I was having a conversation with the young people at work today, and the subject got round to McDonald's. I said that the Hull McDonald's used to have an upstairs seating area, half of which was seats in a weird pirate ship surround for kids' parties and that, and they thought that I was making it up. There isn't much on Google other than a few people asking who else remembers them, so I want to know whether you ever encountered one.

That is it (thanks random woman). Fantastic. Although it's not really a pirate ship as I remembered it. Did you ever encounter the weird McDonald's boat?

I'm pretty sure I encountered that very one as a kid, at my cousin's birthday party.

There was, unfortunately, no pirate ship in the Wakefield McDonald's. There was a basketball court inside the JJB Sports though.

Wasn’t allowed into a McDonald’s till I was 12 and they’d got rid of them.

Will you have the same rule for your kid?

I don't know about pirate ship specifically, but there definitely used to be a separate themed children's party area in my local one. Like a sort of goldfish bowl in the middle of the restaurant.

All that went out with the 'I'm Lovin It' rebrand circa Blair's second term.

Nothing rebranded the concept of childhood more than getting on the internet and finding out that ballpits are all covered in child faeces.

I'll dig out the picture of me having a birthday party in Manchester next time I'm back. No pirate ship, just brought colours and one of those things you can stick your head in to pretend you're the hamburgler.

Edit, actually it was on Facebook

A building ceiling-lit like Michael Douglas is about to lose his shit in it. Proper, proper 90s.
