The window is SLAMMING SHUT. The sack race has already been won. And presumably it's Qatar's fault that it's September and I've got a United game on on a Thursday evening, for fuck's sake.

On the plus side we get a bit of respite from Romano and the gang for a bit once the window has closed again, so small mercies right?

It's all happening this month with European football back too and Erling Haaland to presumably score another twenty hat-tricks, the arsehole.

For want of somewhere better to post it I've also discovered that as well as the mighty Hamilton Academical near me (mightily overpriced tickets, more like) there is also this lot now: https://www.caledonianbraves.com/

"the first online community club in the world", with members all voting on stuff via an app. Still, tickets are a fiver a go so might go and watch them at some point

The BBC have a habit of putting Women’s football ahead of men’s on the upcoming fixtures, so that you have to go looking for the men’s games. I’ve been hard wired for twenty years to glance at it and if there’s no Premier League there assume there’s no games on.

It'll be an interesting one. At this point he's basically the champagne socialist Piers Morgan and presumably Sky put up with it because he draws viewers and hasn't said anything yet that has caused a shit storm on Twitter. This won't so I assume he'll be fine (unless he actually ends up in prison), but there'll be something he'll die on his sword over eventually that'll see to him.

We've signed 6 players.
Eriksen, Malacia, Martinez weren't in last year's team. Varane wasn't fit. Then you have the newbies in Casimero and Anthony while losing the gobshites (Pogba, Lingard, Henderson) and space takers (Mata, Matic).

Not that the management didn't play a part but there's definitely a changing of the guard.

His improvement was massively over-stated. His defending never got any better, but he learned to cross a bit and Rashford cutting in all the time allowed him an overlap (which just meant him being caught out all the time once lockdown shitball ended). Absolute pudding.

Not sure if this is related at all, but it got me thinking about being a teacher. ScousePig

Leicester looking like they'd struggle in the Championship there.

And to talk football for a minute, Sunderland have really adapted to the Championship so far. Whist it's obviously a step up from League One, and it's entertaining, the standard is bang average and as long as you have a bit of depth to your squad, you shouldn't struggle.

We played Rotherham off the park last night, and the two games we lost (Sheffield United and Norwich) we were quite unlucky. If the QPR keeper hadn't scored against us last minute, we'd be right up near the top I think.

Ollie Watkins was absolutely sensational today for us. He is one of the best hold-up strikers I've ever seen, yet he still has the pace to play off the last man and stretch teams right and left. He must cover so much ground, and he efforts bring other players into the game too. We played really well today, even if City – inevitably – made some decent chances.

Rather than recommending the on field ref to have another look, why don't they just overrule the decision when an error is made?

I prefer letting the ref having a look in theory. However, the fact they stick with the original decision so rarely it was a talking point when your man did yesterday makes me think they might as well just do that.

There'll be some bullshit about not taking away/undermining the authority of the on-field ref.

VAR is clearly a good thing in principal, it's just people assumed that if you took away the split-second half-viewed nature of the decision-making refs would make better decisions. Unfortunately it seems their incompetence was not tied to the fact they were being asked to do a difficult job.

Exactly. Nobody is happy anyway - Deccy yesterday, Brighton earlier, this one. So why not go back to the old way and have the same complaints but a less fucked up game?

I'd rather no VAR than VAR as it is now, but I think "VAR, but not totally fucking rubbish" would be my preferred option.

Ben
05-09-2022, 09:25 AM
Plus it's compulsory in schools (throughout, not just a token couple of years) in the Netherlands which helps a lot. Not sure how long it's been the case but you can probably work it out as about 50 years because the last remaining Dutch with sketchy English are all older than that.

Adramelch

All of the above is true for Greece as well, but our English is not good by any means. Obviously our language is a lot different than English which doesn't help, but I think it's also a matter of culture at some point.

The issue is the tight cunts who own the club who every year insist that they will only spend what comes in from transfer fees.

Whenever Henderson isn’t fit ‘Trent’ is exposed at right back because no one else in the squad performs his role.

This year when it was obvious we needed at least one starting central midfielder they let Mane, Origi & Minamino go and what they have bought in you can guarantee will be on lower wages as well as having quite a low net spend. The only time they have ever spent big was 2018 and that was only because of the sale of Coutinho.
