How does a 40000 seater stadium cost £400 million? Were they trying to build some half-sized NFL mega stadium? Surely a basic all-seater stadium can be built far cheaper than that.

Winning is an interesting take on it when letting them fanny around with the ball has been a pretty solid strategy for their opponents so far this season. Hopefully it all comes together for them today.
It’s like being 1-0 up on an old pro evo where a win is an absolute must, so you just stand still with the ball at left back until full time, while the opposition fannies about without getting too close. Martinball.

Notts Forest coming as the first team looking to counter SlotBall. We had a lot of success getting the CBs to make a tricky pass through into the CM to breakthrough the lines and they are doing everything to cut that off.
Some sloppy play otherwise has stopped the flow of the game. A good job they're not really threatening.

Duran also appears to be the second coming of the 'impact sub'. In his three sub appearances so far this season, he's scored the winner for us in all three. And can't forget the two sub goals he scored at the back end of last season vs Liverpool to rescue a crucial draw for us that basically confirmed Champions League football.
Was surprised to see he’s number 9.
Didn’t he spend Summer on social media saying he was going to West Ham?
Clunge
16-09-2024, 11:01 AM
He was angling for a move as he's always going to butt up against Watkins in the pecking order. But West Ham cooled on him, as did Chelsea. And so he's had to lump it. And I'm delighted he's not sulking. Those goals have already put millions on our asking price if anyone comes knocking.

Watched the second half of Bologna v Shakhtar, in my search for interesting football. This was of course ghastly fare, with two very ordinary sides each happy to feign injury and run down the clock for a tame goalless draw.
It did however give some food for thought about Shakhtar. On the pitch they are more or less what they have always been: some of the better Ukrainian players, with a squadron of Brazilians to provide the 'quality', even if there isn't quite the depth that they used to have ten or more years ago. Their away kit, which they were wearing in this one, nods pretty unsubtly to the national flag (of Ukraine), even though their city is in a declared independent republic and is de facto run by Russia. Presumably none of the players or staff have been anywhere near Donetsk in years. God knows where they play their league games, but their CL home games are going to be at Schalke's ground. Yet they just seem to potter along as always. They seemed to have about 50 fans in the 'away end' for this one, none of whom had any Shakhtar colours but just Ukrainian national garb, so presumably just emigrés or general football fans.
What is the future for that? Do they turn into the first club that just exists outwith its declared locus, powered on by branding and history alone? It might be a long wait for Zelensky's boys to liberate and rebuild the Donbass stadium. Can they just carry on like this forever? Will that encourage Americans to rip English clubs out of their locations? I can't help but wonder.

Celtic v Slovan Bratislava. The former look quite good, the only good news about that is my brother's wedding is coming up and although the bride is Welsh, somehow her family is packed full of Celtic fans so I can make small talk saying that Arne Engels looks quite good and how is Callum McGregor still playing. Lovely to see the Vladimir Weiss/Vladimir Weiss coach/player duo still going strong for the away side. The playing half of the duo getting roundly booed because he played 23 games for Rangers about 15 years ago. He also looks completely shite.

Sounds like excellent tournament football from Arsenal. Imagine giving Southgate 8 games to finish in the top 24 of 36. Imagine.
Brest 2-1 ahead with ten minutes to go, they are absolutely dogshit but the vibes are with them. Their journeyman beanpole target man very much MoM, having set up the second goal when it bounced off his back. They are also playing in Guingamp's stadium, it turns out, which makes me wonder how shit theirs must be. Sturm Graz have endless Habsburg type people in midfield and brought on a 20 year old Scot at right back. They should be the better team but aren't, because of the vibes. The vibes are undefeated.

Was looking up to see why they got rid of Moyes as I couldn't remember (seems it was his choice to leave) and saw this on his Wikipedia page:
In April 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Moyes accepted a 30% cut to his salary as West Ham looked to retain jobs allowing them to pay 100% of non-playing staff salaries. He left London during the pandemic and worked in his home village in Lancashire delivering fruit and vegetables to those in need.
What a nice man.

Yes, I'd tell professional referees if you're going to commit to not getting things right when one of the players tries to smash a players ankle to bits and you're too much of a pussy to actually do anything about it then you have to keep your card in your pocket when the guys teammate calls you a bald cunt.

We're in a time where my own team dominate games but can't finish and also insist on playing out from the keeper (very badly) and losing 1-0, so to see a good old school parking of the bus is quite welcome.

In answer to this, I have various kids at various points in the state education system, and there seems to be a broad-based antipathy towards any sort of normal sport in PE and football in particular appears to be persona non grata number one in the eyes of the PE curriculum.
