I assume it's because there will need to be too many vehicles/crew on the track to repair the barrier, they really don't like doing that these days.

Nothing wrong with the way the red flag was called. It happens like that all the time. Imola and Baku were exactly the same. In fact, Lewis benefitted greatly from the red flag in Imola, so it feels like the balance has been restored.

I think the speed is very deceptive as well, Verstappen could have been doing anything and there's an extent to which you can't just pull over at racing speed. It sounds as if they were in the process of telling Mercedes/Hamilton while he was slowing to give the place back.
Shindig
05-12-2021, 08:00 PM
From how it's described (bloody radio), Red Bull were trying to give it back in a Spa 2008 fashion. So they could nail Hamilton into turn 1. They repeated the trick one more time before the penalty hit.
And Max summoned to the stewards. This is literally mental. I’d give anything to be in the paddock right now.

But what can they do? A time penalty is nothing unless it's about 20 seconds worth. A grid drop for the next race? I'd say maybe no further action, but they only summoned him that I can see so they've decided he's 100% at fault.

No way Mateschitz will allow them to sully the sugary drink's reputation by trying anything blatant next week, though Max is probably desperate to do so if his recent conduct is anything to go by. He also goes for the Trumpian approach of just lying about every incident afterwards when it's clear he knows exactly what he's doing.
They do have three rear gunners who they could use as torpedos / kamikaze pilots, or to re-run Crashgate. I wouldn't rule out that sort of thing.
In the broader sense, I do think the stewarding/penalties have got completely out of control this season, largely because of Horner and his sporting director mate being desperate cunts, and almost entirely as a result of all the run-off and lack of natural penalty for going off track.

I don't think Franz Tost is going along with his drivers getting involved to that extent and Red Bull won't want to get thrown out of the constructors (although it would be amusing given their whinging about repair costs etc after Silverstone and Hungary). So it's up to Max to believably run him off the road which he has shown he is quite happy and able to do. I was thinking of all the 1995 parallels after they hit each other at both Silverstone and Monza, just as Hill and Schumacher did that year. Bottas is very Coulthard, and Perez sort of scans as a more corporate Johnny Herbert. Leclerc and Sainz are quite Berger and Alesi, and McLaren are VERY mid 90s McLaren but without a scheming Ron Dennis trying to, and ultimately succeeding in, destabilising the rest of the field.
It even had a comical comeback for a 40 something ex WDC, albeit Alonso managed to fit in his car, which was a disappointment.
Both years also featured Martin Brundle being sidelined by a highly corporate entity starting with M (Mugen Honda and Megan Thee Stallion, respectively).

It's great analysis. It shows very clear Max has that "I win or we both crash" mentality in him. Lewis has learned since Silverstone that Max will simply not back out and give the corner at any point.
Monza we saw a flash of it too. Max was never making the chicane where he was taken by Lewis and chose to take them both out rather than give the corner up. His reaction of seeing his car on another mans head was "That's what you get." The boy spends too much time around Marko and Horner.

I feel like Max was genuinely pissed off from the pit stop as well. The annoying thing is, if Lewis' stop wasn't slow, he would've been even further clear by the chicane. Man, Sunday's going to be something. Even if Max has a scruffy qualifying, he's probably the best at launching off the grid.

The difference between the two for me is that Hamilton tends to stay on track, once he thinks he has the corner he'll absolutely push right to the edge, he's done it throughout his F1 career. Verstappen takes it a step further and regularly just misses the braking point intentionally and runs off the track to take/keep a position.
Max has been raised by Jos who is not a very nice person. It's been effective but I think he needs to do a Hamilton and bin his dad for a bit in order to re-establish the relationship on an equal footing, Jos seems to act like Max is still 12.

I think that analysis is right, but what it misses is that Verstappen's chuck it up the inside theory can also work without running people off the track [see the second restart last week]. I think a lot of his early days flat out dangerous double moving etc is probably being held against him [perhaps not unfairly, he is quite dangerous].
I was also coming round to your thinking on the over praise he was getting for his qualy lap [in the end keeping it between the kines is a skill] but I do think it shows he probably is the best in terms of pure pace. Whilst I want Hamilton to win, Verstappen winning might be better for the sport as not winning will break him and Red Bull will probably be absolutely useless again next year once all the new regs come in and Mercedes can money/outsmart everyone to death.

On the face it the FP3 times look rather good for Mercedes but sand not exactly hard to come by this weekend. I still expect Red Bull to go aggressive in qualifying to try and get track position either by starting ahead or using the soft for a pace advantage early on. Although if these times are reliable it may not matter, especially given the race is a couple of hours later in the day.

I never bother with FP1, but in FP2, Mercedes had 0.6/7 seconds in hand. In FP3 it was closer, but Max and Lewis kept aborting flying laps on the soft as the tyres were burning up midway through the lap.
The key here is FP2 was an evening session, as Qualy and the race will be. A massive heat difference. Cooler running and harder tyres has suited the Mercedes all year long so you'd suggest they're on top as it is. I reckon there's been a fair amount of sandbagging too.
Button thinks Red Bulls FP2 programme means they're locked in to starting on softs for both guys. Also interesting to note that they've gone for their skinniest rear wing, while Mercedes don't seem to have.

They're going to need track position I think. I can't imagine a scenario where Max is able to reel Lewis in from behind, unless there's some massive tyre or strategic difference that you really wouldn't expect at this godforsaken venue.

What's the crack with the tyres then? Offset strategies sounds like it could be fun. Red, yellow, yellow for Verstappen and then either yellow, white or yellow, yellow, red for Hamilton? How long are the softs likely to hang on from the start? Will there be time to build a buffer to the field or is Verstappen likely to be pitting into the midfield clusterfuck? Definitely feel the denouement could be one of them chasing the other down on much better tyres.

If it's a 2 stop race for both, you've got it right. Though Max does not have a new set of mediums. Lewis has 1, so he is still on the optimum strategy.
It is possibly a 1 stop, which would go Medium to Hard, but that one is probably out of the window for Max now. I'm not sure those softs would last long enough.
It all depends on tyre deg. If it's high and pushes to a 2 stop, you'd think Hamilton will bye his time for later in the race.

I've got quite into the first corner game theory. In all the scenarios I can imagine (short of protagonists being really slow off the line), the most chaotic outcomes come from Perez getting off to a flier from behind, crossing over to the right and making a super-aggressive sweep into 1. I expect Max to do the same from ahead, but Perez doing it could be carnage.
I don't know what I'd do as Hamilton. You can't be too cautious or you could end up in 7th or something.

Last year, RB pitted Max on lap 11 from mediums to hards, and he ran them to the end of the race. With the course changes, this might not be viable, but that's a mega stint on one set to the end of the race, so he might try to make it work this time around.

Assuming we get away from Turn/Lap 1/2, I think we're on for a repeat of Austin, with Lewis having to close and pass in the final laps to win it.
Qualy was a bit of a re-do from Max. This is what it would have looked like last week had he not binned it. FP2 and Q2/3 suggest the Mercedes is not so happy on the softs here, but does seem to have the advantage on the yellow tyres.
If I had to pick, I'd lean Max right now. Track position with the way he's been defending lately would make him a mighty tough guy to pass. I just hope whoever wins, it's through skill on track. None of those season long gremlins(Red Bulls rear wing, Mercs engine) popping up to deny someone.
I don't think Lewis will retire if he wins or not. Those 2022 cars will be a lot of fun if they work as intended. And that's the stage he's approaching now. He already has all of the records bar the outright titles. I think he's giving himself the year to see if they work and if Mercedes nail the new regs yet again. He may yet even extend into his 40's.
Since the woman left, he's kept to himself seemingly, so there's no family for him to be leaving the sport for.

As for the race, if you look at the speed trap results for qualy the Red Bull was awfully fast in a straight line. They put a very skinny rear wing on for Verstappen which would help him defend but could also put extra wear on the rears. My guess is they'll both try for a one stop but Hamilton will extend his first stint to try and have a grip advantage on the hards later in the race but he's probably going to have to make the pass on track.

His medium tyre (often the better one to start on so that you only need to stop once in the race) was botched during qualifying, so he only has used ones of those and new softs (quicker, but faster degrading). His team wanted him on the other tyre, but he ruined his last new set of them with a lock up. So they switched him. Those red soft tyres should degrade quite quickly, forcing Max into 2 stops, or a 1 stop with bad tyres at the end of the race.
If they do not degrade as expected by Mercedes, then it's going to be tough for Lewis to reel him in later on.

They have to start on the same set of tyres that they used in the second part of qualifying, Verstappen initially set a time on a set of mediums but then had a lock up and potentially ruined that set so he went back out and set a time on the softs. Debatable if this was by accident or design as the RB tends to prefer the softer compound compared to the Mercedes.
On Max himself, he is incredibly uncompromising in his driving style, he is also quite combative out of the car too which both attracts and repels fans in equal measure.
