View Full Version : July: The end of the Euros and.... friendlies?
Baz has rightly reminded me how calendars so it's time for a new thread, which I suppose gives us one more chance to con some mugs into saying they thinking it's COMING HOME in a poll before England go out to the Danes on penalties, eh?
And after that the miserable, barren wasteland of pre-season and the RL arguing with people in the transfer thread.
And because I haven't posted it even once yet:

July 21 shall forever be remembered as the month Liverpool signed Mbappe.
Presumably a very sad Mbappe if he's had to end up choosing Liverpool over somewhere nice.
I suppose the squillions of quid would make up for it.

Let's be honest, England's probably joint third-favourites with the Danes. Italy look great, almost unstoppable. Spain winning would involve some chaos in both boxes. It's tight, though. Every team has something about them. I genuinely see these Italians as a fantastic tournament side.
Not sure the Danes have a semo upset in them so it's up to the big boys to bring the joy in the final.
Are there any big screen places in London for the final?
Fancy going up to London for the day but would prefer a plan.

:cab:
Apart from being played off the pitch by Austria.
Losing their leftback also potentially bad for them.
England with the easier semi and home advantage are the clear favourites (by dint of being less likely to be eliminated in the semis than either Italy or Spain). Doesn't mean they're going to win it, but let's be realistic.
Italy v England would be a good final. England's all out defence against Italy's high octane attacking. Welcome to backwardsland.

Perhaps, relative to what was expected.
Couple of super marginal offsides bailed them out. Not really bothered by how many shots they had. Austria had 16 which seems like a lot as well.
England had 10 shots last night. 6 on target. Same number as Italy managed from their 27.

There should be a ten question quiz at the door to let people in. 6/10 qualifies for entry. 8/10 if you want a more intimate night among connoisseurs.
Q1. Who or what is a 'merking'?
Q2. Former Leyton Orient manager John Sitton once encouraged one of his players to bring his fucking what?
Q3. Which of these is a former Swansea footballer? a. Paul Dawdle b. Lee Trundle c. Craig Saunter
Q4. Premier League referee Bobby Madley lost his job after allegedly fellating what animal?
etc.

I'm nervous about tomorrow night, which I haven't been even remotely for England's previous games. None of the sides England have faced so far have a) been any good b) had momentum c) radiated good vibes, and Denmark tick all of those boxes.

This is a more apposite time to do so, although I'm not sold on the pessimism.
I've also come to the realisation in the last day or so that whilst hurt probably isn't the right term, I've had 30 (well 31) years of disappointment watching England, since the 1990 World Cup, which matches up well with, and was probably the real intention behind that particular lyric. So yeah, it's definitely on the cards.

What I've been saying up until now has been the apparently controversial take that England would win something eventually, not that England were likely to win x or y match/tournament.
They are correctly favourites to win this summer but it's still only about a 4 in 10 chance and I suspect I'm partly anxious about the awful takes that will result if something goes tits up.

They all seem to suffer from a lack of composure when they get close to goal. Olmo has been the worst for it, but it applies to Oyarzabal as well. Even Pedri's passing seems to get worse up front.

I think Italy are slightly easier for England tbh.
Spain would just keep the ball and fuck you over, as long as they managed to score in 90 minutes.
Italy wont be easier (for Denmark) but I think they're easier to beat than Spain personally.

You would've put money on Morata missing. Italy should win this tournament but they've made it hard for themselves. Sitting back on a lead and banking on the counter just hasn't quite worked out.
If I was a manager I’d tell my squad to hit penalties as hard as they can. Thunderbolts only. Any objectors will be dropped.

I think England would prefer to face Italy in the final of the two.
I don't think they'd cope well with Spains 75% possession. Italy are the masters at it and if Oyarzebal wasn't a bottle merchant they'd be out and quite comfortably so.
Fatty neckbeard is easily saving two Spanish penalties so they need to win it here.

The bit I don't quite get (and I've seen multiple examples of this on twitter this morning from our Italian amici) is that they are all convinced we think we've got it won and just think we have to turn up to win. That is literally the opposite of what we think. If anything, we're far too defeatist about our chances. That is also exactly what the song is about, from start to finish.
In turn that leads me to think they just want to dislike England anyway, and use that as a bogus excuse to do so.
Waffdon

All I hear out the window when drunks are walking home is people singing Three Lions.
The public are fully in.
Jimmy Floyd
07-07-2021, 11:29 AM
The other 23 teams in the tournament famously don't ever sing songs about their team.
If you're going to continue to judge groups of people by their gobbiest Twitter representatives then you're going to continue to find them obnoxious. The ones who don't like the English are probably doing the exact same thing.
Alternatively you're just doing the same thing and using a thin excuse to cover the fact that you just don't like them very much. See: Scotland fans and "the English media."
England fans need to learn to be more contrite and not enjoy any victories.

Well, they mostly don't. They sing Three Lions, which, as you say is a widely misunderstood ditty.

That was 'Jews remains still steaming'.
The 'jewels remain still gleaming' is one a kid in my English class sang while we were waiting for England vs. Tunisia to start at France '98. He was really, really convinced those were the words (even though they make zero sense) so I had to explain to him who Jules Rimet was.

The odder lyrical quirk of that carol is that the rest of the verses are the tale of a group of people DEMANDING figgy pudding in increasingly desperate terms, I suppose aptly anticipating the silly pricks who would take the ditty door-to-door in the decades to come.
