Asia Cup would usually be some good viewing at work but because they've sold out to the sand crew, many games are on a night so it'll clash with AFCON, and there's only one winner there.

The amount of football over the next month, buzzing

Fancy Hezbollah to get something today against Qatar.

AC Notes:

- Only Japan and SK can surely win. Iran have a fucking idiot in charge and everyone else doesn't have the talent to compete. Uzbekistan are the up and comers but maybe coming a little too early for their young talent.

- Because of the above, it may be a very competitive affair with some nice results for minnow nations. Do like the idea of Palestine possibly going deep too a la Iraq 2007.

AFCON notes:

- Senegal and Ivory Coast only sides that look like they can compete with the North African brotherhood of Algeria, Egypt and Morroco. Hopefully Egypt storm it though for Mo.

- Hopefully the football isn't as god awful as 2021.

I am quite interested to see if Afcon is going to see a few sides attempt the modern style with the high press and whatnot. I can't think of anything less suited for African conditions than a high intensity running and quick tempo short passing game. So I imagine it will still be a clogfest, but with the usual points of difference that make it such a fun tournament.

Hang on, is Onana in the Cameroon squad? Is he just sacking off their opening game for United's game this weekend or is he in the throes of one of those Cameroonian retirements that seem to affect a lot of their players?

Jimmy Floyd
12-01-2024, 06:09 PM
The former. I don't think he's played for them since flouncing out of the last World Cup because Rigo asked him to kick it long. Clearly just thinks he's bigger than playing for them.

Sir Andy Mahowry

He apparently was planning on playing for United then flying and playing for Cameroon.

He's now decided to play for United at the weekend, will skip the first Cameroon game and then fly out.

It really is noticeable how much the west African crowd loves a skill move, regardless of outcome. No time for the collective over there, it's all about individual expression. The opposite of the folks across the desert.

Of course Egypt are going to go out in the group stages and Salah is back before the end of the month

Jimmy Floyd
14-01-2024, 06:54 PM
Salah has been awful, although it looks as though they're going to salvage something with a late penalty.

niko_cee
14-01-2024, 08:34 PM
Of course Salah would score that penalty.

Isn't he always pretty terrible for Egypt? Whenever I've watched them it's been the likes of Trezeguet carrying the main threat.

Manc
14-01-2024, 08:42 PM
Egypt spending more time in the barbers than on the training pitch.

Jimmy Floyd
14-01-2024, 08:43 PM
Salah's penalty clouted the post pretty hard but enough angle to go in on the other side.

Chris Hughton's Ghana now stinking the place up, despite firing in an equaliser just now that was VAR'd on the old line of sight chestnut.

Oooooo, I didn't realise Avram Grant was here.

Edit: Holy shit, Gael Kakuta too. What a throwback.

Gael Kakuta currently playing his club football alongside Andy Carroll.

Sir Andy Mahowry
17-01-2024, 08:23 PM
Oh dear DR Congo.

Jimmy Floyd
17-01-2024, 08:25 PM
Kakuta was coming through during the period when I was going to Chelsea quite a lot, and he was one of those few young players who was genuinely thrilling to watch. Tiny little bloke darting in every direction like a flea. You could see why they were willing to get a transfer ban to get their mits on him. Guess it didn't work out because he was ultimately not strong enough physically.

Zambia are Afcon royalty, DRC are always about 500% less than the sum of their parts, and their parts are not too hot these days either.

That however is a nice goal.

Manc
17-01-2024, 08:25 PM

Sir Andy Mahowry

Although that wasn't a bad pass by him.

Jimmy Floyd
17-01-2024, 08:31 PM
That's a classic AFCON goal. No tournament like it.

This is the best one for years, based on the first round of games. Teams are actually going for it full throttle and the 'smaller' nations have no fear. Refereeing not as catastrophic as usual yet either.

I see the Zambia goal yesterday has really kicked off the minstrelsy. Got people who wouldn't be able to differentiate between Libya and Labia sharing it with "I love AFCON football :D".

On the AC front, it's been the usual load of entertaining matches with minnows continuing their development but still struggling to score so little interest until end of group stages. We could well be left with the exact same 16 as 2019.

24-01-2024, 04:45 PM
Nope.

If Tanzania beat the Doctors and Namibia draw (or Tunisia win by a goal I think) then they'd be out.

You are right. My main point was that "faint hopes" is clearly wrong (Tanzania are 6/1).

Jimmy Floyd
24-01-2024, 06:15 PM
Interesting thing about these games (0-0 in both into the second half) is that only one of the four teams, Tunisia, needs a goal.

Jimmy Floyd
24-01-2024, 06:59 PM
0-0 now suits both Morocco and Zambia so you'd expect that's what it will be.

11/4 the draw if anyone fancies the cynic's approach.

Sir Andy Mahowry
24-01-2024, 07:00 PM
So Ivory Coast now need Morocco to win and Tanzania to draw or lose for them to go through.

Jimmy Floyd
24-01-2024, 10:51 PM
To play Senegal, which is very much a b-tier version of being through.

Very good last 16 draw in that all games should be close on paper.

Sir Andy Mahowry

Have they announced their new manager?

Jimmy Floyd
24-01-2024, 11:19 PM
Emerse Fae, which is a name to remember if anyone ever asks for a list of all Ivorian PL players in the trivia thread. Eight games for Reading in 2008.

Don
25-01-2024, 06:45 PM
Some very funky business going on in AC, either SK are throwing games or the AFCON shit-for-brains approach to international football is spreading. Or, much more likely, Klinsmann is fucking incompetent.

Either way, knockouts set, proper football begins now. Good to see Indonesia make it too given their size and passion for the game.

BBC Three also showing the game. A much more relaxed vibe.

I'm probably in a minority of one but that kind of impact on a goalkeeper should be an automatic red card, no matter how accidental. If you're not in control of your own movement and it leads to a dangerous impact at that kind of force, that's on you.

Jimmy Floyd
27-01-2024, 09:54 PM
A mixed day for Cameroonian managers.

Nigeria look much better in this game. Might be that they've finally found the formula. Lookman a key part of it, Osimhen is far better when he has someone up there to link up with.

AC started properly today. Tajiks ended a fine showing by going out to an uninspiring Jordan. Aussies then tried theif usual shitfest of putting a well organised bunch of 185cm+ gammons into defence and looking to hit on the break. Almost worked a treat but South Korea's quality finally told with a last min equaliser and victory in ET.

Tomorrow sees Japan rape us in 5 different ways. They seem to have kicked out Ito as he got accused of sexual assault or some shit too and Hatate is missing through injury but we've got Taremi out and a dogshit team in general.
