It's pretty striking how run down and shit a lot of the country was when you watch stuff set, news footage etc. even into the nineties.

Already has. Anything from the early 00's looks ancient to me. It'll continue to feel that way unless some AI bots decide to upscale 9/11 to 1080p.

00s will eventually look worse than the 90s because of the swap from film to digital. You can’t upscale it so you’re stuck with 720p dirge for the rest of time.

Sadly so. The Alex Hunter thing was good, but I think I'm right in that it's now gone back to just the dull career mode if you want to do anything other than the Untimate Team shite?
Sir Andy Mahowry
29-12-2021, 06:02 PM
The Alex Hunter thing was shit, the story was far too boring.
The main modes are career (I think it's just a reskin every year, with no changes), Ultimate Team and VOLTA (street 3v3 football thing for the kids).

"Go on Alex. 'cor blimey, you can football." Goal had a more impressive plot and that starred a 45 year old Anna Friel trying to play a teenager.

A very, very weak soccer game at that.

I have FIFA this year for the first time in over a decade. It's a good game in terms of the actual football. The Ultimate Team stuff is incomprehensible garbage, probably aimed at exploiting children as far as I can see. As an average to poor player I enjoy the career mode playing on 'professional' AI, gives me the sometimes-win-sometimes-lose challenge that makes it fun.

When I say it was good, you have to read "good" with the understanding that I bought it every year for about 4 years and must have played each version for about 10 hours over the year.
The Alex Hunter Stuff had me playing every evening for a couple of weeks, then I got bored again. I miss my childhood ability of being able to play "Road to the World Cup" for a solid year without tiring of it.

Fuck Fifa and Fuck EA Sports
I won't go into it again as I vented my spleen enough in the relevant thread but I thought the most recent version of FIFA I played was a really quite poor football game. Even taking aside all the horseshit they've draped around it which is now basically the game and it's all built for gambling addicts.

I went back to PES today and bumped it up to Superstar. The thing that kind of takes the wind out of my sails is how Top Player now feels a touch too easy. Superstar still feels like a fuck you. Losing games on the counter whilst you've not got enough space to put chances away. In the absence of a proper new one, this will have to do.
igor_balis
29-12-2021, 08:10 PM
I got quite into ultimate team for a few years there, but a couple of years away is enough to look back and think what the fuck was I thinking. I remember my IRL mate telling me in detail how easy it was to make money if you just spent about 5 hours a day on the web app tracking players like a stockbroker and I thought I might have to get him sectioned.
If I had a child and I caught them watching FUT pack opening videos I'd put them up for adoption.
Agree with the view that Fifa is a bit shit these days, but I think this is more to-do with us getting old rather than the game itself.
I'm more than happy to admit when I realise I'm just being a grumpy old shite, which is often, but in the case of FIFA I think I'm actually right.
People buy it because there is literally no competition and they want a football game.
Shindig
29-12-2021, 08:51 PM

Apropos of Meatloaf dying, I was looking up how long his I Would Do Anything for Love song was number 1 for (7 weeks, I thought longer) and it led me to 1993 being somewhat of a 'banger' of a year for music. No Limit, All That She Wants, Mr Vain, What Is Love, Informer, Boom Shake The Room, Whitney, Suede, In Utero, Automatic for the People, East 17 [we'll gloss over all the Take That wank], Chaka Demus & Pliers, probably just a function of age but good stuff.

I've checked and it's not all misty-eyed nostalgia, as, by comparison, 1994 was an absolute wasteland. Almost half a year of Wet Wet Wet at number 1 amongst other trash.
I suppose you have your Rhythm of the Night, D-Ream and Stiltskin [cracking riff in that, or whatever, did it feature heavily for Sky in some way or other] and I believe Definitely Maybe came in '94 so it wasn't all bad.

Music got worse with each passing year of the 90s. Probably went the other way for a while in the 2000s. No idea since then.
To be fair to the rest of the 90s, 'Turtle Power' by Partners in Kryme coming out in 1990 gave the rest of the decade an impossible act to follow.

Honestly after the way I treated my body in the second half of my twenties, if someone offered me a heart attack at 52 I'd at least consider it. Make it 60 like maradonna and I'd probably sign the contract right now.

Seems with heart attacks where you have them is mega critical. A doctor friend once hit me with a frankly alarming stat about how unlikely you were to survive one outside of a hospital environment, but on your own in a hotel room is probably a worst case scenario.
Was he still having it away with Liz Hurley? Steve Bing, Shane Warne, look out Hugh, I guess.

Someone had a heart attack in the block next to me at Sunderland last Tuesday. They were working on him in the stands for about half an hour but unfortunately he died a couple of days ago.
Seems everyone goes to the football to have a heart attack these days.

Shane Warne dying is a big one: not many cricketers are more iconic to me than him. Maybe only Brian Lara being the bigger name when I was growing up.

I think you've fallen into the very common trap of conflating a cardiac arrest with a heart attack (myocardial infarction).
Cardiac arrest means your heart stops and there are a variety of things which can cause that to happen.
A heart attack is where one of the arteries which supplies blood to your heart muscle essentially clogs up and some of the heart muscle stops receiving blood (and therefore oxygen). Heart attacks vary in severity depending on a number of things including which artery blocks. Heart attacks can cause cardiac arrest. It is one of the top causes of cardiac arrest in fact, but despite that most heart attacks don't lead to cardiac arrest.
Your chances of surviving a cardiac arrest outside of hospital are about 9%. Even in-hospital it's only about 25-30%.
Cardiac arrest is what you would do chest compressions/CPR and shocks for.

Looking up the type he had is grim reading.
The most common length of survival following diagnosis is 10 to 13 months, with fewer than 1 to 3% of people surviving longer than five years.[2][5] In the United States between 2012 and 2016 five-year survival was 6.8%.[5] Without treatment, survival is typically 3 months
