he (and arms manufacturers) are the only winners in this so far right? The West is spunking billions up the wall, Ukrainians are still dying, parts of the country are a literal war zone, he’s shooting passenger planes down with complete impunity (again) and we’re, what, 3 years into this now and there’s no sign of it stopping.

Still, moral high ground. WINNING.

niko_cee
27-12-2024, 09:11 AM
If that's the logic then surely American arms manufacturers are also making out like bandits as well, which is why I've never understood the contrary/Donald Trump position. This is strategically great for the yanks. Advanced weapons testing, isolate and degrade a major strategic rival, ability to get rid of old inventory and all on someone else's coin in all likelihood, no body bags to ruin the optics, BlackRock BlackRock BlackRock!

Also, even if this is air defence gone wrong, it is still an accident.

Shindig
27-12-2024, 09:19 AM
Yep. Plus Putin lost an ally in Syria over the course of this. God knows how many North Koreans have been minced.

Lewis

The only strategic rival the Americans are degrading with this is Europe, and they are more than happy to do so.

Lewis

She is one of our imported NHS heroes. My work actually prohibits me from going to Iran except under very exceptional circumstances (which I doubt anyone has ever tested), which is a bit of a result for not meeting a thousand relatives.

Attending family events is the worst part of going to France, so you got quite the deal there.

Tell her I thank her for her service.

Lewis

I believe we would currently be arrested for cutting about publicly as an unmarried couple (unless we could blag being related, which we couldn't), so family events might have to do. :harold:

Aren't runways meant to have large run off areas to prevent the sort of thing that seems to have happened in Korea?

Days ahead of the so called experts.

Aviation experts have raised questions about an "unusual" concrete wall near the runway and its role in the South Korea plane crash that killed 179 people.

Air safety expert David Learmount said that if the "obstruction" was not there, the plane "would have been come to rest with most - possibly all - those on board still alive".

Shindig
30-12-2024, 06:51 PM
I still don't understand why the gear and flaps weren't deployed for landing. Birdstrikes wouldn't normally mess with hydraulics like that.

niko_cee
30-12-2024, 07:55 PM
Use the manual override for landing gear and flaps was probably point 225 on the plane's about to crash checklist.

Shindig
30-12-2024, 08:05 PM
They were attempting to land. A landing they were cleared to do. You don't okay that without thinking about putting the gear down.

Clunge
30-12-2024, 08:09 PM
Bird strike taking out both engines at relatively low altitude would require a lot of key decisions to be made vvv quickly. That could have resulted in the landing gear not being lowered, owing simply to time or a failure (a double engine failure could well cause further collateral damage). The footage appears to suggest the pilots actually made a pretty good emergency landing, the plane was down and skidding on the fuselage without any discernible structural damage and they clearly got it well lined up. If it had have been a landing gear failure on touchdown, I'm sure we would have seen this or know this already.

niko_cee
30-12-2024, 08:12 PM
Mr Learmount said the landing was "as good as a flapless/gearless touchdown could be: wings level, nose not too high to avoid breaking the tail" and the plane had not sustained substantial damage as it slid along the runway.

"The reason so many people died was not the landing as such, but the fact that the aircraft collided with a very hard obstruction just beyond the runway end," he said.

No Shully sequel I guess.

Lofty
31-12-2024, 08:01 AM

Didn't they say that about Sully? If they followed the handbook they'd be dead, only Sully's experience had them cycle through things quicker and make an assessment that saved them all.

There are hints of complete failures among the pilots, and all to do with that Asian hierarchy. This will make for another awesome air crash investigation episode like the Japanese one.

niko_cee

The pilot said the wheels were down and rather than correct him hierarchical protocol demanded everyone be condemned to a fiery doom.
