Fuck sake Ian. 4 days deep.

Made it seem like I was waiting for today intentionally with that title to do a crossover between this and the Star Wars joke.

Nailed it. I'm a genius, not a lazy forgetful twat.

Anyway, first up is City vs. Real Madrid where for fuck's sake I actually want Real to win. What a cursed fixture. All Benzema headed goals please.

Other than that I suppose the other main talking point is THE RACE FOR FOURTH. Poll assumes that Chelsea aren't fucking up hard enough to drop out of the top four altogether.

Oh, and there's also a league winner to be determined but whatever. I suppose I'm hoping for City so Liverpool don't / can't get the quadruple?

Sir Andy Mahowry

They feel like a bit of a throwback. They don't swarm you with a mad press, they don't throttle you by holding onto the ball forever. They just seem to trust that they've got the players to do the job and I love it a lot more than I wish I did.

Real Madrid's is a classic 'name on the trophy' run. Liverpool should be about 40/1 for the final.

This all started when I sat outside a budget hotel in Madrid last October and listened to four Spanish men on the next table rant to each other about how Premier League money was ruining football and Real Madrid should always be the best by right.

Kikó
05-05-2022, 07:12 AM
I went to bed at 1-0 so that's a pleasant surprise. It is all set up for Liverpool to win it all now and Guardiola to take hostages. Those Grealish chances near the end (the block and the save) turned out huge.

Benzema is by far one of my favourite players ever. Top quality old school centre forward.

Real Madrid's is a classic 'name on the trophy' run. Liverpool should be about 40/1 for the final.

I’m not sure it was offside. Certainly didn’t look it on the one angle

I thought Carvajal looked offside when the ball was played to him, but there wasn't much in the way of a replay so maybe not.

Giggles will be doing his nut with all this false writing off of Liverpool's chances. They'll probably bum Real out of existence. Salah certainly seems up for making it some sort of grudge match.

niko_cee

Although maybe that was said last time round, I dunno.

Reg

I love the Champions League (in Patrice Evra voice).

Sort of would prefer Man City to win it before Pep leaves because I find it silly how some still try and portray him as a failure.

But Real Madrid being Real Madrid amazingly doesn’t seem to get old. Some great stats from Dermot Corrigan / The Athletic:-

Camavinga showed phenomenal composure, energy and ability once more. In the 440 minutes when he has not been on the pitch against PSG, Chelsea and City, Madrid have scored five times and conceded nine. During his 160 minutes of substitute appearances in those same matches, they have scored nine and conceded just twice.

Rodrygo has also hit tremendous form just at the right moment. The young Brazilian has six goals in his last six matches in all competitions – after four in his previous 79. One of those was the late volley, from Modric’s sublime pass, which took the quarter-final against Chelsea to extra time.

Ian
05-05-2022, 10:33 AM
I love how the media do an about face after a result like that and go from fawning over Guardiola to WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING?

Caught a bit of Sky Sports yesterday where Dr Bruyne was being interviewed and they were desperately wanting him to give Guardiola sole credit for his success and he's like "Well the players also work really hard so maybe I would be successful with another manager as well" and the response was to ignore that and ask what aspect of his game.he most credits Guardiola for. Cringeworthy stuff.

Spoonsky
05-05-2022, 03:29 PM
They definitely have a collapse in them. I remember that flurry of Liverpool goals in early 2018, culminating with that Salah chip over Ederson from 40 yards.

At the same I find the revisionism after this kind of thing a little grating. City dominated for 90 minutes and should have scored multiple other chances (across both legs), Madrid hadn’t had a shot on goal until Rodrygo scored. And then absolute madness happens; but afterwards every pundit speaks as though it were somehow inevitable and Real Madrid were always looking like pulling it off. They weren’t at all, which makes it so much better.

Yevrah
05-05-2022, 03:36 PM

Madrid did have quite a few chances in the game. They just made a mess of it each time until the flurry of goals. Liverpool were never losing to City and their 10k fans in the stadium. Madrid should be able to make a game of it. Hopefully they stop playing Kroos who is utterly pointless and dreadful.

It's a great stadium and they're going to add another 11k seats. The middle screen hovering over the pitch reminds me of something in the NHL.

What do you make of the different style of atmosphere in German games? A friend has been a few times and was struck by the constant unwavering singing and lack of reactions to goals. English atmospheres maybe more rollercoasterish.

There are reactions but I'd go with that analysis. It's mostly non stop and continuous rather than spontaneous and reactionary. I went to Dortmund- Juventus years ago and Juventus pumped Dortmund but the home fans just continued at the same pace and passion throughout. Makes you think are they even watching but it makes for a good noise.

I've always had as a very niche interest in the different goal roars in different countries. In Spain (I've only been to one game there which ended 0-0) it's such a low sound that they seem to be saying gooool rather than anything like the yyyeeeeah! that is the British goal noise. Italy I think is mostly siiii with a bit of other general sounds of the Italian man mixed in.

Germany should logically be jaaaa! but I can't imagine it in my head.

The German crowd model sounds dreadful, but very much in keeping with the 'organised fun' stereotype one might imagine.

Much like 'doing the Poznan' is dreadful.

Going to the football is mostly about suffering, not we support our local team shit. It's the suffering that allows you the explosion of joy when a good thing happens. Then VAR came along and mostly fucked that up.

As a squad, I've softened a little towards City. The core that makes that team tick were assembled relatively cheaply. The Robinho's didn't land but Kompany, De Bruyne and Aguero did. And they've had some homegrown talent come through. Still, it's ran like a credit card. They're not operating at cost and they'll never make that money back on merch or global appeal.

Everyone's favourite club is never that liked. It's usually in opposition to a much bigger threat. Newcastle were it under Keegan and then our fans spent the next two decades moaning about the good old days. Liverpool did that during the title drought. Leicester might've sneaked a few seasons of good will for their rise. At the end of the day, nobody likes a monopoly. It's why Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher got so much shit.

Yeah yeah.

The problem with City [as has been an issue for most Pep teams] is that Guardiolaball is dreadful to watch for the most part so, combined with other obvious factors, there isn't much love for them. Perhaps the novelty and sheer quality of Barcelona's players made it good, but in the Munich and Manchester incarnations it's all just extremely dull crushing inevitability.

Basketball, one of the biggest sports in the US, has just 29 pro teams - and whilst there are lots of amateur leagues, there is zero focus on the sport outside of the NBA, and a little for the G-League.

Same for the other 3 sports - huge country, huge population, yet so few teams to support.

EDIT: the college system fills in some gaps, but there's still so many larger cities with no pro teams.
