View Full Version : Can you separate the art from the artist?

Was talking to someone at work today about how Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden somehow gets a pass for being as much of a bell end as Gene Simmons from Kiss and it made me think about this.

Can you personally separate the art from the artist? Can you enjoy something made by someone you dislike or still enjoy something made by someone you formally liked or is it forever tarnished?

Did you bin your Smiths t-shirt when Morrisey became a turbo cunt or does it not matter? Do you own a Gary Glitter/Rolf Harris/Lost Prophets compilation CD and regularly enjoy the films of Woody Allen and Roman Polanski or does the noncing just sour it all?

Does the severity of the offence impact the enjoyment? Differing political views at one end of the scale, mass murdered at the other perhaps?

If they're just a twat then who cares, if they are literal criminals/nonces then it gets a bit more difficult. For example Chris Benoit matches are still good but I'm not going out of my way to watch Jimmy Snuka.

I've definitely already made this thread and I'm sure it even has the same title. You bastard Lofty. :panda:

Obviously I am suffering from early onset alzheimers and my attempt to live the 'more threads' mantra is backfiring :moop:

I'm certainly finding it harder to enjoy Baz's animations after he admitted to laughing at a bloke who tried to kill himself.

Cracking thread, Lofty. Really original.

I'd still listen to an MJ song, but can't remember if he was found guilty of being a nonce or if it was just speculation.

Not guilty. Just heavily implied. Jimmy Saville was never tried either so ... y'know.

Innocent until proven guilty. :dc:

Definitely, however unfortunate that is.

Still listen to everything Ryan Adams puts out, even though he seems to a horrible human being. So I guess I fall into team Baz on this one.

Yeah I still listen to music from the 70's despite it being the decade that noncing went mainstream if im not wrong?

I still love Annie Hall even though Woody Allen is a nonce and he spends most of that film being at minimum a bit of a creep, so yeah I guess I can.
