Religious nut.

She writes her favourite verses in a journal after each jump, as well as ranking them.

Did the triathlon happen btw? Did anyone die in the filthy water?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/articles/cgerrl2w19ko

Belgium have pulled out of the Olympic mixed relay triathlon at Paris 2024 after one of their athletes fell ill.

Claire Michel competed in the women's triathlon on Wednesday, finishing 38th.

De Standaard, one of Belgium's biggest newspapers, is reporting that the 35-year-old has contracted E coli but BBC Sport has not been able to verify this claim.

And it begins.

That American winning the women's pedalbiking is quite the surprise.

The way she did it was double brilliant as well. Not only just launching and having the rest of them looking at each other as she blazed off, but also seemingly having no idea where the finish line was and looking like she was going to just keep TT'ing it into the crowd at the end.

Waffdon
04-08-2024, 10:48 PM
I just realised Lyles was the guy who wound up the entire NBA last year. I take back my displeasure of you winning, GOAT.

Pepe

but also seemingly having no idea where the finish line was and looking like she was going to just keep TT'ing it into the crowd at the end.

Not sure if she was very confused, very shocked, or what, but she did not celebrate for like five minutes.

Why all the Noah Lyles hate? Genuine question as I haven't seen any athletics coverage - has he been a bit an a numpty?

He's a bit of a hero of mine for simply causing the entire NBA community to cry hysterically for correctly calling out the "World Champs" shite.

Jimmy Floyd
05-08-2024, 10:04 AM
I thought the whole point of a triathlon was that you have to actually do all the sports required for the distance required, rather than getting sucked along.

I suppose in the Olympics they're trying to engineer close finishes for TV.

Can anyone figure out what the yellow/green colour coding means in the records section?

I think the yellow is that individuals fastest time. Not sure about the green.

Sir Andy Mahowry
05-08-2024, 10:34 AM
Yellow means they've got other times in the 25 with green meaning that's their only time.

Yellow could also mean their fastest.

SvN
05-08-2024, 10:37 AM
Yep, that's it. Yellow is their fastest time, white is their other times that are still within the top X, green are their only entries.

Cheers.

Jimmy Floyd
05-08-2024, 10:48 AM
It's starting to become ridiculous how much mention is being made (on the Beeb, but possibly everywhere) of athletes' dead parents. Give it up will you.

Jimmy Floyd
05-08-2024, 11:32 AM
Something was very off in that women's beam final. Everyone including Biles fell off the beam, the judges took about five times as long to produce Biles's score as anyone else's, and then when the Brazilian went clear at the end the commentators expected her to win gold yet she was given no medal at all.

Judged sports are the pits really.

How was that shooting woman allowed to be robbed in plain sight by the judges? It's their only function.

Pepe
05-08-2024, 04:08 PM
There is absolutely no reason why that decision shouldn't have been reversed.

Pepe
05-08-2024, 04:11 PM
As for gymnastics, it is one of the top dog sports, so it is hard to argue against its inclusion, but the scoring is some bollocks. At least in diving the scores from each judge are published and there is a method to get rid of the biased ones. In gymnastics you just get one number and that's it.

Jimmy Floyd

I wouldn't get excited about world records, they've made the velodrome 1m higher than at any other event so the sprinters have an extra metre to plunge into, there will be tens of world records.

Golds though, lovely.

05-08-2024, 08:12 PM
Did I hear rightly that Duplantis uses a longer pole than anyone else in the pole vault? Is that a legit thing?

More than likely yes.

You don't use just one pole when vaulting. They'll swap in and out the length to suit their style/how high the bar is etc etc.

As he vaults higher than anyone, I'd imagine he uses the BIG poles for the final few jumps.

He also uses a STIFFER pole I believe than anyone else as it suits his technique.

How does one get into Olympic 3v3 basketball? Are these pros that were barely not good enough for the real team so they do this instead or is it an entirely different crowd? Judging by how many whites I see, I am guessing it is like ultimate frisbee or disc golf and real ballers would never be seen playing that shit.

3x3 is great. Arguably much more of a spectacle than 5x5. Although I must say they are generally better to watch live, in person, then on TV. Get some BBQ going, decent music, it's a bit more of an entertainment event, than purely a sport. And the games shorter with less fucking breaks.

Top 8 from the combined semis qualify for the finals (where scores are wiped and new routes are set), boulder element has already taken place.

GB's Toby Roberts looked good, and Hamish McArthur has a half chance of being a surprise finalist. Erin McNiece will be right on the bubble for a spot in the final. Molly Thomspon-Smith is an excellent lead climber but has a broken toe or something and had a rubbish round this morning.

Watching Taekwondo and there was a Mexican (who is World Champ) against a Tunisian.

The Tunisian was winning but the Mexican mounted a comeback and was leading with a second to spare. She then walked backwards out of the ring as she thought she was on 3 penalty points not 4. She was on 4 though and backing out picked up her 5th and she got DQ'd.

I actually agree that it is a bit shit when they make the boulders too hard, which they did in the semi. Lead is generally the best spectacle imo because the scoring is intuitive and it's the one where the difficulty of what they're doing is clearest.

All to play for in the lead round which starts in half an hour. Pre-event favourite Sorato Anraku won the boulder round but I think he would have wanted a bit more separation between himself and the field. I think Toby Roberts has the slight upper hand now and Colin Duffy has a good chance of gold as well. Could even see someone like Adam Ondra or Jakob Schubert claw themselves onto the podium despite poor boulder rounds, if there's a big filter that a lot of people fall at sub-50, and they get a top.

Jimmy Floyd

Are these lads all tiny or just incredibly wiry? It looked to be an advantage in the bouldering to have a bit of extra height.

hfswjyr
09-08-2024, 10:33 AM
The beauty about climbing is there are advantages and disadvantages for height. Extra reach can be super helpful in some instances, but some moves need compression and a low centre of gravity.
The setters of the boulder problems play a huge role in how the climbs and results play out.

As a (shit) boulderer, I enjoyed the bouldering sections the most. Really interesting to see how even the worlds best can struggle to figure out the beta (solution).

Minor celebrity status awaits him.

It's partly a style thing, he climbs very slowly. He has monster muscular endurance so he can afford to hang about in positions that would be inefficient for others and it makes him very secure. He always looks like he's completely gassed and then manages to do another 10 moves.

This is perfect for lead climbing though it makes certain climbs like the gymnastics style last one of the boulder round much harder.

It's a great example of middle-aged TV executives (or whoever makes these decisions at the IOC) being lazy, overpaid idiots. You want to attract young viewers to the Olympics, you don't need to put stupid non-sports in that about 1% of that demographic actually like. You need to spend money (sorry, lads) on making a brilliant TV broadcast of the countless actually good sports that you already have. Then if an actually popular sport (like climbing) appears then go for it.

Look at how English football turned it around between 1989 and 2000 for all you need to know.

Lofty

They could have done ballroom which is actually hard and requires fitness, like a human dressage. Plus unlike just doing random meme shit everyone has to go with a set pattern rule set dependent on the dance they are performing. You could argue THE YOUTH wouldn't have it but Strictly and it's imitators are huge on TV so I'm sure it would have an audience.

In this article, I analyse how bodily potential is culturally regulated in Sydney’s breakdancing
(breaking) scene through drawing both on my breakdancing practice and interviews conducted
with prominent figures in this scene. I critically examine my lived experiences as one of only a
few female breakdancers (“b-girls”) in Sydney through analytic autoethnography, and use the
theoretical tools of Deleuze and Guattari to unpack and challenge normative gendered narratives. With breakdancing culturally inscribed as masculine (“b-boying”) and its conventions
interlocking with broader patriarchal restrictions that inhibit female participation and bodily
expression, I argue that the Sydney breaking scene is both a site of transgression and regression for the female body. This paradox confronting the b-girl sees her participation as “othered”,
while also challenging normative assumptions of gender. Through situating specific practices of
breaking within broader Australian culture and gender norms, I examine how the performances
of b-girls and b-boys in Australia disrupt the stability of binary logic on which the organization
of bodies is so heavily reliant and, in doing so, allow for the experience of breaking as a site of
“pure” difference.

https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Rachael-Gunn-2/publication/305519064_Don't_Worry_it's_Just_a_Girl_Negotiating _and_Challenging_Gendered_Assumptions_in_Sydney's_ Breakdancing_Scene/links/5e1ea5cca6fdcc904f7055bc/Dont-Worry-its-Just-a-Girl-Negotiating-and-Challenging-Gendered-Assumptions-in-Sydneys-Breakdancing-Scene.pdf
