The name of the town/city will suffice, I guess.

Mongolia? Northern China? Kazakhstan? Turkmenistan?
One of the Russia/Asia border states.

Yes, one of the bolded 3. Name of the city, please.....

Astana? Ulaanbaatar? Ashgabat?
If it's not one of them, I'm out.

My first guess was Ulanbator or however you spell it. Silly alphabet central.

I’m not sure how anyone would know.
I knew immediately it was a Soviet satellite. I would have guessed Ukraine if it wasn't in ruins, so it had to be one of the Asian ones.
Astana, lads.

Wide roads, square buildings and not a lot happening is so Soviet. That probably stretches as far as the shit parts of Berlin.

I worked with a Kazahk lass. Most of the office thought she was Polish. When you get to that end of the Soviet bloc, half of them are Asian anyway.

Correct coastline, wrong part of it.

Only pier I know down there is Brighton, but there's no way it's that undeveloped. Guessing it's Cornwall or Devon.
Jimmy Floyd
13-02-2023, 11:26 AM
It can't be south coast, as the land appears to bend back the other way in the background. I thought Scarbados but I've been there and it doesn't have a pier like that.
The plants and buildings look more southern than northern, though. Devon? I dunno.
John Arne
13-02-2023, 12:10 PM
Oops... I meant correct coastline as in the correct country/island.
It's the north west.

Looks a bit like Venice, except you'd have boats there and not cars.
Don't know how this will go. I just loaded up a game on GeoGuessr and copied five rounds.
Guess the country (and city if you can).

Basically correct, except all the gondolas have been replaced by white vans.

2: Belarus?
No. It’s a bit of a trick I suppose, hence why the flag is so prominently displayed.
Spikey M

Number 4 is Belgium. Presumably Brussels.
Number 4 is Belgium. Presumably Brussels.
Belgium yes. Brussels no.
It reminds me of Blankenberge or Brugge, the only two Belgian cities I've ever been to.
Spikey M
13-02-2023, 04:40 PM
Antwerp? Gent? Bruges? I don't know, Ypres? Is that even a place? I'm pretty sure it was just a German trench.
There’s a big clue in the picture. I’ll hold off giving the answers for a few hours.
Jimmy Floyd
13-02-2023, 04:44 PM
Presumably it's Namur since it says that on the building.
5 must be Kyrgyzstan. 2 Bulgaria? 1 feels like Latin American but could equally be Spain or Italy.
mugbull
13-02-2023, 04:51 PM
#1 feels like one of the Caucasian semi-autonomous states, like Chechnya. Let's say Grozny
Jim is correct with R4 and R5.

Spikey M

2 could be anywhere from Belarus to Belgrade to Mongolia. It's been quite the day for non-descript post-Soviet shitholes.
Post-Soviet shithole is what Round 2 strives to be.
Spikey M

Has anyone actually said Russia? Let's give it a go. Russia.
No but you're getting closer. I don't know how well known this place is. They want to be Russia and their biggest football team pulled off a massive upset in the Champions League a couple of years ago.

Moldova.

Waffdon
13-02-2023, 05:10 PM
I’m pretty sure I’ve had that exact same round on GG for #3 on the famous landmarks round
Waff is right. The flag you see is Transnistria. But if you wanted to go all UN then the correct answer is Moldova.
Only R3 left to go.

#3 had me thinking South America at first, but the little morose apartment blocks peeking up over the foreground buildings have me thinking Muslim. A Muslim country that tried to build up some European-looking buildings at one time or another. Casablanca?
It's not Casablanca. They're actually not Muslim at all.
A clue: in all other rounds guessed correctly so far, there's been a flag in the picture to help.

I was going to say Split or some other ancient Balkan location. Know nothing about such places.

Oh yeah, flag right in the corner.
I got incredibly good at geoguessr at one point, but then they changed it so that you had to commit to doing it all the time and I couldn't be arsed. There used to be (might still be) a football stadia round which I was ludicrously good at.

I never do the competitive stuff for that reason. Daily challenge because the wife likes to play along and then I usually do streaks or whatever community maps are popular.

The ones I enjoyed the most were when they pitched you into a nondescript forest/plains in the middle of fucking nowhere and you had to scan along for miles trying to find any sort of tiny clue. Proper brain therapy.
Having a go now and all the old tricks are coming back - look for web addresses on vans, look at bins because they often have the local council's name on. Love it.
Shindig
13-02-2023, 06:37 PM
Aye, I backtrack to the nearest road sign and then decide where that place name/language is.
Russia is the best for that. But then also the worst because you can be proud that you figured out it was the Far East from trees and Japanese import cars but then still be 1,000 miles away.

I've remembered my password so I'm currently trying to decipher street names on mailboxes. The good thing about being dumped in a residential area is there is always estate agent signs up. Even with all that, I'm six miles out. :D
I went the pub once at my mate cracked out geoguesser. All but me and one other lad got well involved. I just don’t see the appeal.

I think 3 minutes is pretty good, forces you to sometimes make guesses based on landscape/vibes which is just as big a part of the game as other things
It is. Just ADW presents the opportunity for a regular howler which the other popular maps usually don't.

Pretty pleased with that, over 20k. Last one was especially satisfying, even if I didn't actually find the exact spot.
For Round 3 I just flew down the dirt road until I found a little compound. It had a truck with Spanish on the side and the landscape didn't look like Spain. Just took a punt somewhere in Mexico and got close enough.

You must have gone the right way then, I spent 2:50 going down the track and saw nothing bar 2 small cars.
I didn't even see cars. I thought the shrubs looked Spanish (NW of Madrid) and never saw anything to convince myself otherwise. If I saw cars I would have at least seen the licence plates weren't European and that would have pushed me to America.
