Should have been at least two occasions of ref to the VAR monitor late on.

Villa played well for 30-35 mins but have reverted to anti-football early. They should go back to how they started.

Goal chalked off for offside despite it being a Villa player knocking it to him. Make that the 3rd wrong VAR call today.

How is that not a goal? A Villa player played it backwards... like it wasn't even close.

I'd say Leeds still have a chance. West Ham have a European final to get ready for and are now basically safe. You also have Spurs on the last day and it's Spurs ffs.

Leicester now need at least a point at Newcastle to avoid Everton and Bournemouth playing out a bore draw.

Time wasting [led from the front by the heroic efforts of Arsenal with their shitty little huddles and Newcastle in a more standard fashion] really seems to have become a massive thing this season, but I don't know if it is just more obvious or is genuinely becoming more of a 'problem'. First half time wasting feels like it has properly established itself as a go to tactic.

That decision to rule out Gakpo's goal would be baffling if it wasn't so perfectly emblematic of how VARs all too often get obsessed with some minor nuance of a law whilst missing the wider context of the game. Konsa was clearly trying to both block and play the ball, probably not in the way it ended up going, but that doesn't make it unintentional. I'm not even sure why that rule exists, but if that is the threshold for unintentional then god hep us.

It was the same thing earlier in the season in [I think] the game between City and Everton, when one of the Everton defenders made an excellent diving save and the VAR was so obsessed with whether the arm was in a natural position as the player fell to the ground that he missed the fact that it was a full-on save and was clearly a handball/penalty. The arm was in a perfectly natural position, if you are trying to fall on a ball and stop it with your hand. No penalty.

Keita and Chamberlain missing out on the last game at home yesterday with injury was a fitting legacy for both.

Chamberlain I can forgive, he played 42 games [basically 30% of his appearances over his 6 years] that first season before dying against Roma, but Keita's clocking in 129 in all comps [out of what must be over 300 possible] without ever seemingly having been badly injured is ridiculous. What a sack of shite. Thiago's disappeared off the face of the planet too [probably not a bad thing], no wonder Liverpool's midfield is a bit ropey, seems to be a major signing blind spot zone. You'd think it would be easier to find players who can 'just run'.

You'd think it would be easier to find players who can 'just run'.

I think Oxlade explains the latter part of that. Before he arrived it was very much the story of industrious but technically a bit meh midfielders. Emre Can, Milner, Henderson and Lucas.
The signing of Oxlade to play in the midfield three showed him you could fit a more technically gifted, but less industrious player in there full time. I'm sure he would have tried Coutinho there more but this was around the time he was trying to slither away. Lallana was great in the role too, but was rarely fully fit.

The injury ruined him, but since he's tried to replace him with something similar. Keita, Thiago and Harvey Elliott are all attempts to get that kind of player in there. As the club has been busy trying to find that player, they've let slip the other positions where you do need the guys who run all game.
Whether the upturn in Trent has affected THE PLAN in any way remains to be seen, but leaving a gaping hole at RB in every game is not the way.

Don

Last time a team in 18th managed 40+ was West 'Am when they still had a Defoe / Di Canio strikeforce in 02/03. I think this is fairly standard and 40 was always the "if you get that you'll definitely be safe" rather than really needing it to stay up.

I saw Ayling's post match interview and he just outright admitted none of them are anywhere near as fit as they were a couple of years ago and it's hurting us. And that's the captain (effectively anyway, Cooper isn't about enough) saying that.

Can’t believe it’s taken until now for Lampard to start Chukwuemeka/Madueke/Mudryk/Hall in the same team. Should have been starting the majority since he took over the massive weapon

Edit: in saying that, not a defensively aware midfielder in that team. The spaces will be hilarious

phonics

Only basing it off the Arsenal match but that Madueke looks like a really, really good signing. Once that team has a bit of stability he's going to be great.

It’s a shame Azpilicueta is playing as I reckon that would be one of the youngest starting XI’s in the leagues history. Only him and Kepa are over the age of 23.

Average age of 22.1 if James was fit

Waffdon

To be fair, Chelsea could have had 2 as well. But to answer your question, under Lampard they do, yes. Midfield all be ‘8s’ doesn’t help with the open spaces but you can’t play Chalobah/Fofana together as both too aggressive and always leaving each other alone.

Ian

I know chucking money at this game isn’t a guarantee of success but how can you spend the amounts they have and look so desperately poor? I'm sure the resident Chelsea fans know more but supposedly it is a combination of having 3 million players, managerial changes, also Boehly trying to run it like a yank franchise, going into the changing room after losses to bollock them etc.

When you bring in a lot of players in a short space of time they need consistency and a clear plan to settle. Between Tuchel leaving, the attempt at Potterball and then Super Frank, they've had nothing close to it.

Forest eventually got it to click, but they didn't try chopping and changing everything.

There is no single explanation for us being shit, but the biggest factor is a lack of serious leaders in the dressing room. It's a weak dressing room full of thickos, and that requires a big personality as manager. Tuchel was that but the yanks don't recognise this kind of nuance, they are working off moneyball.xls. Potter is a good coach but a small personality and was doomed by that. Lampard is irrelevant because the season was too far gone by that point and they had all lost interest. I mean, look at Joao Felix. Personality of a wet bun.

No idea if Poch is the answer. Should be better than this season's managers, but I don't think we'll be any better than maybe 8th next year, we just don't have the players. Granit Xhaka has more leadership in his ballsack than we have in the whole squad.

The size of the squad is an issue in of itself. Not to somehow about Arsenal but I think Arteta got the squad down to like 16 non u18 players by the time we became an actual unit. You can be a leader of men but you can't lead a team that has so many players you have 2 dressing rooms and 3 different training matches going on at once.

However the team has absolutely reeked of late era Wenger for years now. Has been since 2019 they've felt soft but the demise was coming before that. Went from having these immense midfielders and every player felt like they were 6'2 brick shithouse mentality monsters then one day you blinked and it was Kovacic and Ross Barkley.

Yeah, I was thinking this. I know they 'relaxed' the interpretation that led to any minor contact with a hand in the previous 5 minutes disallowing a goal [Firmino v Spurs] but it seems a bit of a stretch to say his hand is in a natural position there and he hasn't gained an advantage, even if he squares it. I don't know if they are getting confused with the clarification that ruled out goals that went in off hands even if entirely accidental/non-deliberate, or if what was being suggested is the rule.
