The Olympics being this summer kinda passed me by.

- Paris 2024 will feature the debut of breakdancing
- The Games will be the first to feature identical number of athletes between men and women #MeToo
- The Paris Olympics are expected to cost €8.3 billion
- The surfing events to take place in Tahiti

The Netherlands sending a bloke convicted a raping a 12yr old girl is a bold selection choice (he was 19).

Somone's been vandalising the French trains by setting fire to shit. Hopefully it's either Just Stop Oil or those anti-tourist mobs that are all the rage in Europe at the moment.

It won't be Just Stop Oil. It's far too coordinated and sensible a target. If someone throws soup at the Louvre, we'll know it's them.

I saw a story about these protests the other day. I kind of get it in places like Barcelona, but it makes little sense in these little Greek islands covered in nothing but hotels. Do they not want jobs?

Tourism is the only thing stopping Spain from being a properly third world country, as opposed the borderline third world country it is. You should see the pay levels over there.

From the few pictures I've seen it's really over the top in terms of numbers, to the point where the infrastructure of the islands is on the brink of collapse. Also has a negative effect on the environment so it could be short-term gain leading to a long-term loss.

Short term gain and long term loss is the western economy in a nutshell.

The Boulder/Lead combined Climbing event starts a week on Monday with men's and women's events on successive days culminating in the finals on the Friday and Saturday. There is also speed climbing which I don't really care about but I think Samuel Watson has a chance of breaking the world record which currently stands at 4.798 seconds.

Here's a preview of the combined:

Men's:

Sorato Anraku is my (and most people's) favourite for the gold, of the two events he's the best at Boulder and top 3 in Lead (he won both of the individual world cups this year). It is a fairly high variance sport and a very competitive field so it could go many ways. There's chasing pack of 7-8 athletes who all stand a chance if things fall their way.

The structure of competitive climbing is the athletes have to climb routes that they haven't seen before, so there is a lot of pressure on the route-setters to get the level of difficulty right as well as challenge them in a breadth of styles. Athletes tend to specialise in either one of Lead or Boulder, so for instance a relatively easy Boulder round that a lot of people can score well in will play into the hands of the many lead specialists (easy Lead rounds are less common). People like Toby Roberts, Dohyun Lee, Jakob Schubert, Alberto Gines Lopez, Alex Megos and Adam Ondra have a chance at gold if that happens.

On the other hand, we could see Sorato with a massive advantage going into the Lead round, such that only an unlucky slip would knock him off the top spot.

Going with a top 5 of:
Sorato Anraku (JAP)
Jakob Schubert (AUT)
Toby Roberts (GBR)
Alberto Gines Lopez (ESP)
Alex Megos (GER)

Women's:

Janja Garnbret has got to be one of the most dominant athletes in world sport and one of the most certain bets for gold at the games. It's an extremely strong field but she is head and shoulders above the rest. There will be a great battle for the next two spots on the podium. Look out for Ai Mori who is one of my absolute favourite climbers to watch, she has a tiny stature and always seems to find the most bizarre way of getting herself up the wall. GB's Erin McNiece has had a real breakout season and, on recent form, has an outside shot at a surprise medal.

Top 5:
Janja Garnbret (SVN)
Brooke Raboutou (USA)
Jessica Pilz (AUT)
Ai Mori (JAP)
Miho Nonaka (JAP)

An Australian field hockey player has opted to amputate part of his finger to compete at the Paris Olympics.

Matt Dawson badly broke a digit on his right hand during team training in Perth two weeks ago, and recovery from surgery to repair it would have taken months.

So, the 30-year-old decided to have the finger removed from the knuckle up in order to take part in his third Games, shocking his team-mates and coach.

He will take to the field with the Kookaburras as they face Argentina on Saturday, just 16 days after he was injured.

Dawson has told media the break was so bad that he passed out when he saw his finger in the changing room. He thought his Olympic dream was over.

He urgently consulted a plastic surgeon who said that even with surgery to repair the finger - and the long recovery time - it may not regain full function. But if it was amputated, he could be back playing in 10 days.

Despite being warned by his wife not to do anything "rash", Dawson says he made his "informed" decision that same afternoon.

Fucking nuts.

In a few years, assuming no significant injuries (which is somewhat of a big ask for players of his height), he'll be dominating the league. He's not Jokic levels yet, but he's getting there.

Greece-Canada (or Giannis vs SGA I guess) starting now which should be good fun.

It's a weird FIBA thing. Slovenia had an American who hadn't even played in Slovenia in their roster. I don't see the point. In our case, it's also a bit weird because I don't think Walkup adds much to the squad.

The Biles beam routine just now was an interesting piece of broadcasting, with the analyst breaking down the brilliance of the routine completely dispassionately, calling her 'this gymnast' just like all the others and describing why she was better than them, but all the while being shouted over by Matt Baker with meaningless words like INSPIRING and BACK WHERE SHE BELONGS and so on. Athletes are not allowed just to be athletes anymore, there was a real visceral desperation by MB to seize the mic and get the narrative stuff going.

On the flipside I thought it was particularly cringeworthy for Balding to compare Peaty's reaction to getting silver to that of the footballers who pretty much instantly bin their silver medals. Now, I'm not a massive fan of the fact that they do that so obviously straight away, but there is no real comparison and trying to draw one felt a bit of a cheap shot.

Three observations:

1) You can tell the difference between the teenagers who are doing this for a bit of a laugh and seem totally unmoved by the pressure and the veterans who know that this is probably their last chance and have sponsorships/livelihoods riding on their performance in what is a very punishing format.

2) How are they brushing off all these falls?

3) I'm glad the commentators are people who know and love the sport but them going OHHHHH WHATTT?? to every trick makes it quite hard to know what is actually an above average effort
