View Full Version : Plastic
2021 and you still can't move for plastic. I have and always will recycle, but trying to consume less of the stuff is proving impossible.

I won't miss it when it goes. Am enjoying the supermarket reusable fruit & veg bags that have come in.

I got rid of so many bags a couple of months back. It's ridiculous how it builds up.

Not our fault Aldi puts everything in plastic. Needs to change at a higher level, not much we can do really.
Plastic won't go anywhere.

Giving up plastic would be a HUGE task and I can't see it going anywhere beyond certain brands targeting the Green mob.
It does piss me off though. One of the worst things our species ever created and will almost certainly be here - killing whatever is left in the boiling sea - long after we've made ourselves extinct.

It’s not something I give much of a thought to. They’ve at least made it convenient with two separate bins and I put the right things in each so I don’t get fined.
Like everything else some other material will come along that will probably pollute ten times more than plastic to make, but at least everyone will feel that inner glow as they post about using it on twitter.

Just look at every single thing you use. Think about what it was made of before it was made of plastic (if it was possible to make it at all), and think about whether that "bio-derived" product sounds like something that we should be abusing the hell of.
EDIT: Heck, plastic is probably in the top 10 of mankind's inventions.

It is, but it's also in the bottom 10. For all its uses, we can't get rid of the shit. We now have micro-plastics in our blood, in the food we eat and in the water we drink.
Love plastic.
Also don’t recycle.

For the people it causes cancer in and the babies born with defects because of it, sure.

Googled this out of curiosity.
Previous research has shown that, on average, people ingest about 5 grams of plastic every week, the equivalent of a credit card

In any case, plastic is quite excellent. However, if anyone can find an alternative that will kill less babies, I am all for it. Not expecting to see such a product any time soon though.

Never play chess with a pigeon. It will just knock over the pieces, shit on the board and strut around like it's won. As they say.
I get slight anxiety at disposing of this stuff due to the sheer needless volume of the packaging of food. The major anxiety is with glass. I used to wash and keep them all (also had a twin tower of 1kg greek yoghurt pots to the ceiling) but I joined you cretins in killing the planet after storage became difficult.
A revolution is certainly needed im cutting that shit out for food packaging though. Promising to see some attempts at least.

Anyone wanting to reduce plastic consumption should just focus in reducing consumption overall.

Knowledge about what? The link between BPA and all kinds of diseases has been studied a lot in the past few years, but nothing conclusive has emerged. Might be bad for you, might not. If it is bad, we don't know at which quantities it will be bad for you. Also BPA =/= every plastic out there, although it is one of, if not the most, common precursor to all kinds of plastic products.

Just because people are making money off it doesn't mean it's not real. You might as well claim cancer's fake because drug companies make money off cancer drugs.
Record levels of c02, epic wildfires in America, Siberia, record temperatures in the West coast of America, Canada, Turkey, rapidly melting ice sheets in the Arctic circle is actually just someone coining it in.

I think the reservation I have about the solutions is it usually involves harvesting other rare minerals. We tend to solve problems and create another one in its place.

We've bunged pretty much every nasty substance imaginable into the sea (and rivers, or the land, and the air. Space we're working on) in large quantities. That doesn't mean I should have to bin the tupperware and take my lunch to work in a hemp sack, it means we should address the systems that allowed it to get there in the first place and completely fail to penalise the people who put it there.
My Yamaha Ecodear recorder (https://usa.yamaha.com/products/musical_instruments/winds/recorders/plant-based_plastic_soprano/index.html) is made of some "plant-based plastic." Not sure what that means, but lets says it is all plant based, and biodegradable. It feels just like a plastic recorder would, so it seems like a great alternative. On the other hand, plant-based means that if we were to replace a big portion of our current plastic products with this material, we would need to devote a good chunk of our arable land to it. Land that we obviously do not have an infinite supply of. Just like with biofuels, the effect that such a move would have on food availability is worrying. Not to mention that it would also take a big chunk of our drinkable water, of which we have a surprisingly small supply.
Not saying that such a material would be necessarily worse for the environment than regular plastic, but it is not obvious that it would be better.

I remember getting a biodegradable carrier bag from a shop once. The handles felt like they were going to go at any moment. It was very stressful.
I've changed my mind. Keep normal plastic. Fuck you Turtles.

Why do you have a recorder? I thought no one actually played those outside of being forced to in school.

Presumably he hates his neighbours.
There's a different conversation rather than replacing plastic which is around reducing consumption and increasing circular economies. Plastic isn't inherently bad, we just create too many products with a design to fail quickly and be replaced.

My wife has been on a mission this year to reduce our single use plastic consumption and use of chemicals. I don't really share the same enthusiasm and it's certainly hitting my pocket more, but she enjoys it.

I will have you know that I own not one, but two recorders. A soprano and an alto. They are simple, fun instruments to play. With that said, whenever I feel like playing I tend to go for the pennywhistle instead of the recorders. I also own a melodica, four guitars, and a piano. Out of all those instruments, I cannot properly play any of them.
