It is officially December, mates, so that means the annual Christmas thread. For previous efforts see:

Christmas 2015 (https://www.thethirdhalf.co.uk/showthread.php?446-Christmas-2015) (Christmas of Chaos)
Christmas 2016 (https://www.thethirdhalf.co.uk/showthread.php?1357-Christmas-2016) (Make Christmas Great Again)
Christmas 2017 (https://www.thethirdhalf.co.uk/showthread.php?1953-Christmas-2017) (Christmas means Christmas)
Christmas 2018 (https://www.thethirdhalf.co.uk/showthread.php?2334-Christmas-2018) (#PeoplesChristmas)
Christmas 2019 (https://www.thethirdhalf.co.uk/showthread.php?2567-Christmas-2019) (Get Christmas Done)

Having successfully got Christmas done last year, there can only be one thing dominating our thoughts this time round. Not the chinfluenza, but another hoax - the massive voter fraud on the other side of the pond. 2020 is therefore the year of the Stolen Christmas.

I have a Milkybar advent calendar.

Surely, in the spirit of Biden-Harris, this should have been 'Build Back Christmas'.

Normally my aunt comes from Birmingham but she is officially SCARED to the point where she won't leave her house and has even said she doesn't want to give/receive cards or presents. Secretly I like this as it means I'll be able to swear, talk about things other than the music of Johann Strauss, and don't have to buy her jam.

It's going to be a fairly shit one. Things are opening back up here today meaning I'm most likely not going to get to go home for Christmas Day because this is at least two weeks too early.

Virtual christmas and a Reese's Pieces advent calendar for me. Having worked the last few years I had guaranteed myself the whole two weeks of festivities off, and I'm still taking it coronavirus be damned.

I have heard some insane rumour Bojo is going to chuck another bank holiday in the week after Christmas, not the standard 'a bank holiday has fallen on the weekend so the next monday is a bank holiday' rule but one additional to that. Sounds like horseshit, didn't the government claim bank holidays cost the economy too much when Labour wanted to bring in more?

It's going to be a fairly shit one.

We'll be at home, not seeing the (heavily pregnant) sister in law and I don't have to drive so I can actually drink. This is going to be a Tier 1 Christmas.

Ian
01-12-2020, 09:29 AM
The lockdown restrictions mean I'm going to have to see less of my sister's in-laws, AND I'm not on-call this year so I can drink (more.) It's a thumbs up from me at this stage.

We haven't decided yet, but I'm fairly certain it's going to be video calls etc. We have a tradition of going to the main cemetery here in Vienna on the morning of the 24th to visit family graves and share anecdotes from the time when the people buried there were still alive - so maybe we'll do that and then go our separate ways.

I'm going to have a christmas tree in my flat for the first time since I've moved out of my parents' place eight years ago. Proper adult stuff.

Spikey M

Or the classic: "Dad, didn't grandpa grow up in a majority Jewish neighbourhood? Did he ever talk to you about what happened there after 1938?"

"Nah, he didn't want to talk about that."

Awkward silence

I'm going out to get a Xmas tree today. We're just staying in Amsterdam this year, not seeing anyone, but I'm guessing there'll be some video chat involved. Need to get stocked for Xmas booze and food.

We've really, really fucked up Round 2. Even now they still haven't put in any firm measures to stop the spread. Jersey politics back to normal and the health minister is a mess too. Contradicts himself non-stop.

Nothing drains my soul quite like feeling forced to shop. I walk for 3 hours at pace with the right music and nature before any sign of fatigure yet 30 minutes mincing about a shopping centre (or clicking through amazon) leaves me destroyed both physically and mentally. It's not aided by the fact I haven't been excited by a material good since ISS Pro 98 so I don't even believe in the positive power of a succesful gift.

The great thing about having an organised wife is she starts Christmas shopping in January as she comes across bargains. Then they just get chucked in the loft bit by bit throughout the year. A necklace, 3 pairs of earrings and a free bangle.

Order came today and clearly whoever packed it didn't realise it said "3" under the earrings and as such only sent 1 pair out...

In my last job (Korea) you literally weren't allowed to take the Christmas days off - you had to come in - and here, I am forced to take it as three of my annual 20 days, so in reality I have 17. Having the choice sounds like some weird fantasy. This year, I wouldn't mind working them to be honest.

My missus has this. She has to take the days off the 25th to 31st mandatory so it takes her yearly allowance to 20 (or maybe the same as you).

I would love to have taken some more days off now but basically we're short staffed so I'm going to work through then take weeks off in Jan, Feb and March.

Depends what your work load is like. I am off until 4th January now and need it, worked 9 days in a row averaging 12 hours a day to get everything covered to ensure my slate was clear when I put my OOO on. If I hadn't had the next two weeks as leave I'd be scrambling to get as much work done as possible to get ahead for January.
