Three days of national mourning? We'd better get this when Terry Butcher carks it.

Well, whose death would actually send your country into mourning? Thread open to cities as well, like Dalglish or Gerrard for Liverpool.

Nobody other than senior royalty.

Princess Diana. I didn't understand why then and I still don't understand why now, but it broke the country in a way that I don't think it could be broken today.

Probably happened discretely when Saville popped it over here.

If anybody fancies a good documentary, this is brilliant.

As for sport, Alex 'Sir Alex Ferguson' Ferguson is still the biggest figure in British sport by an absolute mile. When he goes it will be wall-to-wall coverage like nothing you've seen outside of serious historical figures snuffing it.

Bale now I'd imagine.

Strange one that because when ever he trends on Twitter, I almost always think "oh shit". I sense you're right though.

Yeah, when he had his turn a while back every club in the world was tweeting positive vibes. He should take one for the team and croak during extra time of any future Scottish referendum.

Actors and singers probably one of the Hemsworths or Kylie Minogue.

Agreed. I can't see anyone having that kind of public outpour.

Fucking look at the state of your societies, mourning athletes and skets who married well.

At 81, ours will go any day now and I'll probs take a week bereavement leave off work.

Sir Alex and David Beckham are the big two in this country. I guess if Lewis Hamilton died in a race a la Senna it would be stop the news for a month sort of thing, but if he got cancer then not so much.

Baz
25-11-2020, 11:40 PM
Nah nobody cares about Hamilton if you're not into F1. I forgot he existed until reading his name.

Like nobody cares about Oisin Murphy outside of racing fans.

Jimmy Floyd

The actual truth is that no one whose career has been on Sky is a properly big figure, and that even includes all the footballers since 1992. The only exceptions are those who (via England games on terrestrial) made crossover into household names and even then you're looking at Beckham, Rooney and very few others. Using the 'my mum' test, she wouldn't have a clue who Steven Gerrard was, and maybe not even Frank Lampard.

Lewis

And most people who know David Beckham think he was some average set piece merchant over-hyped for his haircuts and wife.

Wayne Gretzky snuffing it would probably be the one for Canada.

On balance it would be Totti for Italy, especially because of the Rome effect.

No idea. I don't know if you saw it, but skipping to 12:10 provides one of the main highlights. There's gold throughout once you get past the boring intro.

The US doesn't have one, I'm pretty sure; Kobe might be as close as you get. Any political figure is hated by half the country, then in sports you get the weird situation where we dominate the sports we invented, to the point that nobody could be a 'national hero' because there's not enough global competition, and we're shit at ones we didn't invent.

Sometimes it takes me aback when I see things from mainstream US golf coverage and get reminded just how big Tiger Woods is. He is at least ten times bigger than golf itself, over there at least, and golf isn't small. Not sure if he qualifies for true national icon status but he and MJ must be close.
