View Full Version : Human Extinction

How will it come about? Climate change is probably the odds on fav at this point, but we've got a few other contenders. Will AI become all conquering? Are we likely to blow each other to pieces via nuclear warfare? Is Covid 19 simply an amuse-bouch and the main course much more potent? Discuss.

Asteroid, presumably.

My money is on an Asteroid. Bruce Willis won't always be here to keep them away.

Unlikely.

His posts have the same power as Bono's clicking fingers.

We have some form of control over everything in your post so I don't think it'll be any of them. They might make things uncomfortable, but for extinction to happen I reckon it would need to be something from space (meteorite or aliens) obliterating the planet.

Aliens would be interesting.

Stick a bit of Tom Jones on, job's a goodun.

I assume no-one takes any notice of that either.

I love the idea of an extra-terrestrial gamma ray burst wiping everything out with no warning on a random Tuesday afternoon or something. I think about it a lot actually.

A solar flare could do much the same thing, the fact that it hasn't happened yet tells you how unlikely it is.

Hasn't it? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordovician%E2%80%93Silurian_extinction_events)

Unlikely, yes. Leicester did win the league though.

What ever makes us extinct is going to be an uncommon occurrence.

Happened to us I mean, we know of a handful in several billion years.

Imagine War of the Worlds being stopped in its tracks by What’s New Pussycat.

I'm with Offshore, it'll be external, i.e. won't happen. Crocodiles have lasted ages and all they do is sit about in rivers looking vaguely menacing. We have internet fridges, ffs.

Looks like the Space Ants will be taking Baz, Offy and Jimmy first.

I think it will be the foreigners that end it for us.

Climate change won't do it because it hinges on supply and demand. As soon as we start dying off, the fossil fuels reduce with it.

And there will always be areas that remain habitable. I suppose it's possible that as more and more of the planet becomes uninhabitable, the population pressure along with food and water shortages could lead to some nukes getting chucked about, allowing us to compound disaster our way off the stage.

Even if nukes are chucked, enough of us would survive to have a Fallout-style post-nuclear life.

The whole planet in one fell swoop hopefully.

Don't be so pessimistic. I reckon we could do it if Russia still have a couple of Tsar Bomba's knocking about.

If covid has shown us anything it’s that anything like it will be really dull and see us sat inside.

Unless we build homes that can kill us.

Anyone see the film “blast from the past”.

Wonder if there’s any covid loons who will surface in fifteen years having survived off baked beans to discover their Bitcoin is worth zero.

On the contrary, you saw people panic with this novid which kills a tiny fraction of the population. Imagine if something turned up that was much worse. The society would collapse.

Spikey M
06-09-2021, 08:09 PM
The panic you speak of was toiletroll and pasta shortages and it turns out that was just a Pre-Brexit dry run.

My long lasting memory of the last 18 months is going to be boredom and that's sad because I enjoyed Outbreak and Contagion but now I just feel lied to.

There is a great RAND study from the sixties that worked out that a nuclear war wouldn't be as bad as everyone thought because we got over the Black Death eventually. Good to know.

At least we can be conscious clear by visiting this webpage:

Hurrah! This web page is cleaner than 85% of web pages tested

"Only 0.21g of CO2 is produced every time someone visits this web page."

That is way higher than I would have guessed and doesn't sound right to me.

"Oh no, it looks like this web page uses bog standard energy
If this site used green hosting, then it would emit 9% less CO2"

All that money donated to hosting this site and SvN has us on a bog standard energy tariff? I demand an audit.

Baz has a referral link for green energy.
