NASCAR from Chicago is worth a watch. Not only was it their first street race and therefore hilarious but someone invited probably the best tintop driver in the world at the moment so you get to hear how many times yank commentators can mis-pronounce 'van Gisbergen' as well as watch him take the entire field to school.

Track a little damp, some teams coming out in slicks with some on inters to start quali.

I imagine the inter guys will do a lap or two to try and dry the track a bit before moving to slicks before rain starts again.

Mercs struggle to get heat into the tyres enough for one lap. I think we currently have:

Red Bull driven by Max
McLaren/Ferrari/Mercedes
Williams
Aston Martin
Alpine
Haas
Alfa Romeo
Red Bull driven by Checo
Alpha Tauri.

The disparity between Verstappen and Perez is Schumacher/Irvine-esque. It was Silverstone where Schumacher broke his leg, no? Pretty much the only way to save the season from a competitive perspective, although I suppose Perez cruising to a world title would fully expose what a disaster the move to these new regs has turned into in terms of racing at the sharp end. Off the back of such a great season a few years ago as well.

That whole Stroll/Gasly battle was wall to wall lols. Well, not for Gasly, more seethes for him. Maybe the stewards knew something Gasly didn't when they didn't make Stroll give the place back [ie you're safer behind him in the minor place battles].

Foe
09-07-2023, 07:21 PM
But the whole point of Lawrence being there will be to get Lance a chance at a world championship. Surrounding him with former world champions to learn from, and get the team points, revenue, sponsorship etc. the whole point will be for eventually stroll to have improved enough and the car to be competitive enough that he has a crack.

Otherwise he’d have stuck around at Williams.

Can imagine gasly was quite pissed off too. That body check from stroll was like how I used to play toca touring cars on the original PlayStation aged 6.

niko_cee
09-07-2023, 08:41 PM
Stroll wouldn't win the world title if he swapped seats with Verstappen in this season's cars, and that's just about the most dominant car of all time. It'd be an interesting thought experiment as to whether he would finish ahead of a Verstappen piloted Aston Martin. Pretty sure he wouldn't.

Sir Andy Mahowry

About the most solid option they've got in their quest to get eyes on the team and/or off the bottom of the constructors championship (ie. become more marketable for a sale). Also the added benefit of a known yardstick with which to suss out Tsunoda if they fancy punting Checo.

Not sure it's the only advantage, as AlphaTauri is having a big restructure in 2024 and rumours have been swirling for about a year or so now that Red Bull can't be arsed with them anymore. Ricciardo makes them more appealing than Lawson.

I'll buy it. God, I'd love to own an F1 team. I'd spend all my time hunting comical sponsors that would blow up in my face, Rich Energy et al. I'd also make sure I always had a driver lineup of one dignified, long past-it veteran (think Pedro de la Rosa) and one comedy pay driver to balance the books. I'd bring in some laughable PR type, like the Mooch, to be team principal. I'd sack all the decent engineers and get crap ones to save costs. Then I'd call in a docu crew to capture the bin fire for posterity, and blame everyone else when we went out of business before Monaco. I can think of few things that would be more fun.

That would need to be Chanoch Nissany:

His only Formula One session ended in a gravel trap after a spin. Despite this, he initially complained that the car had too much grip. Nissany reportedly forgot how to remove the steering wheel from his cockpit, and would remain seated in his beached car while marshals removed it with a crane.

The very clever people who design these things have found a way to start getting around the rules to produce downforce as they always will. It's also a consequence of Mercedes having the cards 15mm further off the ground this year. You need more downforce to push them back down.

Bit less tedious then some of the races this season, plenty of fun to be had at the expense of Ferrari and Lolpine (hows that five year plan going lads, adding a couple more years are we). Not/less running in the wet is due to the ground effect, it literally fills the underside of the car with water and they float off the track. Granted it looks like they're being fannies because they also throw red flags for a bit of gravel but there is at least a reason for it. The mud flap test was also a complete and utter failure (I think the phrase they used was 'no measurable difference') so they may not be cramming that into everyone's talking points.

Lando finishing 7th in a car that was set up specifically for the rain, on a dry track is a great drive from him.

Aston stopped the rot with Fernando in 5th, but the podium looks a long, long way away for them now. Ferrari have caught them up massively and Mercedes are starting to get some clear daylight in 2nd. Max himself would still be 60 odd points clear in the constructors if they just ran the one car.

Tricky season after the summer break now. It's almost pointless to bring many more upgrades as there's little to be won, so Red Bull really could win every race in a season. I know Spa is probably the track that suits their car best, but after the rest of the field brings several upgrades, to see the next best car 32s behind still is laughable.

Gray Fox
30-07-2023, 07:35 PM
The ideal situation is to have a Max type #1 driver and you're #2 capable of mopping up 2nd place while also not causing your #1 any aggro. See also Lewis and Bottas. Seb and Webber.

When you bring in a 2nd driver who is closer in skill to your top guy(Rosberg) you get issues. The two will clash and your easy 1-2 becomes DNF.

The only reason Perez came under the cosh was because the podiums dried up.

I remember feeling this ominous about Vettel at one point though. He then went off to struggle in a Ferrari and completed his good guy arc. I wonder if we get the same from Max.

30-07-2023, 07:59 PM
