He's just (probably a few hour before that quote) discovered that a man he thought was part of his family, who he has grown to trust, has in all likelihood been beating and raping his daughter. He is quite probably still trying to believe it's not true despite all evidence to the contrary. Coming to terms with something like that must be unbelievably difficult.
