View Full Version : Dominic Calvert-Lewin is gay
This is a fact that DCL himself doesn’t shy away from, often attending events with his partner, yet hasn’t felt the need to formally announce it to the world - because why should he?
I know we’ve see names idly thrown around, such as Kyle Walker-Peters and James Maddison (https://www.instagram.com/p/CDlPBzBFiq9/?igshid=138sl2wa1mje3) but there’s nothing substantial in it, and we’ve touched on the subject before but I figured a thread might be more productive.
I’d be interested to hear the thoughts of our homosexual member(s) of The Third Half, and their opinions on whether people feel football needs someone to be the spearhead in tackling homophobia (https://youtu.be/Qy1IP6Idbr8) within football, and could (there’s no should about it) Dominic Calvert Lewin be the man to get things recognised on another level.
2020 saw a massive impact to the beautiful game from a lot of things, least of all covid, including Black Lives Matter. Has this helped from an anti-racism perspective at all? It’s not for me to say, but people sure seem more aware of the cause and I’m yet to encounter anyone who has a problem with the kneeling before a game. :sorry:
And I know Hitzlsperger came out when he retired but, realistically, have only 10 gay men (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality_in_association_football) ever played professional football? I really don’t think so. The stigma is still very real in this male dominated world, and it absolutely needs to be addressed.

This is not the first footballer you have randomly declared to be gay, is it?
This is against the media/trendy tide but I don't think it would make a huge amount of difference for there to be a (single) high profile out player and for the player themselves it might even make things worse, as they would become a lightning rod for all the unpleasantness that exists. Football is a game of aggression based around angry men shouting things at each other and that isn't an environment I would want to be a social trailblazer in - it ends badly for most.

Jimmy Floyd

If his James Maddison 'link' is anything to go by then Baz's standards for declaring someone to be gay seem to be 'stand near another man and wear fancy clothes'

Neymar is definitely gay then.
Regardless, I've thought for a little while now that 'coming out' should only really be a thing if you've actively lived a straight lifestyle (i.e. had girlfriends). I would hope we're mostly past giving a shit about which gender people shag by now. I appreciate that we're not in many areas, but they'll catch up eventually.

Pretty sure it’s made up unless his actual girlfriend is a man.
Is this known, or has he just come out publicly, or has Baz just made it up for something to go on Twitter? Its not made up but it’s also not “publicly known,” for lack of a better term. I explained this in the opening line. That’s by-the-bye though, I could just have easily called this thread “Gay Footballers” but I wanted to specifically ask about people’s thoughts on the need for someone to get the ball rolling in terms of tackling homophobia in ‘a game of aggression based around angry men shouting things at each other.’ (Which is, sadly, bang on - especially when it comes to [a lot of] fans.)
And the Madders pic was simply a photo of the two previous suggestions together. Honestly there’s no substance in that though, I probably shouldn’t have even included it.

I think it would be the other end and all organisational. The fans wouldn't care (or would at least be shamed into silence), but Big Football would be all over 'The Gay Footballer', and everything they did would be framed with reference to it. Is he in the kit launch material? Why should he be? Why are the club homophobic? Picked for England. Wahey, first openly gay interna... Why haven't you picked the one openly gay... You would become one of the most famous athletes in the world overnight, and how many of them really want that?

Put another way, there have been a few rugby gays, and beyond the initial coverage it never gets mentioned. Nike and the Guardian wouldn't let that happen.
Put another way, there have been a few rugby gays, and beyond the initial coverage it never gets mentioned. Nike and the Guardian wouldn't let that happen.Definitely.
On Football Manager (I know) if a player comes out as gay, you get one piece of news about it and then no mention of it ever again. As far as I know there’s no “field” in the players attributes assigned to ‘is gay YES/no’ and it’s literally an unimportant ‘oh by the way this happened,’ almost purely for the sake of inclusion. Whereas in reality it would probably be mentioned completely out of context by Jonathan Pearce at every opportunity, for the sake of, well, I don’t even know.

Yeah, so it would probably be both ends, and who wants that. You probably underestimate how many dinosaurs in crowds / in the street / online do care and will pepper them with abuse.
If one isn't already 'open' about their sexuality (and who ever says that of straight people) then it is presumably because one does not want the hassle.
Lewis
25-12-2020, 01:24 PM
You're not going to get genuine mass crowd abuse relating to it, and for every individual saying anything on social media you would have a thousand white knights and the club condemning them like when some Arab takes aim at the rainbow laces. If - say - Luke Shaw came out, the abuse he gets would still mostly be about being fat and/or shit.

25-12-2020, 01:27 PM

Lewis
25-12-2020, 02:02 PM
I don't accept that I underestimate it. What little racist abuse still remains in football is almost entirely faceless online abuse, and in a world where this (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51561987) is happening I don't see how gay footballers would be uniquely subject and/or vulnerable to personal abuse.
