Anyone done any digging in to their sordid pasts? Any secrets?

Apparently my mum's side goes back to James Stewart (half brother of Mary Queen of Scots) but they are all a bunch of fucking raving lunatics so could be nonsense. I don't have enough info yet to do that side but my dad's side is great because it's mostly English the records are superb. There's a bit of Irish that only goes back to 1800s but apart from that I got all the way back to 1450s. There's knights, barons, lords, ladies etc. V interesting but nothing standout.

I'm interested in my history because of my upbringing and want to understand how such horrible people came together to create me.

Yeah got to 1600s I think. Absolutely nothing interesting. Literally Yorkshire 4 Life. Not even any Irish.

So is mine but has a number of interesting characters (in name only). There's a few anomalies like some French and Scottish chucked in randomly in the 1600s but I think I'd need to timeline the world events at the time to make sense of it. I know on Ancestry you can 'hire an expert' but it'll probably cost a fortune.

The AI features of them finding likely relatives is a god send too, you basically just need enough info to get you started and it does the rest.

Yeah my sister got back to the 18th century. A murderer and an eccentric who collected skulls and had Stephen Fry at his funeral were the two highlights.

I tried years ago, but hit a roadblock shortly after my Maternal grandad. I can't really do anything with my dad's side after they disowned him for marrying a halfcaste, and I know basically nothing about them. I did have a cousin from that side reach out once, so that could have been a potential source of info, but I don't really want to open that can of worms.

We had some disownment on my mam's side. My dad's lot are all working class Yorkshiremen or something. No pig farmers but no royal ties, either.

I was told there's some German on one side so I've went with that without ever checking. Seems a good fit.

Anyone had any luck with tracing WW2 service records? I have been trying to find my great grandad's, I don't have his service number but know his full name and date of birth, I also have a couple of medals he got. He isn't showing up on the national archive but apparently they haven't uploaded them all yet, I mainly want it for a complete picture as I suspect there were other medals sold off in the past :moop:

You can request it from the MoD: https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-records-of-service

Thanks, I don't have his death certificate but hopefully given he was born in 1920 common sense will apply.
